How to type Nepali half letters – consonant plus halant plus consonant on a keyboard

You know how to type क, स and त. But the moment a word needs स्त, क्ष or प्र, the letters refuse to join — you get सत, a stray ् mark, or a box. Half letters (आधा अक्षर) are the single biggest stumbling block for anyone learning Nepali typing.

The good news: every half letter follows one rule. Once you know where the halant (हलन्त, ्) key is on your keyboard, you can type any conjunct in the language — not just the ones you have memorised. This guide shows the rule, then the exact keys for Romanized Unicode, Traditional Unicode, Preeti and mobile keyboards.

Quick answer: A half letter is a consonant + halant (्). Type the first consonant, press the halant key, then type the next consonant: स + ् + त = स्त.

  • Nepali Romanized (Unicode) layout: halant is the / key → s / t = स्त
  • Phonetic tools (Google Input Tools, online converters): just type the sound → mitra = मित्र
  • Preeti: hold Shift + the consonant key for its half form → Shift+; = स्, then t = स्त
  • Mobile: tap the ् key between the two consonants

What Is a Half Letter in Nepali?

Every Nepali consonant carries a built-in “a” sound. क is not just “k” — it is “ka”. When two consonants need to sit together with no vowel between them (like “st” in namaste), the first one has to drop that “a”. The mark that does this is the halant (हलन्त, also called hal or virama): ्.

A consonant with a halant is called a dead consonant (मृत व्यञ्जन) or half letter. Depending on the letters involved, it shows up on screen in one of three ways:

How it looksWhat happensExamples
Half formThe first letter loses its vertical stroke and attaches to the nextस्त, न्त, ग्य, प्य, क्त
Special or stacked shapeThe two letters merge into a new shape or stack verticallyक्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, द्ध, ट्ट, द्य
Visible halantNothing follows, so the ् mark is shown under the letterभगवान्, विद्वान्, जगत्

Behind all three is exactly the same typing sequence. Your font decides the shape — you only decide the order of letters.

The One Rule: Consonant + ् + Consonant

स
consonant (sa)
+
्
halant
+
त
consonant (ta)
=
स्त
half letter + full letter

The same three-step sequence builds every Nepali conjunct: क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, प्र, र्क and more.

In Unicode (the text used on Facebook, Viber, Google Docs, websites and modern Word files), every conjunct is stored as first consonant → halant → second consonant. Even the “special” letters are not separate keys under the hood:

ConjunctTyped as (Unicode order)Example word

Notice the two र forms. When र comes first (र्क), it becomes the little hook on top called reph. When र comes second (प्र), it becomes the slanted stroke below. Same keys, different order — that is why धर्म and ध्रम look so different.

If you understand this table, you already understand Nepali half letters. The rest is just finding the halant key on the keyboard you use.

Which Method Should You Use?

Phonetic tools
Chatting, social media, quick posts
Halant: none — type the sound
Romanized layout
Long Unicode documents, blogs, office work
Halant: / key
Traditional / Inscript
Typists trained on the typewriter layout
Halant: or D

Halant: Shift + consonant

Method 1: Romanized Unicode (Easiest for Most People)

Phonetic typing tools

Google Input Tools, Gboard’s transliteration mode and most online “English to Nepali” converters work by sound. You never press a halant — you simply leave out the vowel:

  • namaste → नमस्ते
  • mitra → मित्र
  • shiksha → शिक्षा
  • gyaan → ज्ञान
  • dharma → धर्म

When the tool guesses wrong (for example सत instead of स्त), don’t fight it — pick the right word from the suggestion list, or type the word again a little differently (dhanyabaad vs dhanyawaad). Phonetic tools are fast for chatting but less predictable for official documents.

Nepali Romanized keyboard layout

The Nepali Romanized layout (popularised by Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya and used by many Nepali Unicode setups) maps each Nepali letter to a fixed English key — k = क, s = स, t = त and so on. Here the halant is on the forward slash key /.

  • k / t → क्त
  • s / t → स्त
  • n / t → न्त
  • p / r → प्र
  • j g t / → जगत् (halant at the end of a word)

Because the keys never change, this layout is far more reliable than guess-based phonetic tools once you are typing long documents.

Method 2: Nepali Traditional Unicode or Inscript Layout

If you installed the Nepali keyboard that follows the old typewriter arrangement (Nepali Traditional) or an Inscript-style Devanagari layout, the letters are in fixed positions that don’t match English sounds. The rule is still the same — consonant, halant, consonant — you only need to know where your layout keeps the ् key:

  • Inscript layouts: the halant is on the D key.
  • Nepali Traditional (typewriter-style) Unicode: it is usually on the backslash key, and many Shift+key positions give ready-made half letters, similar to Preeti.

Not sure which layout you have? Switch to Nepali, press Windows + R, type osk and press Enter. The Windows On-Screen Keyboard shows the Nepali character on every key — find ्, then hold Shift to see which half letters sit on the upper layer. New to setting up a Nepali keyboard? Follow our guide on how to type Nepali in laptop first.

Method 3: Typing Half Letters in Preeti

Preeti is still the font of choice for Lok Sewa typing tests, many government offices and print shops. Preeti is not Unicode — each key simply draws a shape — so instead of a halant rule, it gives most half letters their own key: hold Shift and press the consonant.

्र (ra below)| (Shift + )प्र = k|
र् (reph above){ (Shift + [)कार्य = sfo{
् (visible halant)for letters with no half form, and word endings

Two Preeti habits that trip everyone up

  1. Use Shift, not backslash, to join letters. Pressing in Preeti draws a visible ् mark; it does not glue the letters together the way Unicode does. Use the Shift half-letter keys for joined forms, and keep for letters that have no half form (like द्, ट्, ड्) or for word endings such as भगवान्.
  2. Type in visual order. Preeti types what you see, left to right. The ि matra appears before the whole conjunct, so स्थिति starts with l. Reph (र्) appears on top of the next letter, so it is typed after that letter: कार्य = sfo{. In Unicode it’s the opposite — you always type in sound order.

Typing in Preeti but need to post the text online? Preeti text shows as gibberish anywhere the font isn’t installed. Paste it into a Preeti to Unicode converter and every half letter and conjunct is converted to proper Unicode.

How to Type Half Letters on Mobile

  • Nepali (Devanagari) keyboards such as Gboard’s Nepali layout or Hamro Nepali Keyboard have a ् key. Depending on the keyboard it sits on the main layer, on the second/symbols page, or under a long-press. Tap consonant → ् → consonant.
  • Transliteration mode (type English, get Nepali) works like the phonetic tools above — type mitra, tap मित्र in the suggestions.

