Epic poems and verse by Nepal's greatest poets
Muna Madan is a khanda kavya (narrative poem) written in the folk jhyaure rhythm and one of the best-selling Nepali books of all time. Madan leaves his wife Muna and his old mother in Kathmandu to trade in Lhasa. On his way home he falls gravely ill, is abandoned by his companions and is nursed back to life by a kind Bhote man, a moment that teaches that humanity is greater than caste. When he finally returns, Muna has already died of grief.
Devkota is often quoted as saying that all his works could be burned, but Muna Madan must be saved, which shows how dear this evergreen poem was to him.
Shakuntala is Devkota's first epic and the first Mahakavya written in the Nepali language, famously composed in about three months. Spread over 24 cantos, it is based on Kalidasa's Sanskrit play Abhijñānaśākuntalam and shows Devkota's mastery of Sanskrit metre and diction. Scholar and translator David Rubin counted it among Devkota's greatest achievements.
A collection of short Nepali haiku by Chitwan-based writer Ramesh Prabhat. In just a few syllables each, these poems comment on power, politics and everyday life. Shared here with the author's permission.
Classic and modern Nepali upanyas
Written by former Prime Minister B.P. Koirala, Sumnima explores the powerful attraction between Somdatta, a Brahmin boy devoted to scripture and austerity, and Sumnima, a free-spirited Kirati girl. Somdatta's unexpressed love haunts him for life, and he comes to see how rigid religious rules and divisions of caste kept him from real happiness. The novel shows how denying natural human desires can all but ruin a life.
Teen Ghumti ("Three Turns") follows Indramaya, a Newar woman from Kathmandu, through three turning points in her life. Her love for Pitambar, a young man from a Brahmin family who joins the political struggle, shapes choices that challenge the society around her. The novel was adapted into a popular Nepali film in 2016.
Based on real-life events, Ek Chihan ("One Grave") portrays the struggles of a poor Newar family in Kathmandu. A landmark of Nepali social realism, it exposes poverty, the hardships of farmers and the narrow walls of caste and ethnicity, and its characters stand up against harmful social traditions by embracing inter-caste marriage.
Purple Haze speaks to anyone living an unhappy life just to impress others. Its message is simple: ignorance makes the mind as heavy as a rhinoceros, while knowledge makes it lighter than a balloon. No one else can change you; you have to change yourself, and if you keep letting the same people hurt you, it is time to stop repeating the same mistake.
A heart-touching romantic novel and one of the best-selling Nepali books of recent years. It tells the inter-caste love story of Atit and Saya, two university students in Kathmandu. Read our full chapter-wise summary.
Psychological stories and prison writings
Doshi Chasma is B.P. Koirala's celebrated collection of short stories. Through ordinary characters, he digs into the human mind, desire and inner conflict, which made these stories a turning point for psychological realism in Nepali literature.
A collection of B.P. Koirala's stories, including Sannani, Writer Baje, Ek Raat and the title story Shwet Bhairavi.
Shaped by B.P. Koirala's own painful years in prison, this work reflects on tyranny and human suffering through the story of Hitler and the Jews, and also offers a picture of Nepali society of that time.
Gita, Mahabharat and timeless wisdom
The glory of the Gita is hard to put into words. It holds the essence of the Vedas in language simple enough to follow with a little practice, yet its ideas are so deep that a lifetime of study never exhausts them. Every reading reveals something new, which is why it stays fresh for every generation.
The Bhagavad Gita, often simply called the Gita, is a 700-verse Hindu scripture in Sanskrit. It is part of the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata and records the dialogue between Lord Krishna and Arjuna on duty (dharma), action (karma), devotion (bhakti) and knowledge (jnana).
The Mahabharata is a timeless epic with something for readers of every age. Through the rivalry of the Pandavas and Kauravas and the great war of Kurukshetra, it explores duty, justice, family and the consequences of our choices. It also contains the Bhagavad Gita. Download this Nepali version and discover its wisdom for yourself.
Practical wisdom from the ancient teacher Chanakya on life, friendship, money and leadership. One example: make friends with people at your own level. A friend far below you may only seek favours and disappear when you need help, while a friend far above you can make you compare yourself and feel jealous.

Picking the right counter formation is still the fastest way to win in Top Eleven, even against a stronger squad. This guide gives you a full counter-formation chart for 75 opponent formations (attacking, balanced and defensive), plus detailed breakdowns with tactics for the 8 formations you will face most often.
How to use it: find the opponent's formation (red), check whether your squad is stronger, equal or weaker, and pick the matching counter (green).

