How to transfer balance from NTC to NTC using the USSD code, Nepal Telecom app and Self-Care

Quick answer

To transfer balance from one NTC number to another, dial *422*SecurityCode*RecipientNumber*Amount# from your NTC prepaid SIM.

  • Don’t know your security code? Send SCODE to 1415 by SMS.
  • No code at all? Use Transfer Balance in the Nepal Telecom app, or Self-Care on ntc.net.np.
  • Limits: Rs. 10 to Rs. 500 per transfer, up to 20 transfers a day, prepaid GSM only.

I’ve used an NTC prepaid line as my main number for more than a decade, and balance transfer is still the fastest way to help someone who has run out of credit in the middle of a call or before a data pack renewal. The process is simple once you understand the code, but most people get stuck on one of three things: the security code, the Rs. 500 limit, or a vague “Connection problem or invalid MMI code” error.

This guide covers all three official methods, shows you how the USSD code is built piece by piece, and adds what most guides skip: which method to pick, how to send more than Rs. 500, what to do when a transfer fails, and how people lose their balance to security-code scams.

Which NTC Balance Transfer Method Should You Use?

Nepal Telecom officially supports three ways to send balance: the Nepal Telecom app, a USSD code, and Self-Care on its website. They all move the same balance with the same limits. The difference is what you need on hand.

Pick your method in 10 seconds

Do you have mobile data or Wi-Fi right now?
↓

NO internet

Use the USSD code. Works on any phone, including basic keypad phones.

You’ll need your 8-digit security code (SMS SCODE to 1415).

YES, I have internet

On a smartphone, use the Nepal Telecom app. On a laptop, use Self-Care at ntc.net.np.

The app confirms with a one-time password (OTP) sent to your phone.

MethodInternet needed?How it’s confirmedBest for
USSD *422#NoYour security code inside the dialled codeKeypad phones, no data, quick repeat transfers
Nepal Telecom appYesOTP sent to your numberSmartphone users who don’t remember their code
Self-Care (ntc.net.np)YesYour Self-Care loginSending from a laptop or desktop

Method 1: Transfer Balance from NTC to NTC Using the USSD Code

This is the classic method and the only one that works with zero internet. It takes three steps.

Step 1: Get your NTC security code

  • Open your SMS app on the phone with the NTC SIM.
  • Type SCODE and send it to 1415.
  • You’ll get an SMS reply with your 8-digit security code. Save it somewhere private, not in a note anyone else can open.

The security code is tied to your SIM, not to one transfer, so you usually only need to request it once.

Step 2: Build the code (it’s easier than it looks)

The official format is *422*SecurityCode*DestinationNumber*Amount#. Every piece is separated by a star, and the whole thing ends with a hash:

*422*
Service code
12345678
Your 8-digit SCODE
*
Star
98XXXXXXXX
Receiver’s NTC number
*
Star
100
Amount (Rs. 10–500)
#
End

Example: *422*12345678*98XXXXXXXX*100# sends Rs. 100.

  • Type the amount as a plain number: 100, not “Rs. 100” or “100.00”.
  • Type the receiver’s full 10-digit mobile number with no spaces or dashes.
  • Don’t add a star before the final hash.

Step 3: Dial, then confirm it worked

  • Press the call button. On a dual-SIM phone, make sure you’re dialling from the NTC SIM.
  • Wait for the on-screen message and the confirmation SMS.
  • Dial *400# to check your remaining balance, and ask the receiver to do the same.

From experience

When I’m sending to a number I’ve never typed before, I send the minimum Rs. 10 first and wait for the other person to confirm it arrived. It costs one of your 20 daily transfers, but it’s the cheapest insurance against a single wrong digit, because a transfer to the wrong number can’t simply be undone.

For the balance check code and every other short code in one place, see my complete NTC USSD codes list.

Method 2: Transfer Balance with the Nepal Telecom App

If you have a smartphone and data (or Wi-Fi), the app is the easiest route because it confirms with an OTP instead of making you remember a code.

  1. Install the official Nepal Telecom app from the Play Store or App Store.
  2. Register or log in with your NTC mobile number.
  3. Tap Transfer Balance on the home screen.
  4. Enter the receiver’s NTC number and the amount (Rs. 10–500).
  5. Confirm, then enter the OTP sent to your phone to complete the transfer.