Forcing a Visible Halant or a Standalone Half Letter

Sometimes you need the opposite of joining — for example showing क्‌त with the halant visible in a grammar lesson, or a lone half letter like क्‍ for a typing chart. Unicode has two invisible characters for this:

CharacterCodeEffectExample
Zero Width Non-Joiner (ZWNJ)U+200CStops the join — shows the halant markक्‌त instead of क्त
Zero Width Joiner (ZWJ)U+200DShows the half form even with nothing after itक्‍ instead of क्

In Microsoft Word: after the halant, type 200C (or 200D) and press Alt + X. Word turns the code into the invisible character. Many online Nepali keyboards also have dedicated ZWJ/ZWNJ keys.

Practise Half Letters Until They’re Automatic

Knowing the rule takes five minutes; typing स्वास्थ्य without stopping takes practice. Drill conjunct-heavy words — शिक्षा, प्रदेश, विद्यार्थी, मन्त्रालय, स्वतन्त्र — in a typing tutor that gives you accuracy feedback:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a half letter called in Nepali?

It is called आधा अक्षर (half letter) or हलन्त भएको अक्षर. The mark that creates it is the हलन्त (्), also called hal or virama. Two or more consonants joined this way form a संयुक्त अक्षर (conjunct letter).

Which key is halant on the Nepali keyboard?

It depends on the layout: / on the Nepali Romanized layout, D on Inscript layouts, and usually on Nepali Traditional Unicode and Preeti. Open the Windows On-Screen Keyboard (osk) to confirm on your computer.

How do I type क्ष, त्र and ज्ञ?

In Unicode they are क + ् + ष, त + ् + र and ज + ् + ञ. In phonetic tools type ksha, tra and gya. In Preeti, त्र is q, ज्ञ is 1, and क्ष is I followed by f.

How do I type र् (reph) like in धर्म or कार्य?

In Unicode type र + ् + the next consonant: र + ् + म gives र्म. In Preeti, type the following letter first and then {, because reph sits on top of it: कार्य = sfo{.

Why do half letters work in Word but break on Facebook?

Your Word document is probably in Preeti, which only looks correct on computers that have the Preeti font. Facebook, Viber and websites need Unicode. Convert the text to Unicode before you paste it.

Is it better to learn Preeti or Unicode for half letters?

Learn Unicode for everyday use — the halant rule works the same everywhere and the text displays on any device. Learn Preeti too if you are preparing for a Lok Sewa typing test or work in an office that still uses it.

Final Tip

Stop memorising conjuncts one by one. Find the halant key on your layout, remember consonant + ् + consonant, and every half letter in Nepali — from स्त to स्त्र — is just three keystrokes away.

How to type Nepali in laptop on Windows 11, Mac and Chromebook

To type Nepali in a laptop, add Nepali as a keyboard language in your laptop’s settings, then press Windows + Space (or Control + Space on a Mac) to switch between English and Nepali. You don’t need a keyboard with Nepali letters printed on it, you don’t need to buy software, and once it’s set up it works offline in every app.

The catch is choosing the right way of typing. Laptops can type Nepali with a fixed Traditional layout, a Romanized layout, an online phonetic tool or the old Preeti font — and many guides still send you to download Google Input Tools for Windows, which Google stopped offering years ago. This guide gives you the method that fits you, the exact steps for Windows 11, Mac and Chromebook, a half-letter cheat sheet and fixes for the problems people actually hit.

Quick answer: type Nepali on a Windows 11 laptop in 5 steps

  1. Open Settings → Time & language → Language & region.
  2. Next to Preferred languages, click Add a language.
  3. Search Nepali (नेपाली), select it, click Next, then Install.
  4. Press Windows + Space and pick Nepali (the taskbar shows NEP).
  5. Open Notepad and type. Press K then F and you get पा.

Which Nepali Typing Method Should You Use?

Pick by how often you type Nepali and whether an exam or office expects a specific layout. All four methods below produce Nepali on an ordinary English laptop keyboard.

Unicode vs Preeti in 60 Seconds

Unicode is the modern standard. Every Nepali letter has its own code, so Unicode text shows correctly on websites, Facebook, Gmail, Google search and any phone — no special font needed. Every method in this guide except Preeti produces Unicode.

Preeti is a font, not a language setting. It draws Nepali shapes on top of ordinary English letters, so नेपाल is really stored as “g]kfn”. Send that to someone without the Preeti font and they see the English letters. Use Preeti only when an office or an old document needs it — you can download the Preeti font with its layout here.

Good news for Preeti typists: the Windows Nepali keyboard puts most letters on the same keys as Preeti, so your muscle memory carries over and your output becomes Unicode. Have old Preeti files? Convert them with the free Preeti ↔ Unicode converter.

How to Add the Nepali Keyboard in Windows 11

This is a one-time setup that takes about five minutes. Windows downloads a small language file, so stay online until it finishes.

1

It sits next to Preferred languages.

3

Search for Nepali

Type Nepali, select नेपाली Nepali and click Next.

4

Install, but don’t change your display language

Untick Set as my Windows display language unless you want menus in Nepali, then click Install.

5

Still on Windows 10?

The path is Settings → Time & Language → Language → Add a preferred language; everything else is the same. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025, so if your laptop can run Windows 11, the upgrade is worth it for security alone.

Can You Type Nepali Phonetically in Windows?

Not with a built-in Nepali option. Windows 10 and 11 include phonetic keyboards — where you type “namaste” and get नमस्ते — for 10 Indian languages: Hindi, Bangla, Tamil, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Odia, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Nepali isn’t on Microsoft’s list. Some guides say otherwise; they are wrong. You have three real options:

1. A Romanized layout

The Nepali Unicode Romanized layout from Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya maps sounds to keys (K = क, M = म) and works offline. Its old installer can fail on Windows 10 and 11; community rebuilds exist on GitHub. Install only from a source you trust.

2. The Hindi Phonetic workaround

Add Hindi, then the Hindi Phonetic keyboard. It types Devanagari — the same script as Nepali — but its word suggestions come from a Hindi dictionary, so Nepali-only words may need fixing by hand. Fine for short notes.

3. An online phonetic tool

The easiest route if you have internet: type in a browser tool and paste the result. See typing Nepali online below.

If you added Hindi Phonetic and see “IME is not ready yet”, its dictionary is still downloading. Go to Hindi → Language options and click Download next to Basic typing.

Is Google Input Tools Still Available for Windows?

No. Google discontinued the Windows version of Google Input Tools in 2018 and removed the download from its website. Older blog posts that tell you to “download Google Input Tools Nepali” are pointing at something that no longer exists officially.