Many formations share the same numbers, so the letters tell you the exact shape:
For example, a narrow back three (3N) is DC-DC-DC, while a wide back three (3W) is DL-DC-DR. Other tags such as ET, XT or ML mark small variants of the same shape.
Confused by a code? Comment below and I will explain it.
Field at least one more central midfielder (DMC/MC/AMC) than your opponent. This is the most repeated advice among experienced managers.
Narrow opponent: attack down both flanks. Wide opponent: go through the middle. Lone striker: push an extra player forward.
A counter formation only works with the right mentality. Use the flow below to choose the right column in the charts.
Rule of thumb, not an exact formula: compare team ratings, then factor in form, fitness and home advantage.
Three-at-the-back formations that push numbers forward. Opponent formation in red, your counter in green. Pick the column that matches your squad strength.

Number of times each formation is recommended across all 75 opponent formations above. If you can only train a few formations, start with these.
4-5-1 V-Style and the 3-2-2-2-1 Butterfly are the most flexible shapes: train them first and you will have a sensible answer to most opponents.
4-4-2 is balanced and very common, but its strength is width, not the middle. Put more bodies in central midfield and play through the gap between their lines.
Four central players against two. The AMC lives in the gap their flat midfield leaves.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Fàbregas (playmaking)
Three DCs cover their two strikers with a spare man, and the AMC plus four midfielders win the ball back high.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Shearer (finishing)
Locks the middle, then breaks forward through AML/AMR. Community tip: an attacking arrow on the DMC turns him into an extra MC when you have the ball.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Makélélé (ball-winning)
The Narrow Diamond attacks through the middle, so both flanks are weak. Do not fight it in the centre; go around it.
AML and AMR attack the empty flanks while DMC + 2 MC match their midfield.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Shearer (finishing)
Keeps a back four for safety and still uses AML/AMR to exploit the flanks.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Vidić (defending)
The V-Style is one of the most popular Top Eleven formations. Isolate the lone striker and attack the full-backs behind their AML/AMR.
Two strikers against their lone DMC screen, and four players on the flanks (DL, DR, AML, AMR).
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Shearer (finishing)
Mirror their shape, press high and hit them on the break.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Makélélé (ball-winning)
Two DMCs sit on their AM line; AML-AMC-AMR break forward. Use this only when your squad is weaker.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Vidić (defending)
Two strikers against their back four, with ML/MR doubling up on their full-backs.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Fàbregas (playmaking)

Shut down the AMC and the 4-2-3-1 loses its creativity. Double DMCs or a DMC-led diamond do the job.
Two DMCs smother their AMC; two AMCs press their two MC.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Makélélé (ball-winning)
DMC marks their AMC, and you get 4 central players against their 2 MC.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Fàbregas (playmaking)
Park the bus against their front four and counter with long balls.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Vidić (defending)
Attack the pockets either side of the DMC with AML/AMR, and do not let the lone striker get service.
Three MC match their centre; AML/AMR sit in the pockets beside the DMC.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Fàbregas (playmaking)
Matches their midfield numbers and keeps a back four against the counter.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Makélélé (ball-winning)
4-3-1-2 is completely narrow. Stretch it with wide attackers and it runs out of players.
Three MC and a DMC match their centre; AML/AMR attack the empty flanks.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Fàbregas (playmaking)
Same idea with a safer back four.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Vidić (defending)
Beat 4-3-3 in midfield. Use short passing if you are playing offensively and mixed passing when you want to counter-attack.
Five in midfield against three, and the DMC protects your three DCs from their front three.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Makélélé (ball-winning)
Back four plus DMC handles three strikers; ML/MR attack their empty flanks.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Vidić (defending)
Five defenders against three strikers, then counter down the flanks.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Vidić (defending)
Mark the two AMCs with two DMCs, then use width to stretch their narrow shape.
Two DMCs sit on their two AMCs; AML/AMR and two strikers counter fast.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Makélélé (ball-winning)
ML/MR exploit the empty flanks and the AMC supports the striker.
Top Eleven 2027 Mentor pick: Fàbregas (playmaking)

▶ Subscribe on YouTubeThere is no single best formation. Every shape can be countered, and that is why this chart exists. The most flexible counters in this guide are 4-5-1 V-Style, 3-2-2-2-1 Butterfly and 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow Diamond, because they cover most opponent formations.
Yes. The 2027 update redesigned the tactics screen and added Mentors, but formations still decide which zones of the pitch you control. Use the settings here as a starting point, choose the closest options in the new tactics screen, and check the upgraded match report to fine-tune.
Only when the opponent is close to your strength. If you are much stronger, your usual formation normally wins. Against equal or stronger teams, switching to the right counter makes the biggest difference. Keep a small set of trained formations so your players stay familiar with them.
Use the Defensive column: a compact shape (5-4-1 Flat, 3-2-2-2-1 Butterfly or 4-5-1 V-Style), defensive mentality, low pressing, force counter-attacks on, and a defensive-minded Mentor such as Vidić or Makélélé.
N means narrow (for example DC-DC-DC), W means wide (DL-DC-DR or AML-AMR), and F marks a flat line or forwards pushed up. See the formation code section at the top of this guide for diagrams.