Nepal Telecom’s own app FAQ says you can send balance from your prepaid mobile to any other NT mobile this way. If a newer version of the app ever asks for a security code, it’s the same SCODE you get from 1415.

Tip

Only download the app published by Nepal Telecom. Copycat “balance transfer” apps can’t move NTC balance and some exist only to collect your number and OTP.

Method 3: Transfer Balance Using Self-Care on the NTC Website

Handy if you’re at a computer and your phone is low on battery or storage.

  1. Go to ntc.net.np and open Self Care.
  2. Register once with your mobile number, or Login if you already have an account.
  3. Open the Balance Transfer option in your dashboard.
  4. Enter the receiver’s number and the amount, then confirm.

NTC Balance Transfer Limits and Eligibility

These rules come straight from Nepal Telecom’s Balance Transfer page and apply to all three methods:

RuleWhat it means for you
Minimum per transferRs. 10
Maximum per transferRs. 500
Transfers per dayUp to 20
Who can sendNTC prepaid GSM users only
Postpaid sendersNot supported
NTC to Ncell (or Ncell to NTC)Not possible; balance can’t cross operators
Service chargeNone listed by Nepal Telecom

How to send more than Rs. 500

There’s no single transfer above Rs. 500, but you can split a bigger amount into several transfers on the same day. For example, to send Rs. 1,250:

Sending Rs. 1,250 = 3 transfers

Transfer 1: *422*SCODE*98XXXXXXXX*500#
Rs. 500
Transfer 2: *422*SCODE*98XXXXXXXX*500#
Rs. 500
Transfer 3: *422*SCODE*98XXXXXXXX*250#
Rs. 250

On paper, 20 transfers of Rs. 500 add up to Rs. 10,000 in one day, as long as you actually have that much balance. In practice, if someone needs a large amount, an online recharge through eSewa, Khalti, IME Pay or a bank app is quicker than twenty USSD sessions.

Can NTC postpaid users transfer balance?

No. Nepal Telecom limits balance transfer to prepaid GSM users. If you’re on postpaid and want to help someone, recharge their number online instead, or look at NTC’s gift pack options for data and voice.

Can you transfer balance from NTC to Ncell?

No. Each operator keeps its own balance, so NTC-to-Ncell and Ncell-to-NTC transfers aren’t possible. If you’re on Ncell, follow my separate guide on how to transfer balance in Ncell.

Balance Transfer Doesn’t Extend Validity: Know the Alternatives

This is the detail most people miss. A balance transfer adds money to the receiver’s account, but it doesn’t push their SIM’s validity date forward. If the receiver’s validity has expired, the transferred balance won’t fix that. Pick the right tool for the problem:

OptionWho paysBest when
Balance transfer (*422#)Your NTC prepaid balanceSomeone needs a small amount right now and their SIM is still valid
Online rechargeeSewa, Khalti, IME Pay, bank app or cardLarger amounts, or when a proper recharge is needed rather than a top-up
Namaste Credit (*1477#)An emergency loan on the receiver’s own numberThe receiver is out of balance and nobody nearby can send any

NTC Balance Transfer Not Working? Common Errors and Fixes

Invalid security codeOld or mistyped SCODESend SCODE to 1415 again and use the code in the latest reply
Insufficient balanceYou don’t have enough main balance for the amountCheck with *400# and send a smaller amount

No confirmation SMSSMS delivery delayCheck both balances with *400# before sending again, so you don’t send twice
Can’t transfer at allYou’re on postpaid, or sending to a non-NTC numberBalance transfer is NTC prepaid only; use an online recharge

If none of these fixes work, call Nepal Telecom mobile customer care on 1498 from your NTC SIM. If SCODE requests keep failing, it’s also worth confirming that the SIM is registered in your name; here’s how to check the SIM owner name for NTC and Ncell.

Keep Your Security Code Safe: The Scam to Watch For

Your SCODE is the only thing standing between your balance and anyone who knows your number. The common trick goes like this:

1. The call

Someone claims to be from NTC, a prize draw or a bank and says you’ve won something.

2. The ask

They ask for your security code, or tell you to dial a *422* code “to verify”.

3. The loss

That code sends your balance to their number, up to Rs. 500 at a time.