What still works from Google:

  • The Google Input Tools Chrome extension — phonetic Nepali inside the Chrome browser only, not in Word or other desktop apps.
  • Gmail — Settings → See all settings → Language → tick Enable input tools and choose Nepali.
  • Chromebooks — Google’s Nepali transliteration is built in (see below).

Don’t download Google Input Tools .exe files from random sites

Copies on download portals are unsupported and can be bundled with adware. Since Windows already has a Nepali keyboard built in, there’s no reason to take the risk.

Type Nepali Online Without Installing Anything

On a borrowed laptop, an office PC where you can’t change settings, or when you only need one paragraph, a browser tool is quickest:

  1. Open our English to Nepali Unicode converter.
  2. Type the Nepali words the way they sound: mero naam becomes मेरो नाम.
  3. Copy the Nepali text with Ctrl + C.
  4. Paste it anywhere: Word, Facebook, a government form, an email.

Three tricks for that converter

  • End a word with a backslash to keep the halant: bas\ = बस्
  • Use a slash to stop two letters joining: pratishat/ko = प्रतिशतको
  • Keep English words in curly brackets: yo {mobile} mero ho = यो mobile मेरो हो

How to Switch Between English and Nepali

You’ll switch dozens of times a day, so learn the shortcut for your laptop.

LaptopShortcutOr click
Windows 11 / 10Windows + Space (also Left Alt + Shift)ENG / NEP on the taskbar
Mac / MacBookControl + Space, or the Globe (fn) keyInput menu in the menu bar
ChromebookCtrl + Space (previous), Ctrl + Shift + Space (next)Input code on the shelf
Linux (GNOME)Super + SpaceInput indicator, top bar

Windows remembers the language per window in some apps, so if Notepad suddenly types English again, just switch once more in that window.

How to Type Nepali on a Mac or MacBook

macOS has a built-in Nepali keyboard. No download needed.

  1. Open System Settings → Keyboard.
  2. Under Text Input, click Edit next to Input Sources.
  3. Click +, search Nepali, select it and click Add.
  4. Turn on Show Input menu in menu bar.
  5. Press Control + Space (or the Globe key) to switch, and type.

See the layout: click the Input menu in the menu bar and choose Show Keyboard Viewer. It shows which Nepali letter sits on each key.

Prefer sound-based keys? Under Hindi you can add Devanagari – QWERTY, where keys follow English sounds (K gives क). It types the same Devanagari letters Nepali uses, though it is a fixed layout, not a suggestion-based phonetic tool.

How to Type Nepali on a Chromebook or Linux Laptop

Chromebook

Open Settings → Device → Keyboard and inputs → Input (wording varies slightly by ChromeOS version), click Add input methods and search Nepali. You’ll usually see two choices: Nepali with InScript keyboard (fixed keys) and a नेपाली transliteration option, where you type by sound. Pick the transliteration one if you want “namaste” to become नमस्ते.

Linux

In Ubuntu and other GNOME desktops, go to Settings → Keyboard → Add Input Source and add Nepali for the fixed layout. For sound-based typing, install the ibus-m17n package and add its Nepali Romanized input method.

How to Type Nepali in MS Word, Google Docs and Gmail

MS Word uses whatever keyboard Windows or macOS is set to. Switch to Nepali and type — there’s nothing to install inside Word. The only thing that goes wrong is the font. If letters look broken or matras sit in the wrong place, select the text and change the font to one of these:

FontUnicode?Use it for
Nirmala UIYes, built into WindowsEveryday documents, nothing to install
KalimatiYesGovernment letters and office documents in Nepal
MangalYesOlder Office templates
PreetiNoOnly old documents already typed in Preeti

Need help installing a font? Follow our guide to install a Nepali font on Windows 11.

Google Docs and Gmail work with your laptop’s Nepali keyboard like any other website. Without the keyboard installed, you can turn on Google’s own input tools in Gmail (see above) or paste text from an online converter.

How to Type Half Letters and Conjuncts in Nepali

A half letter is a consonant plus a halant (्). In Unicode you type the letter, the halant, then the next letter, and the font joins them: क + ् + य = क्य. The Windows Nepali keyboard saves keystrokes by putting common half letters and conjuncts on their own keys.

To getWindows Nepali keyboardMost phonetic tools

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I type Nepali on a laptop without internet?

Yes. Once the Nepali keyboard is added in Windows, macOS, ChromeOS or Linux, it works fully offline in every app. You only need internet for the one-time setup download and for online converters.

What is the shortcut to change the keyboard from English to Nepali?

On Windows, press Windows + Space (or Left Alt + Shift). On a Mac, press Control + Space or the Globe key. On a Chromebook, press Ctrl + Space.

Is Google Input Tools still available for Windows 11?

No. Google discontinued the Windows version in 2018. Google Input Tools now works only as a Chrome extension and inside Google services like Gmail. Use the built-in Windows Nepali keyboard instead.

Can I type Nepali using English letters on Windows?

Not with a built-in Nepali option, because Windows’ phonetic keyboards don’t include Nepali. Use an online English-to-Nepali converter, a Romanized Nepali layout, or the Hindi Phonetic keyboard as a Devanagari workaround.

Which Nepali keyboard layout is used in Lok Sewa typing tests?

Typing tests in Nepal are generally based on the Preeti / Traditional key positions rather than Romanized typing. Requirements can differ by post, so always check the official vacancy notice.

Why does my Nepali text show as boxes?

The app is using a font without Devanagari letters. Select the text and switch to a Unicode Nepali font such as Nirmala UI or Kalimati.

Do I need to install a Nepali font to type Unicode?

No. Windows, macOS and ChromeOS already include fonts that display Nepali Unicode. Install Kalimati only if your office or template asks for it.

Can I type Nepali on a MacBook?

Yes. Go to System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources, add Nepali, and switch with Control + Space. No download is needed.

The Short Version

Add Nepali in your laptop’s language settings, switch with Windows + Space or Control + Space, and use a Unicode font. If you only type Nepali occasionally, an online converter is enough. Then put ten minutes a day into Typeshala and you’ll be typing Nepali faster than you write it by hand.

Online Typeshala: Free Nepali Typing Tutor for Preeti and Unicode typing practice

If you learned computers in Nepal, you probably remember Typeshala — the old blue-screen tutor where you typed the same row of letters again and again until your fingers found the home row on their own. It worked. The problem is that the original setup was built for old Windows. On Windows 10 and 11 it often needs extra setup to run on 64-bit systems, and it never ran on a Mac, Linux laptop or Chromebook at all.