Last updated: 27 September 2026 · Codes checked against Nepal Telecom's official Useful Short Codes page. Covers Namaste prepaid and postpaid mobile, plus landline and NT Fiber support.
Most people land on this page for one reason: money is leaving their NTC balance and they don't know why. Readers in the comments below have described the same pattern for years — a game or entertainment pack subscribed by one accidental tap, a caller tune from a festival offer, or data that kept running on pay-as-you-go after a pack ran out.
This guide is organised around fixing that. First, the causes of automatic balance deduction and how to check each one. Then every NTC service that can be switched on or off, with the activate and deactivate code side by side. If you only need a code for checking balance, recharging or transferring, our full NTC USSD codes list has all of them in one place.
Nepal Telecom does not remove balance at random. Every deduction comes from something active on your line. These are the usual culprits, roughly in order of how often they cause the problem:
Dial *400# for your main balance and *1415*55# for remaining data and validity. If you have a data pack left and balance is still dropping, the cause is a VAS or caller tune rather than PAYG.
In April 2026, Nepal Telecom added an option to disable pay-as-you-go data. With PAYG off, your mobile data simply stops when a pack ends instead of drawing from your main balance.
To turn it back on, repeat the same steps and choose Enable. NTC has also started sending a notification once you've used about 90% of a data pack, so keep an eye out for that message.
If you rely on data for something that can't stop mid-way — a ride-hailing app while travelling, or a payment in progress — PAYG gives you a buffer. For most people who buy packs regularly, turning it off is the safer default.
Every service you can switch on or off yourself, with both directions side by side. Official means the code is listed on Nepal Telecom's own short-code page. Reported means it is in use and covered by Nepali telecom news sites but not yet on that page. Unconfirmed means it comes from older guides and may have changed — if one fails, call 1498.
| Service | Activate | Deactivate | Status |

Game and entertainment packs are the services readers complain about most. They're usually triggered by tapping an ad or a pop-up, and they renew every week until cancelled. To cancel Telenet Games & Entertainment, send UNSUB GAMES to 1422.
Several readers have reported that this SMS returns an error or that they can't send SMS at all once the balance is drained. If that happens, don't keep retrying — call 1498 from the affected SIM, tell the agent the name of the service in the charge message, and ask them to remove it. You can also check subscribed services in the Nepal Telecom app.
Send UNSUB to 1455. This cancels the subscription itself, not just the current song, so the recurring fee stops.
Dial *1400*2# or send UNSUB to 1400 to turn it off. Dial *1400*1# or send SUB to 1400 to turn it back on.
Dial *1477# and choose the deactivate option to switch off the loan service so it can't be taken by accident. Many guides also list sending STOP to 1477, but the USSD menu is the method Nepal Telecom currently lists. Any outstanding loan is still recovered from your next recharge. For eligibility and repayment details, see how to take a loan (sapati) on NTC.
These don't cost money by themselves, but a wrong setting can make your phone seem broken.
Scam callers pretending to be from NTC or a bank ask people to dial a code starting with **21* followed by a mobile number. That forwards all your calls — including voice OTPs — to them. If you've dialled one, run ##002# immediately and call 1498.
Prepaid users can activate roaming before leaving Nepal by dialling *1415*7# and choosing the roaming option, or through the Nepal Telecom app. Activation and deactivation are free, and Nepal Telecom recommends switching roaming off when you return. Postpaid roaming is arranged at an NTC office.
For 4G and VoLTE, dial *444#. If the menu says your SIM isn't 4G-capable, no code will fix it; you'll need a SIM swap at an NTC office, or you can consider an NTC eSIM.
| Number | Use it for |
|---|---|
| 1498 | Mobile customer support (free from NTC) |
| 198 | Landline and NT Fiber (FTTH) repair |
| 197 | Landline number inquiry |
| *1416# | NT Fiber balance, package info and bonus data |
Temporary disconnection or transfer of a landline or fiber connection isn't done by code. Call 198 or visit your nearest NTC office with the account number from your bill.
Disable PAYG data with *444# → option 4, cancel your caller tune by sending UNSUB to 1455, turn off Missed Call Alert with *1400*2#, and use *1477# to deactivate Namaste Credit. If deductions continue, call 1498 and ask which services are active.
Dial *444#, choose option 4 and select Disable. Your mobile data will then stop when a pack ends instead of using your main balance.
Send UNSUB GAMES to 1422. If the SMS fails or you can't send SMS, call 1498 from the same SIM and ask customer care to remove the service.
Send UNSUB to 1455. This cancels the CRBT subscription and stops its recurring charge.
Dial ##21# to cancel unconditional forwarding, or ##002# to cancel every type of call diversion at once. Dial *#21# to check what's active.
Dial *1415*7# from your prepaid NTC SIM and choose the deactivate option. It is free.