  • Nobody from Nepal Telecom will ask for your SCODE. Treat anyone who does as a scammer.
  • Never dial a *422* code that someone else dictates to you.
  • Don’t share your OTP from the app either; it approves the transfer just like the code does.
  • If you think someone has your code, call 1498 and ask what they can do to secure your account.

Sent to the wrong number? A transfer to a valid NTC number goes through and there’s no self-service undo. Politely call or text the person who received it and ask them to send it back, and contact 1498 if they don’t respond. This is exactly why the Rs. 10 test transfer is worth it for new numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the code to transfer balance from NTC to NTC?

Dial *422*SecurityCode*RecipientNumber*Amount# from your NTC prepaid SIM. For example, *422*12345678*98XXXXXXXX*100# sends Rs. 100 to 98XXXXXXXX.

How do I get my NTC security code?

Send an SMS with the text SCODE to 1415. You’ll get an 8-digit security code by SMS. Keep it private.

Can I transfer NTC balance without a security code?

Yes. Use the Transfer Balance feature in the official Nepal Telecom app, which confirms with an OTP, or use Self-Care on ntc.net.np.

What is the minimum and maximum NTC balance transfer amount?

You can transfer from Rs. 10 up to Rs. 500 per transfer, with a maximum of 20 transfers per day.

How can I send more than Rs. 500 in NTC?

Split the amount into several transfers of Rs. 500 or less. For Rs. 1,250, send Rs. 500, Rs. 500 and Rs. 250. You can make up to 20 transfers a day.

Is there a charge for NTC balance transfer?

Nepal Telecom doesn’t list a service charge for balance transfer. Check your balance with *400# before and after if you want to confirm the exact amount deducted.

Can NTC postpaid users transfer balance?

No. Balance transfer is only available to NTC prepaid GSM users.

Can I transfer balance from NTC to Ncell?

No. Balance can only be transferred between NTC numbers, not to or from Ncell.

Does balance transfer increase SIM validity?

No. The receiver gets the balance, but their SIM validity date doesn’t change.

What if I transfer balance to the wrong NTC number?

The transfer can’t be reversed by yourself. Contact the person who received it and ask them to send it back, or call NTC customer care on 1498. Sending Rs. 10 first to a new number helps avoid this.

Online Typeshala: Free Nepali Typing Tutor for Preeti and Unicode typing practice

If you learned computers in Nepal, you probably remember Typeshala — the old blue-screen tutor where you typed the same row of letters again and again until your fingers found the home row on their own. It worked. The problem is that the original setup was built for old Windows. On Windows 10 and 11 it often needs extra setup to run on 64-bit systems, and it never ran on a Mac, Linux laptop or Chromebook at all.

Online Typeshala is the modern answer: a free Nepali typing tutor that runs in your browser. Open it, choose Nepali or English, and start typing. There is no installer, no font setup and no account. You can use the full tool right on this page, then follow the practice plan below to reach the speed most Lok Sewa typing tests ask for.

Key takeaways

  • 100% free and browser-based — works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, Mac and Linux.
  • Nepali and English practice, with Preeti and Nepali Traditional keyboard layouts.
  • Row-by-row lessons, five difficulty levels (Easy to Master), custom text, a timed test and a leaderboard.
  • Live WPM, accuracy and timer, plus an on-screen keyboard that highlights the next key.
  • Realistic goal: about 25 WPM in Nepali, the figure most commonly quoted for Lok Sewa computer operator tests (always confirm in the vacancy notice).

Start Typing Now: Online Typeshala (Full Tool)

The complete tutor is embedded below. Click inside it, choose नेपाली or English, pick a key set and begin. Everything runs in your browser.

Prefer a bigger screen? Open Online Typeshala in a new tab. On a phone, connect a keyboard for real practice (more on that below).

What Is Online Typeshala?

Online Typeshala is a web-based Nepali and English typing tutor inspired by the classic Typeshala software that generations of Nepali students used in computer labs. It keeps what made the original effective — short drills, one keyboard row at a time, constant repetition — and adds what the old program could not: live speed and accuracy tracking, difficulty levels, your own practice text, a timed test and a leaderboard.

It is built for anyone who needs to type Nepali properly: Lok Sewa aspirants preparing for computer operator and office posts, students in school and +2 computer classes, office staff writing letters and notices, and journalists and content writers publishing in Nepali.