Online Typeshala is the modern answer: a free Nepali typing tutor that runs in your browser. Open it, choose Nepali or English, and start typing. There is no installer, no font setup and no account. You can use the full tool right on this page, then follow the practice plan below to reach the speed most Lok Sewa typing tests ask for.

Key takeaways

  • 100% free and browser-based — works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, Mac and Linux.
  • Nepali and English practice, with Preeti and Nepali Traditional keyboard layouts.
  • Row-by-row lessons, five difficulty levels (Easy to Master), custom text, a timed test and a leaderboard.
  • Live WPM, accuracy and timer, plus an on-screen keyboard that highlights the next key.
  • Realistic goal: about 25 WPM in Nepali, the figure most commonly quoted for Lok Sewa computer operator tests (always confirm in the vacancy notice).

Start Typing Now: Online Typeshala (Full Tool)

The complete tutor is embedded below. Click inside it, choose नेपाली or English, pick a key set and begin. Everything runs in your browser.

Prefer a bigger screen? Open Online Typeshala in a new tab. On a phone, connect a keyboard for real practice (more on that below).

What Is Online Typeshala?

Online Typeshala is a web-based Nepali and English typing tutor inspired by the classic Typeshala software that generations of Nepali students used in computer labs. It keeps what made the original effective — short drills, one keyboard row at a time, constant repetition — and adds what the old program could not: live speed and accuracy tracking, difficulty levels, your own practice text, a timed test and a leaderboard.

It is built for anyone who needs to type Nepali properly: Lok Sewa aspirants preparing for computer operator and office posts, students in school and +2 computer classes, office staff writing letters and notices, and journalists and content writers publishing in Nepali.

  2. Pick a key set. Beginners should start with Home Row. Do not jump to All Keys on day one.
  3. Select a lesson and level. Each set has several lessons marked Easy, Medium or Hard. Start at Easy.
  4. Type the highlighted text. Keep your eyes on the screen and follow the on-screen keyboard instead of your fingers.
  5. Check your score. Repeat a lesson until accuracy stays at 95% or higher, then move to the next one.
  6. Graduate to Custom and Test. Once you are comfortable with All Keys, paste real Nepali paragraphs into Custom, then use Test to track your WPM week by week.

Your Learning Path: From Home Row to Exam Speed

Most people learn Nepali typing faster when they follow the same order the tool is built around. Treat each stage as a gate: move on only when you hit the accuracy target.

STEP 1

Home Row

Anchor your fingers. Target 95%+ accuracy.

STEP 2

Top Row

Reach up and return to home every time.

STEP 3

Bottom Row

The hardest reach — go slow here.

STEP 4

Numbers

Dates, amounts and ward numbers.

STEP 5

All Keys

Mixed text, matras and half-letters.

STEP 6

Custom + Test

Real passages, timed. Aim for 25+ WPM.

Learning order used in Online Typeshala: Home Row → Top Row → Bottom Row → Numbers → All Keys → Custom & Test

Quick check: with these keys alone you can already type real words. In Preeti, g + d gives नम, and k + f gives पा. That early win is exactly why the home row comes first. For the full top- and bottom-row map, see our Typeshala Preeti key map and lesson guide.

Preeti vs Traditional Unicode vs Romanized: Which Layout Should You Learn?

This is the question most Typeshala pages skip, and it is the one that wastes the most practice time. Nepali has three common ways to type, and they are not interchangeable.

LayoutWhat it producesBest forLearning curve
PreetiA legacy font, not Unicode. Text only looks Nepali when the Preeti font is installed.Older government offices, printing presses, existing Preeti documentsSteep, but fast once learned
Nepali Traditional (Unicode)Real Unicode text that works on websites, Google, email and social media.Modern office work, Lok Sewa tests that specify Unicode, web publishingSteep; follows the same typewriter-style arrangement as Preeti
Romanized UnicodeUnicode typed phonetically (K gives क, M gives म).Casual typing, chatting, occasional postsEasy, but a different skill from Preeti/Traditional

Learn Preeti / Traditional if…

you are preparing for Lok Sewa, a computer operator post or any office job. The two layouts share largely the same key positions, so most of your muscle memory carries over from one to the other. This is what Online Typeshala trains.

Romanized is enough if…

you only type Nepali now and then for messages or social posts and no exam or employer requires a specific layout.

One rule that saves weeks: pick one layout and stay with it until you pass 25 WPM. Switching between Preeti and Romanized every few days confuses your fingers and resets your progress. If you want the deeper technical comparison, read Devanagari typing methods: InScript vs phonetic.

How Typing Speed Is Measured (WPM, Net WPM & Accuracy)

Typing tests do not count actual words. One “word” is a standard 5 keystrokes, including spaces. That keeps scores fair between long and short words.

Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Net WPM = Gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes)

Accuracy = (correct characters ÷ characters typed) × 100

Worked example (5-minute test): you type 800 characters with 20 mistakes.

  • Gross WPM = 800 ÷ 5 ÷ 5 = 32
  • Net WPM = 32 − (20 ÷ 5) = 28
  • Accuracy = 780 ÷ 800 × 100 = 97.5%

Exams care about the net figure, so every mistake costs you speed. Exact scoring differs between exams, so read the rules in your specific notice.

Why your Nepali WPM is lower than your English WPM: half-letters, matras and conjuncts often need two or three keystrokes, and many Devanagari characters sit on the Shift layer. A 25 WPM Nepali typist is doing more work per word than a 25 WPM English typist, so compare yourself against Nepali benchmarks, not English ones.

Typing Speed Benchmarks in Nepal

Where should you aim? These are the reference points most often cited by Lok Sewa preparation guides, next to general typing averages.

Why I Built a Web Version of Typeshala

I already share the classic Typeshala software for Windows on this blog, and it still works for many people. But the old setup was made for a different era of Windows. On newer machines it can need compatibility settings, and on a Mac or a borrowed laptop it simply is not an option.

So I built Online Typeshala as a lightweight web app: the same drill-based method, but something you can open on any computer in a few seconds. While building and testing it, one lesson stood out more than any feature — people who slow down and chase accuracy first end up faster than people who rush for a high WPM on day one. That is why the lessons are split by row and the difficulty only goes up when you choose to raise it.

Both versions teach the same skill. Choose the one that fits how and where you practise.

Add Online Typeshala to Your School or Institute Website

Teachers, computer institutes and Lok Sewa coaching centres can place the tutor on their own site so students practise without leaving it. Paste this code into any HTML block:

Tips to Type Nepali Faster (and Mistakes to Avoid)

Do this

  • Sit straight, wrists level, screen at eye height.
  • Keep accuracy at 95%+ before raising the level.
  • Return fingers to the home row after every reach.
  • Drill half-letters and Shift-layer characters separately.
  • Practise with real text: news, letters, notices.