Features at a Glance

Row-by-row lessons

Separate sets for the Home Row, Top Row, Bottom Row, Numbers and All Keys, so you learn the keyboard in small pieces.

Five difficulty levels

Easy, Medium, Hard, Expert and Master — move up only when your accuracy holds.

Live WPM & accuracy

Speed, accuracy and a timer update as you type, so you see mistakes the moment they happen.

On-screen keyboard

A Nepali keyboard map highlights the next key, so you stop looking down at your hands.

Custom text & timed test

Paste any Nepali or English passage to practise real documents, then run a timed test to measure yourself.

Compare your best scores with other learners — a small push that keeps daily practice going.

How to Use Online Typeshala, Step by Step

  1. Choose your language. Select नेपाली for Nepali or English for QWERTY practice.
  2. Pick a key set. Beginners should start with Home Row. Do not jump to All Keys on day one.
  3. Select a lesson and level. Each set has several lessons marked Easy, Medium or Hard. Start at Easy.
  4. Type the highlighted text. Keep your eyes on the screen and follow the on-screen keyboard instead of your fingers.
  5. Check your score. Repeat a lesson until accuracy stays at 95% or higher, then move to the next one.
  6. Graduate to Custom and Test. Once you are comfortable with All Keys, paste real Nepali paragraphs into Custom, then use Test to track your WPM week by week.

Your Learning Path: From Home Row to Exam Speed

Most people learn Nepali typing faster when they follow the same order the tool is built around. Treat each stage as a gate: move on only when you hit the accuracy target.

STEP 1

Home Row

Anchor your fingers. Target 95%+ accuracy.

STEP 2

Top Row

Reach up and return to home every time.

STEP 3

Bottom Row

The hardest reach — go slow here.

STEP 4

Numbers

Dates, amounts and ward numbers.

STEP 5

All Keys

Mixed text, matras and half-letters.

STEP 6

Custom + Test

Real passages, timed. Aim for 25+ WPM.

Learning order used in Online Typeshala: Home Row → Top Row → Bottom Row → Numbers → All Keys → Custom & Test

Home-row finger map (Preeti layout)

Your fingers rest on these ten keys and return to them after every reach. Learn this map first — every other lesson builds on it.

Preeti vs Traditional Unicode vs Romanized: Which Layout Should You Learn?

This is the question most Typeshala pages skip, and it is the one that wastes the most practice time. Nepali has three common ways to type, and they are not interchangeable.

LayoutWhat it producesBest forLearning curve
PreetiA legacy font, not Unicode. Text only looks Nepali when the Preeti font is installed.Older government offices, printing presses, existing Preeti documentsSteep, but fast once learned
Nepali Traditional (Unicode)Real Unicode text that works on websites, Google, email and social media.Modern office work, Lok Sewa tests that specify Unicode, web publishingSteep; follows the same typewriter-style arrangement as Preeti
Romanized UnicodeUnicode typed phonetically (K gives क, M gives म).Casual typing, chatting, occasional postsEasy, but a different skill from Preeti/Traditional

Learn Preeti / Traditional if…

you are preparing for Lok Sewa, a computer operator post or any office job. The two layouts share largely the same key positions, so most of your muscle memory carries over from one to the other. This is what Online Typeshala trains.

Romanized is enough if…

you only type Nepali now and then for messages or social posts and no exam or employer requires a specific layout.

One rule that saves weeks: pick one layout and stay with it until you pass 25 WPM. Switching between Preeti and Romanized every few days confuses your fingers and resets your progress. If you want the deeper technical comparison, read Devanagari typing methods: InScript vs phonetic.

How Typing Speed Is Measured (WPM, Net WPM & Accuracy)

Typing tests do not count actual words. One “word” is a standard 5 keystrokes, including spaces. That keeps scores fair between long and short words.

Gross WPM = (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Net WPM = Gross WPM − (uncorrected errors ÷ minutes)

Accuracy = (correct characters ÷ characters typed) × 100

Worked example (5-minute test): you type 800 characters with 20 mistakes.

  • Gross WPM = 800 ÷ 5 ÷ 5 = 32
  • Net WPM = 32 − (20 ÷ 5) = 28
  • Accuracy = 780 ÷ 800 × 100 = 97.5%

Exams care about the net figure, so every mistake costs you speed. Exact scoring differs between exams, so read the rules in your specific notice.

Why your Nepali WPM is lower than your English WPM: half-letters, matras and conjuncts often need two or three keystrokes, and many Devanagari characters sit on the Shift layer. A 25 WPM Nepali typist is doing more work per word than a 25 WPM English typist, so compare yourself against Nepali benchmarks, not English ones.

Typing Speed Benchmarks in Nepal

Where should you aim? These are the reference points most often cited by Lok Sewa preparation guides, next to general typing averages.

Cut-offs vary by post and exam cycle. Always confirm the exact requirement in the official notice on the Public Service Commission website. For exam-day strategy, see our Typeshala for Lok Sewa typing test prep guide.

A 4-Week Practice Plan (20–30 Minutes a Day)

Short daily sessions beat long weekend marathons. Here is a plan built around the sections of Online Typeshala.

Why I Built a Web Version of Typeshala

I already share the classic Typeshala software for Windows on this blog, and it still works for many people. But the old setup was made for a different era of Windows. On newer machines it can need compatibility settings, and on a Mac or a borrowed laptop it simply is not an option.

So I built Online Typeshala as a lightweight web app: the same drill-based method, but something you can open on any computer in a few seconds. While building and testing it, one lesson stood out more than any feature — people who slow down and chase accuracy first end up faster than people who rush for a high WPM on day one. That is why the lessons are split by row and the difficulty only goes up when you choose to raise it.

Online Typeshala vs Typeshala Download for Windows

Both versions teach the same skill. Choose the one that fits how and where you practise.

Tips to Type Nepali Faster (and Mistakes to Avoid)

Do this

  • Sit straight, wrists level, screen at eye height.
  • Keep accuracy at 95%+ before raising the level.
  • Return fingers to the home row after every reach.
  • Drill half-letters and Shift-layer characters separately.
  • Practise with real text: news, letters, notices.

Avoid this

  • Looking down at the keyboard.
  • Jumping straight to the timed test.
  • Leaving Caps Lock on — it changes Nepali characters.
  • Switching layouts every few days.
  • Practising on a phone touchscreen.

Can You Use Online Typeshala on Mobile?

The page opens on phones and tablets, but touch typing is a physical-keyboard skill. Tapping on glass does not build the finger memory an exam or office job needs. For real practice, use a laptop or desktop, a tablet with a keyboard case, or plug a USB keyboard into your Android phone with an OTG adapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Online Typeshala free?

Yes. Online Typeshala is completely free, with no account, sign-up or download required.

Do I need to install the Preeti font to practise?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so you do not need to install Preeti or any other Nepali font to practise.

Can I practise English typing too?

Yes. Switch the language to English to practise the standard QWERTY layout with the same lessons, levels and speed test.

What typing speed do I need for Lok Sewa?

Preparation guides most often quote around 25 WPM in Nepali for computer operator and similar posts, and around 35 WPM in English for bilingual posts. The exact requirement changes by post and exam cycle, so always check the official vacancy notice.

Is Online Typeshala the same as the old Typeshala software?

It follows the same drill-based method as the classic Typeshala, rebuilt for the browser with live WPM and accuracy, difficulty levels, custom text, a timed test and a leaderboard. The original Windows program is still available to download separately.

Does Online Typeshala work offline?

You need an internet connection to open it. If you want to practise completely offline, download Typeshala for Windows PC instead.

How long does it take to learn Nepali typing?

With 20 to 30 minutes of daily practice, many learners are comfortable with the full keyboard in three to four weeks. Speed keeps improving after that as long as you keep practising with real text.

Should I learn Preeti or Unicode?

If you are preparing for an exam or an office job, learn the Preeti / Nepali Traditional key positions, which largely overlap, and check which one your exam notice specifies. If you only type Nepali casually, Romanized Unicode is easier to pick up.

What Is the Typeshala Ramayana Game?

Typeshala Ramayana is a typing tutor turned into an adventure game. Classic Typeshala-style practice teaches your fingers where the keys are; this game adds a reason to keep going. Instead of typing random drills, you travel with Rama, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman through the story of Valmiki’s Ramayana, and every correct word helps the heroes win.