Avoid this

  • Looking down at the keyboard.
  • Jumping straight to the timed test.
  • Leaving Caps Lock on — it changes Nepali characters.
  • Switching layouts every few days.
  • Practising on a phone touchscreen.

Can You Use Online Typeshala on Mobile?

The page opens on phones and tablets, but touch typing is a physical-keyboard skill. Tapping on glass does not build the finger memory an exam or office job needs. For real practice, use a laptop or desktop, a tablet with a keyboard case, or plug a USB keyboard into your Android phone with an OTG adapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Online Typeshala free?

Yes. Online Typeshala is completely free, with no account, sign-up or download required.

Do I need to install the Preeti font to practise?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so you do not need to install Preeti or any other Nepali font to practise.

Can I practise English typing too?

Yes. Switch the language to English to practise the standard QWERTY layout with the same lessons, levels and speed test.

What typing speed do I need for Lok Sewa?

Preparation guides most often quote around 25 WPM in Nepali for computer operator and similar posts, and around 35 WPM in English for bilingual posts. The exact requirement changes by post and exam cycle, so always check the official vacancy notice.

Is Online Typeshala the same as the old Typeshala software?

It follows the same drill-based method as the classic Typeshala, rebuilt for the browser with live WPM and accuracy, difficulty levels, custom text, a timed test and a leaderboard. The original Windows program is still available to download separately.

Does Online Typeshala work offline?

You need an internet connection to open it. If you want to practise completely offline, download Typeshala for Windows PC instead.

How long does it take to learn Nepali typing?

With 20 to 30 minutes of daily practice, many learners are comfortable with the full keyboard in three to four weeks. Speed keeps improving after that as long as you keep practising with real text.

Should I learn Preeti or Unicode?

If you are preparing for an exam or an office job, learn the Preeti / Nepali Traditional key positions, which largely overlap, and check which one your exam notice specifies. If you only type Nepali casually, Romanized Unicode is easier to pick up.

What Is the Typeshala Ramayana Game?

Typeshala Ramayana is a typing tutor turned into an adventure game. Classic Typeshala-style practice teaches your fingers where the keys are; this game adds a reason to keep going. Instead of typing random drills, you travel with Rama, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman through the story of Valmiki’s Ramayana, and every correct word helps the heroes win.

The game is fully bilingual. Choose English or नेपाली when you start, and the story, menus and every word you type switch to that language. That makes it useful both for kids learning English touch typing and for anyone practising Nepali Unicode typing.

Tips to Type Faster

  • Accuracy first, speed second. Clean words hit harder and keep your combo alive.
  • Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;) and use the bumps on F and J to find it without looking.
  • Look at the screen, not the keyboard. The finger guide shows which finger to use.
  • Practise weak keys for five minutes a day. Short daily sessions beat one long session a week.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Typeshala Ramayana free to play online?

Yes. The game is completely free and runs in your browser. There is nothing to download and no account to create.

Can I play Typeshala Ramayana in Nepali?

Yes. Choose नेपाली at the start, or switch any time from the language button. You need a Nepali Unicode keyboard (Traditional or Romanized) turned on in your device settings.

Does it work on mobile phones?

Yes. The game adapts to phones, tablets and desktops. A physical keyboard gives the best typing practice, but you can play with your phone’s on-screen keyboard too.

Is my progress saved?

Your chapters, stars, high score, achievements and streak are saved automatically in your browser on this device. Clearing your browser data resets them.

How is this different from the classic Typeshala software?

Classic Typeshala focuses on drills. Typeshala Ramayana keeps the same practice, including lessons, a finger guide and weak-key training, and wraps it in a story-driven game with battles, travel stages, achievements and music, so practice feels like play.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 30–40 WPM is a solid everyday speed, and 50 WPM or more is fast. In the game, Chapter 1 asks for only 15 WPM for three stars and the final battle asks for 34 WPM, so your target grows with you.

Typeshala vs Online Typing Tools (Typing.com, 10FastFingers): Which Is Best?

Typeshala vs Online Typing Tools: Typing.com and 10FastFingers Compared

Typeshala vs online typing tools typing.com and 10FastFingers comparison for Nepali and English typing

If you are learning to type in Nepal, you have probably bounced between three kinds of tools: the old Typeshala software your computer institute installed, a quick speed test on 10FastFingers, and the colourful lessons on Typing.com. They all measure words per minute, so they look interchangeable. They are not.

This guide compares Typeshala with online typing tools feature by feature, explains why your 10FastFingers score says almost nothing about your Nepali typing, and gives you a simple routine that uses each tool for what it does best.

Quick answer

  • Need Nepali typing (Preeti or Nepali Traditional layout), for a job, office work or Lok Sewa practice? Use Typeshala. Neither Typing.com nor 10FastFingers teaches Nepali.
  • Starting English touch typing from zero, especially for kids? Typing.com has the most structured lesson path.
  • Already type English and want to test or push your speed? 10FastFingers is the fastest one-minute check, with competitions and multiplayer.
  • Best overall for Nepali learners: learn and practise in Typeshala, then use 10FastFingers once a week as an English speed benchmark.

What Is Typeshala?

Typeshala is the typing tutor most Nepali computer users met first. For years it has been the default in computer institutes, cyber cafes and school labs because it teaches both Nepali and English typing on a standard keyboard, starting from the home row.

Today it comes in two forms:

  • Desktop Typeshala – the classic Windows program. It runs offline, which still matters in labs with unreliable internet. It is old 16-bit software, so on 64-bit Windows it needs a workaround or a modern alternative. You can grab it from our Typeshala download for Windows PC guide, and if it refuses to run, see the Typeshala alternative for Windows 11.
  • Online Typeshala – a browser version at typeshala.wilson.com.np with Nepali and English modes, Preeti and Nepali Traditional keyboard layouts, row-by-row lessons (home row, top row, bottom row, numbers, all keys), difficulty levels from Easy up to Master, a custom text mode, a timed test with live WPM and accuracy, an on-screen keyboard that highlights the next key, and a leaderboard. Nothing to install and no sign-up.

What Is 10FastFingers?

10FastFingers is built around one idea: a fast, repeatable one-minute typing test. The normal test uses the 200 most common words of a language with no capitals or punctuation; an advanced mode draws from a 1,000-word list. The site also offers 24-hour competitions, real-time multiplayer races, text practice with your own passages and a custom mode where you set the duration and words.

Where it shines

  • Instant result – one minute, then WPM, accuracy, correct and wrong keystrokes.
  • Competitive motivation through rankings, competitions and multiplayer.
  • Tests in 50+ languages, including Hindi and Bengali.
  • Completely free, and no account is needed just to take a test.