The game is fully bilingual. Choose English or नेपाली when you start, and the story, menus and every word you type switch to that language. That makes it useful both for kids learning English touch typing and for anyone practising Nepali Unicode typing.

Tips to Type Faster

  • Accuracy first, speed second. Clean words hit harder and keep your combo alive.
  • Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;) and use the bumps on F and J to find it without looking.
  • Look at the screen, not the keyboard. The finger guide shows which finger to use.
  • Practise weak keys for five minutes a day. Short daily sessions beat one long session a week.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Typeshala Ramayana free to play online?

Yes. The game is completely free and runs in your browser. There is nothing to download and no account to create.

Can I play Typeshala Ramayana in Nepali?

Yes. Choose नेपाली at the start, or switch any time from the language button. You need a Nepali Unicode keyboard (Traditional or Romanized) turned on in your device settings.

Does it work on mobile phones?

Yes. The game adapts to phones, tablets and desktops. A physical keyboard gives the best typing practice, but you can play with your phone’s on-screen keyboard too.

Is my progress saved?

Your chapters, stars, high score, achievements and streak are saved automatically in your browser on this device. Clearing your browser data resets them.

How is this different from the classic Typeshala software?

Classic Typeshala focuses on drills. Typeshala Ramayana keeps the same practice, including lessons, a finger guide and weak-key training, and wraps it in a story-driven game with battles, travel stages, achievements and music, so practice feels like play.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 30–40 WPM is a solid everyday speed, and 50 WPM or more is fast. In the game, Chapter 1 asks for only 15 WPM for three stars and the final battle asks for 34 WPM, so your target grows with you.

Birth Certificate Apply Online Nepal 2026 | Janma Darta Full Guide

Birth Certificate (Janma Darta) Apply Online in Nepal: 2026 Step-by-Step Guide

Updated: 19 September 2026  ·  By Wilson Shrestha  ·  Reading time: 11 minutes  ·  Applies to all 753 local levels of Nepal

Birth certificate (janma darta) apply online Nepal — DoNIDCR online vital registration portal guide

Short answer: You can fill the janma darta (birth registration) form online for free at public.donidcr.gov.np. The system then sends a token number to your mobile. That token is not the certificate — you must carry it to your ward office, show the original documents, and collect the printed birth certificate there. Registration is free within 35 days of birth, and the token usually expires in 30 days, so do not sit on it.

If you have just had a baby in Nepal — or you are an adult who never got registered — you have probably searched for birth certificate apply online Nepal and landed on a government page in Nepali that assumes you already know what a "सूचक" is, or a blog that tells you to "visit the official portal" without ever naming it.

This guide fixes that. It is built from the Department of National ID and Civil Registration's own published FAQ and rules, the actual behaviour of the online portal, and the instructions individual municipalities publish for their own citizens. It gives you the exact URLs, the exact document list, what the fee really is (it is not the same everywhere), and the three or four things that quietly cause rejection at the ward counter.

1. What janma darta actually is (and what "online" really means)

Janma darta (जन्म दर्ता) is the legal recording of a birth with the Local Registrar — an officer sitting in your ward office. Once recorded, the ward issues a birth registration certificate, which is the document schools, passport offices, banks and the citizenship process all ask for.

It is governed by the National ID and Civil Registration Act, 2076 and its Rules, 2077, and supervised nationally by the Department of National ID and Civil Registration (DoNIDCR) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The ward office registers; the Department maintains the national record.

The part every other guide glosses over

Nepal's birth registration is online-assisted, not online-complete. Here is the honest breakdown of what the portal does and does not do:

StageCan you do it online?Reality in 2026
Filling the information form (Anusuchi-2)YesFully online at public.donidcr.gov.np — no ward visit needed to fill it
Getting a token / application numberYesDelivered by SMS to the mobile number you entered
Uploading scanned documentsPartly / NoMost local levels still verify original documents at the counter
Verification of the informant (सूचक)NoPhysical presence of the father, mother or eligible family member is required
Paying the late fee (if any)NoPaid in cash at the ward office
Receiving the certificateNoPrinted, signed and stamped at the ward office; collected in person

So "apply online" saves you one trip and a lot of queue time — it does not eliminate the ward office. Any article promising a fully paperless birth certificate in Nepal today is wrong, and following it will waste your 35-day window.