Where it falls short for Nepali users

  • No Nepali test. As of September 2026, Nepali is not in its language list. Hindi uses the same script but different vocabulary, and it will not help you with Preeti.
  • It does not teach. There are no lessons, no finger guide and no key-by-key progression. If you hunt and peck, it will only measure how fast you hunt and peck.
  • Easy text inflates scores. Common lowercase words without punctuation produce a higher WPM than a real office letter or an exam passage.

What Is Typing.com?

Typing.com is a full typing school in the browser. It is used heavily by schools, with lesson units arranged by grade level and an adult learner track. It tracks your problem keys and generates practice around them, and its timed tests come in 1-minute, 3-minute and 5-minute versions plus page-length tests, each with a printable certificate.

Where it shines

  • The best structured path for learning English touch typing from scratch.
  • Longer 3 and 5 minute tests give a steadier, more honest WPM than a one-minute sprint.
  • Certificates that students can print or share.
  • Extra games and digital-skills content for school use.

Where it falls short for Nepali users

  • English only for Nepali users (its other curriculums are Spanish and Portuguese).
  • Ads on the free plan, with a paid upgrade to remove them.
  • Heavy pages that feel slow on older lab computers and patchy mobile data.
  • Grade-based content is built around a US school system, which can feel odd for adult learners preparing for a job in Nepal.

Head-to-Head: How They Really Compare

1. Nepali typing support

This single factor decides the comparison for most readers. Typeshala is the only one of the three that teaches Nepali. It covers the Preeti layout, which many offices and older documents still depend on, and the Nepali Traditional layout used with Unicode fonts. If your documents use Unicode, install a font such as Kalimati first; our Kalimati font download guide walks you through it.

2. Learning structure

Typing.com and Typeshala both teach; 10FastFingers only tests. Typing.com wins for English beginners who want a polished, gamified course. Typeshala wins on focus: it drills one keyboard row at a time, which is exactly how you learn a Nepali layout where one wrong finger habit takes weeks to undo.

3. Speed tests and accuracy

All three show WPM and accuracy. 10FastFingers is the quickest check, Typing.com offers the longest standard tests, and Typeshala lets you test in the same language and layout you will use at work. For exam or job preparation, a longer test on realistic text beats a one-minute sprint on easy words every time.

4. Offline use and device requirements

Only desktop Typeshala works fully offline. That is still a real advantage in training centres and rural schools. The trade-off is compatibility with modern Windows; the online version removes that problem but needs a connection.

5. Cost, ads and privacy

All three can be used for free. Typing.com shows ads unless you pay. 10FastFingers and Typing.com ask you to create an account if you want your history saved. Typeshala needs no account at all, which suits shared lab computers.

Why Your 10FastFingers WPM Does Not Equal Your Nepali WPM

This is the gap no competitor page explains. Online tools count one word as five keystrokes. That works well for English, but Nepali behaves differently:

  • Conjuncts and vowel signs need extra keys. A single visible Nepali syllable can take two, three or more keystrokes, especially half-letters and matras.
  • Preeti uses Shift heavily. Many common characters sit on shifted keys, which slows beginners.
  • Different layouts, different numbers. Preeti, Nepali Traditional and Romanized input produce different speeds for the same person.
  • Test text matters. 10FastFingers uses the most common words with no punctuation; real letters and exam passages do not.

So a person who hits 60 WPM in English on 10FastFingers might type Nepali at less than half that speed. Neither number is wrong; they measure different skills. Track your English and Nepali speeds separately, and always test in the layout you will actually use.

Preparing for Lok Sewa or a Computer Operator Test?

Many Lok Sewa Aayog (Public Service Commission) posts, such as computer operator and some clerical and stenographer roles, include a practical typing test in Nepali and English after the written exam. Preparation guides online disagree about details: some say Preeti is still expected, others say centres have moved to Unicode, and the speed cut-offs they quote vary by post.

Important: always read the official vacancy notice for your post. It states the required layout, font and speed. Practise in exactly that setup, not in whatever your favourite website supports.

For this goal, 10FastFingers and Typing.com can only help with the English half. The Nepali half has to be practised in a Nepali tutor such as Typeshala, ideally with longer timed runs that match the exam passage length.

Which Typing Tool Should You Choose?

Choose Typeshala if you…

  • need Nepali typing in Preeti or Traditional layout
  • are preparing for Lok Sewa or an office job in Nepal
  • train students in a lab with weak internet
  • want English and Nepali in one tool

Choose Typing.com if you…

  • are a complete English beginner
  • are a parent or teacher guiding children
  • want printable certificates
  • prefer longer 3 or 5 minute tests

Choose 10FastFingers if you…

  • already touch type in English
  • want a quick daily speed check
  • enjoy competing with other typists
  • want custom-length tests with your own words

The Best Approach: Use Them Together

You do not have to pick one forever. Here is a simple weekly routine for a Nepali learner who also needs English:

DayToolWhat to do (15–20 min)
Sun, Tue, ThuTypeshala (Nepali)Row lessons until 95%+ accuracy, then one timed test
Mon, WedTypeshala (English) or Typing.comEnglish lessons; beginners follow Typing.com units
FriTypeshala custom modeType a real Nepali letter or notice from start to finish
Sat10FastFingersThree one-minute English tests; record the average

Short daily sessions work better than one long weekend session. For more drills, read our tips to increase typing speed in Typeshala.

My Experience Using All Three

I learned to type the way most people in Nepal did: on desktop Typeshala in a computer class, staring at the home row until the keys stopped feeling random. Years later, working as a developer, I started taking 10FastFingers tests for fun and was happy with my English score. Then I sat down to type a Nepali document in Preeti and felt like a beginner again. The English speed simply did not transfer.

That gap is why I built the online version of Typeshala. Old Typeshala kept breaking on newer Windows machines, and the popular online tools had nothing for Nepali layouts. What I have noticed from people using it is consistent with my own experience:

  • Learners who use only speed tests plateau quickly because they never fix finger placement.
  • Nepali accuracy improves fastest when you slow down and drill one row at a time.
  • English speed tests are a great motivator once the basics are in place, not before.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Comparing Nepali and English WPM. Track them separately.
  • Practising in the wrong layout. Preeti skill does not automatically transfer to Unicode Traditional, or the other way round.
  • Chasing speed before accuracy. Aim for 95% accuracy first; speed follows.
  • Only doing one-minute tests. Real work and exams last longer. Add 3 to 5 minute runs.
  • Looking at the keyboard. Use the on-screen keyboard in Typeshala instead of your hands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Typeshala better than Typing.com?

For Nepali typing, yes, because Typing.com does not teach Nepali at all. For English-only beginners, especially children, Typing.com has a more polished and gamified curriculum.

Does 10FastFingers have a Nepali typing test?

No. As of September 2026, Nepali is not among its 50+ test languages. Hindi is available, but it uses different vocabulary and does not cover the Preeti layout. Use Typeshala for Nepali typing tests.

Can I practise Preeti typing online?

Yes. The online Typeshala at typeshala.wilson.com.np supports the Preeti and Nepali Traditional layouts with lessons and timed tests, free and without sign-up.

Which is best for Lok Sewa typing preparation?

Use a Nepali tutor such as Typeshala for the Nepali part, in the exact layout named in your vacancy notice. Use Typing.com’s 5-minute test or Typeshala’s English mode for the English part.

Why is my Nepali typing speed so much lower than my English speed?

Nepali needs more keystrokes per word because of conjuncts, vowel signs and Shift-heavy layouts like Preeti. A lower Nepali WPM is normal; compare yourself only with other Nepali typing results.

Does Typeshala work on Windows 11?

The original desktop Typeshala is old software and often will not run on modern 64-bit Windows without a workaround. Use the online version or one of the options in our Typeshala alternative for Windows 11 guide.

Are Typing.com and 10FastFingers free?

Both can be used for free. 10FastFingers is free and account-optional. Typing.com is free with ads, and a paid plan removes them. An account on either saves your progress.

Final Verdict

Typing.com and 10FastFingers are excellent English tools, but they were never built for Nepal. If Nepali typing matters to your job, your studies or your Lok Sewa plans, Typeshala remains the tool to learn on, and the online version removes the old Windows headaches. Use Typing.com if you are an English beginner, and use 10FastFingers as a fun weekly speed check once the basics are solid.

Typeshala Keyboard Shortcuts & Lesson Guide (Preeti Key Map + 30-Day Plan)

Typeshala Keyboard Shortcuts & Lesson Guide: Preeti Key Map and 30-Day Plan

Typeshala keyboard shortcuts and lesson guide showing the Preeti Nepali keyboard layout

Typeshala has taught more people in Nepal to type than any other program, but it has never shipped with a proper manual. The menus assume you already know which key does what, the Preeti layout looks random at first, and the lessons don’t tell you how long to stay on each one. This guide fills those gaps in one place: the keys that control Typeshala itself, the Preeti key map you are actually learning, the tricks for half letters and matras, and a lesson-by-lesson plan with realistic speed targets.

Quick answer

  • Inside Typeshala: arrow keys move through menus, Enter opens a lesson, Esc goes back or quits the current screen.
  • Running it on new Windows: in DOSBox, Alt+Enter toggles full screen and Ctrl+F10 frees your mouse; in OTVDM it runs like a normal window.
  • Nepali letters (Preeti): the home row is ब क म ा न ज व प ि स (keys A to ;). Shift + a consonant key usually gives its half form.
  • Lesson order: home row, top row, bottom row, Shift keys, number row, words, then paragraphs. Move on only at 95%+ accuracy.

Who this guide is for

People search for “Typeshala keyboard shortcuts” for a few different reasons, and this guide covers each of them:

  • Beginners who opened Typeshala and don’t know how to start a lesson, exit a screen or switch between Nepali and English.
  • Lok Sewa and computer operator aspirants who need a clear practice plan and speed targets before a typing test.
  • Office staff who need to type Nepali letters, half letters and matras in Preeti quickly without hunting for keys.
  • Windows 10 and 11 users running the old program through DOSBox or OTVDM, where the window and mouse controls are different.

If you don’t have the program yet, start with the free Nepali and English Typeshala download for Windows PC, then come back here.

Typeshala navigation shortcuts (menus and lessons)

Classic Typeshala is a keyboard-first DOS program, so the mouse does little or nothing. These are the keys you’ll use constantly. Exact behaviour can vary slightly between the original build and the online remakes, so treat this as the standard pattern.

KeyWhat it does in Typeshala
↑ ↓ ← →Move the highlight between menu items, language options and lessons
EnterSelect the highlighted item, start a lesson or confirm your name on the start screen
EscLeave the current lesson or game and go back one menu level; press again from the main menu to quit
BackspaceCorrect a character where the version allows it; the mistake usually still counts against your accuracy
SpaceTypes the space between words; in lesson drills a missed space is counted as an error
ShiftReaches the upper symbol on each key, which in Preeti means half letters and extra vowels

Shortcuts when running Typeshala in DOSBox

Because Typeshala is a 16-bit program, 64-bit Windows can’t run it directly. If you use DOSBox, these emulator shortcuts save a lot of frustration:

ShortcutAction
Alt + EnterSwitch between full screen and window
Ctrl + F10Release (or capture) the mouse pointer
Ctrl + F11 / Ctrl + F12Slow down / speed up the emulated CPU if the program feels laggy or too fast
Ctrl + F9Force-close DOSBox if Typeshala freezes

With OTVDM, Typeshala opens as an ordinary window, so normal Windows keys like Alt+F4 apply. The full setup is in our OTVDM setup guide for Windows 10 (64-bit). If the program still won’t start, see Typeshala not opening on Windows 11, or skip the emulator entirely with a Typeshala alternative for Windows 11.

Windows shortcuts for switching Nepali and English

Once you leave Typeshala and type in Word, Facebook or a Lok Sewa form, you’ll switch keyboards dozens of times a day:

  • Windows key + Space – cycles through installed input languages (the fastest method on Windows 10 and 11).
  • Left Alt + Shift – the older language-switch shortcut, still on by default in most setups.
  • Ctrl + Shift – switches between layouts inside the same language, for example Nepali Traditional and Nepali Romanized.

The Preeti key map Typeshala teaches

Typeshala’s Nepali lessons use the traditional Preeti layout. Each English key produces a fixed Nepali character, so learning Typeshala really means memorising this map row by row. Here is the home row, where your fingers rest:

A
ब
S
क
D
म
F
ा
G
न
H
ज
J
व
K
प
L
ि
;
स

Blue keys (F and J) have the small bumps your index fingers find without looking.

Full letter map by row

RowEnglish key → Preeti characterFingers
HomeA ब · S क · D म · F ा · G न · H ज · J व · K प · L ि · ; सAll eight fingers rest here
TopQ त्र · W ध · E भ · R च · T त · Y थ · U ग · I ष् · O य · P उReach up, then return to home
BottomZ श · X ह · C अ · V ख · B द · N लCurl down, keep wrists still
Number1 ज्ञ · 2 द्द · 3 घ · 4 द्ध · 5 छ · 6 ट · 7 ठ · 8 ड · 9 ढ · 0 ण्Hardest row; learn it last

Notice the number row: in Preeti, the digit keys type letters such as घ, छ, ट and ड, not numbers. For the complete chart including every punctuation key, download the Preeti font with layout and keep it beside your screen for the first week.