2. Janma darta online registration: full step-by-step process

There are two legitimate entry points, and they lead to the same system:

  • Central portal: public.donidcr.gov.np — the one to use if you are unsure.
  • Your municipality's own link: many palikas (Kathmandu Metropolitan, Chandragiri, Kirtipur, Madhyapur Thimi, Dakshinkali, Gokarneshwor and dozens more) publish a link labelled "अनलाइन जन्म दर्ता प्रणाली (सेवाग्राही)" on their website. It is the same backend.
  1. Confirm your ward is on the online system first

This is the step nobody mentions, and it is the single biggest time-waster. Not every ward office in Nepal processes online applications. DoNIDCR publishes a list of wards that register vital events through the online information system. Before you fill anything, check that list — or simply call your ward office and ask: "के तपाईंको वडामा अनलाइन जन्म दर्ता निवेदन आउँछ?" If the answer is no, you fill the paper Anusuchi-2 form at the counter instead, and the rest of this guide still applies.

  2. Open the portal and choose "Click Here To Register"

On the homepage of public.donidcr.gov.np, select the registration option, then choose Birth Registration (जन्म दर्ता) from the list of vital events (birth, death, marriage, migration, divorce). Use a desktop browser if you can — the form is dense and older government forms behave badly on small screens.

  3. Fill the child's details exactly as they will appear forever

Full name, sex, date of birth in Bikram Sambat, place of birth (district, local level, ward), and whether the birth happened at a health institution or at home. Spell the name in Nepali exactly as you want it on every future document — school certificates, citizenship and passport will all be matched against this.

  4. Fill parent and grandparent details

Father's and mother's names, citizenship numbers and permanent address, plus grandfather's and grandmother's details. Copy these character by character from the citizenship certificates in front of you. A single mismatched spelling between the citizenship and this form is the most common rejection reason at the counter.

  5. Enter the informant (सूचक) details

The informant is the person legally giving the information. Per DoNIDCR, for a birth this is the father or mother, and in their absence a family member aged 18 or above. The informant's citizenship is mandatory because the state needs a responsible, identifiable person behind the record.

  6. Select the ward office where you will collect the certificate

You may register at the ward of your permanent address or the ward where the birth occurred. Choose the one you can physically reach. Government employees on active service can, with an office recommendation, register at the ward where their office is located.

  7. Enter a working Nepali mobile number and submit

The token arrives as an SMS on this number. Use a number that will stay active and that you control — not the hospital's, not a relative's abroad.

  8. Save the token number immediately

Screenshot it and write it down. The token is your only proof that the application exists in the system.

  9. Go to the ward office with the token and original documents

The registrar pulls up your submitted form by token, verifies the originals, collects the late fee if applicable, prints the certificate, and has it signed and stamped. Most wards hand it over the same day; some ask you to return the following working day.

⏳ The 30-day token trap — this is the gap in every competing article. Several municipalities explicitly state that the token number must be used at the ward office within 30 days. After that the token is dead and you have to fill the whole form again from scratch. Combine this with the 35-day free-registration window and the practical rule is simple: apply online and visit the ward within the same week.

3. Janma darta online registration login — the confusion explained

A large share of people searching for "janma darta online registration login" end up on a login screen, type in guesses, fail, and assume the system is broken. It is not. There are three different DoNIDCR systems and only one of them is for you.

SystemWho it is forDo you need a login?
public.donidcr.gov.np
Online vital event application
General public — youNo login. You fill a form and get a token by SMS. There is no citizen username or password for birth registration.
online.donidcr.gov.np
VERSP-MIS
Ward secretaries, local registrars, municipality staffYes — staff credentials issued by the Department. A citizen cannot and should not log in here.
citizenportal.donidcr.gov.np
Citizen Portal
National ID holdersYes — mobile number + OTP. Used for NID services and eNID download, not for birth registration.

In short: if a page is asking you for a username and password to register a birth, you are on the wrong page. Go back to public.donidcr.gov.np.

The Citizen Portal is worth knowing about separately, because it is where the National ID ecosystem lives. If you need it, we have written full walkthroughs for downloading your eNID in Nepal and for checking your NID card status online.

4. Download birth certificate Nepal online: the honest 2026 answer

This is the highest-volume question with the worst answers on the internet, so let us be precise.

Can you download an official Nepali birth certificate as a PDF today?