Half letters: the Shift rule

The single most useful Preeti shortcut is a pattern, not a key: hold Shift and press a consonant key to get its half (joining) form. For example:

  • Shift + S → क् (as in क्य)
  • Shift + G → न् (as in मान्छे)
  • Shift + D → म् · Shift + K → प् · Shift + T → त्
  • Shift + ; (the colon key) → स् (as in स्कुल)

Once this clicks, you stop memorising dozens of conjuncts separately. A few keys break the rule (Shift + O gives इ, Shift + P gives ए, Shift + C gives ऋ), so drill those on their own.

Matras, vowels and marks

You wantType in PreetiExample
ा (aa)fsf → का
ि (short i)l, typed before the consonantls → कि
ी (long ii)LsL → की
ु / ू‘ / “s’ → कु
े / ै] / }s] → के
ो / ौf] / f} (aa + e / ai)sf] → को
आ ओ औcf, cf], cf} (built from अ)cfdf → आमा
ं / ँ+ / Fx+; → हंस
ृ (ri)[k[YjL → पृथ्वी
्र (ra below)|k|b]z → प्रदेश
र् (reph on top){, typed after the consonantwd{ → धर्म
् (halanta)\ (backslash)s\ → क्
। (purna biram). (full stop key)End of every sentence

Two ordering rules that trip up almost everyone

  • In Preeti, the short ि matra is typed before its consonant (l then s = कि). In Unicode layouts it’s the opposite: consonant first, then the matra.
  • The reph र् is typed after the letter it sits on (w d { = धर्म), even though it appears above the earlier letter on screen.

Typeshala lesson guide: what each stage trains

Typeshala’s lessons build the keyboard one row at a time. Lesson numbering differs between the DOS original and the online versions, so use the stages below as your map rather than a fixed lesson number.

StageKeys coveredMove on when
1. Home rowA S D F G H J K L ;95% accuracy without looking down
2. Top rowQ to P, mixed with home keys95% accuracy, no pause before top keys
3. Bottom rowZ to M plus comma and full stop95% accuracy across all three rows
4. Shift keysHalf letters and extra vowelsYou use the opposite hand’s Shift every time
5. Number row1 to 0 and Shift + numbers90% accuracy (this row is naturally slower)
6. WordsCommon Nepali words and conjuncts15 to 20 WPM with 95% accuracy
7. Paragraphs and gamesFull sentences, Free Hand, Ramayan gameSteady speed over 5+ minutes

A 30-day practice plan

Week 1 – Home row

20 minutes a day on stage 1 only. Say each Nepali letter in your head as you press it. Speed doesn’t matter yet.

Week 2 – Top and bottom rows

10 minutes reviewing home row, then 15 minutes on the new row. Add the bottom row once the top row is automatic.

Week 3 – Shift, numbers, matras

Drill the Shift rule and the matra table above. Type 20 common words (नेपाल, सरकार, काम) until they flow.

Week 4 – Speed

Paragraph practice and timed tests. Track WPM daily. A realistic target after a month of steady practice is 20 to 25 WPM.

Short daily sessions beat long weekend ones. For more speed drills, read how to increase typing speed in Typeshala and our beginner guide to touch typing techniques. If you’re preparing for a Lok Sewa typing test, check the current vacancy notice for the exact speed and layout required, since it varies by post.

After Typeshala: Preeti vs Unicode

Here’s the gap most Typeshala guides skip. Typeshala trains Preeti, which is a font-based layout: the text only looks Nepali when the Preeti font is installed. Send that text to someone without the font, or paste it into Facebook or Google, and it turns into English gibberish like “g]kfn”.

  • Use Preeti for offices, printing presses and exams that still ask for it.
  • Use Unicode for websites, social media, email and government online forms. Install the Nepali Traditional keyboard in Windows and a Unicode font such as Kalimati.
  • Good news: the Nepali Traditional Unicode keyboard keeps most Preeti letter positions, so your Typeshala practice carries over. The main change is the matra order explained above.

You can grab Preeti, Kantipur and other styles from our free Nepali fonts collection, and follow how to install Nepali fonts on Windows 11 if they don’t show up.

Common Typeshala problems and quick fixes

  • Keys type English instead of Nepali in Word: the Preeti font isn’t selected or installed. Select Preeti from the font list before you type.
  • ि appears on the wrong side: you typed it after the consonant. In Preeti, type l first.
  • Typeshala won’t open on Windows 10 or 11: 64-bit Windows can’t run 16-bit programs directly. Use OTVDM, DOSBox or an online version.
  • Accuracy is stuck below 90%: slow down. Accuracy first, speed second; every error you repeat becomes muscle memory.
  • Mouse is trapped in DOSBox: press Ctrl + F10.

From my own practice

I type Nepali regularly for client websites and for posts on this blog, and the two things that sped me up most weren’t in any Typeshala lesson. First, learning the Shift rule for half letters instead of memorising conjuncts one by one. Second, keeping a printed Preeti chart next to the monitor but forcing myself to glance at it only after a mistake, never before a keystroke.

If you’re switching to Unicode later, spend one extra day just on the ि matra order. It’s the habit that takes longest to unlearn.

Frequently asked questions

How do I exit a lesson in Typeshala?

Press Esc. It takes you back one menu level; press it again from the main menu to close the program. If Typeshala is frozen inside DOSBox, Ctrl + F9 closes DOSBox.

Which keyboard layout does Typeshala use for Nepali?

The classic program uses the traditional Preeti layout. Some online remakes also offer Traditional Unicode and Romanized Unicode, so check the layout setting before you start.

How do I type half letters in Preeti?

Hold Shift and press the consonant key. Shift + S gives क्, Shift + G gives न्, and Shift + ; gives स्. You can also add a halanta with the backslash key.

How long does it take to finish all Typeshala lessons?

With 20 to 30 minutes of daily practice, most learners cover all rows in two to three weeks and reach 20 to 25 WPM in about a month. Speed keeps rising with paragraph practice after that.

Can I use Typeshala on Windows 11?

Not directly, because it’s a 16-bit program. Run it through OTVDM or DOSBox, use an online version, or install a modern Typeshala alternative built for Windows 11.

Does Typeshala practice help with Unicode typing?

Yes. The Nepali Traditional Unicode keyboard keeps most Preeti letter positions, so your finger memory transfers. You mainly need to relearn the order of the short ि matra.