No — not as a legally valid certificate. As of September 2026, the birth registration certificate is issued as a signed and sealed physical document by the local registrar. There is no citizen-facing button anywhere on a government site that produces a downloadable, legally accepted janma darta PDF. Blogs that show a "download" step are describing either the token slip or a municipality's blank form.

What you can do online

  • Download and print the blank information form (Anusuchi-2) from the DoNIDCR website or your municipality's site, fill it by hand, and take it in. Useful when your ward is not on the online system.
  • Check the status of your token by phone with the ward office, quoting the token number.
  • Request a duplicate (प्रतिलिपि) if your original is lost or damaged — but this is applied for at the ward that holds the record, not online.

What is coming — and why it matters

In 2026 the Department of Information Technology confirmed that work has begun on integrating civil registration records — birth, marriage and divorce certificates — into the Nagarik App, so that these certificates become viewable digitally alongside other government services. The direction of travel is clear: digital birth certificates are coming, and they will most likely arrive through the Nagarik App and the Citizen Portal rather than through a separate download page.

Until that goes live, treat "download birth certificate Nepal online" as a trap query. Any third-party website offering to generate or deliver your Nepali birth certificate as a PDF for a fee is not a government service. Do not upload citizenship scans to it.

5. Documents required for birth registration (official DoNIDCR list)

This is the Department's own published list, not a blogger's recollection:

DocumentRequired whenNotes
Copy of mother's or father's citizenship certificateAlwaysOriginal carried for verification
Copy of the informant's (सूचक) citizenship certificateAlwaysIf the informant is the parent, this is the same document
Birth report from the health institutionBirth in a hospital / health postThe hospital discharge or birth report card
Immunisation (khop) cardBirth at homeStands in place of the hospital report
Police report regarding the fatherFather missing or whereabouts unknownRegistration still proceeds
Ward sarjamin muchulka or police reportOnly if the registrar needs further verificationTypically for late registrations

🚫 Myth to delete from your checklist: "you need the parents' marriage certificate." DoNIDCR states plainly that a marriage registration certificate is not mandatory for a child's birth registration. Several competing guides — including law-firm blogs — still list it as a required document. Individual ward offices sometimes ask for it out of habit; if yours does and you do not have one, you are entitled to point to the Department's position. Carry it if you have it, but its absence is not legal grounds to refuse registration.

6. Fees, the 35-day rule and late registration

The 35-day rule

A birth must be registered with the local registrar within 35 days of the birth. Within that window, registration is completely free. After 35 days, registration is still allowed — you never lose the right to be registered — but a late fee (विलम्ब शुल्क) applies.

The fee is not the same across Nepal — and that is a real gap

Nearly every article online quotes a single flat late fee. In reality the late fee is set through each local level's own financial act, so it varies. Real published examples from municipality citizen charters:

Local level (example)Within 35 daysAfter 35 days
Chandannath Municipality, JumlaFreeRs. 50
Gujara Municipality, RautahatFreeRs. 50
Kanepokhari Rural Municipality, MorangFreeRs. 100
Rupa Rural Municipality, KaskiFreeRs. 500

Practical takeaway: budget Rs. 50–500 for a late registration and confirm the exact figure with your own ward. Do not be surprised when the amount differs from what a blog told you — both can be correct.

Registering a birth years later

Adults who were never registered as children can still register. Expect the ward to ask for supporting evidence — school records, immunisation card, parents' citizenship, and often a sarjamin muchulka (a ward-level attestation by neighbours) or a police report. One legal limit worth knowing: events that occurred before the Births, Deaths and Other Personal Events (Registration) Act, 2033 came into force cannot be registered. In those cases the ward chairperson can issue an attestation of the event instead.

7. Special cases: single mothers, births abroad, adoption, foreign parents

This is where competing articles fall silent, and it is where most real difficulty lives. The following are the Department's stated positions:

SituationHow the registration is done
Single mother, father not establishedThe child is registered under the mother's surname and permanent address as they stood at the time of birth. No father's details are required.
Mother married after the child was bornIf the child lives with the mother, the mother's address is used; if the child lives at the maternal home, that address is used.
Father's whereabouts unknownRegistration proceeds on the basis of a police report plus the other required documents.
After divorce, child with motherCan be registered at the mother's permanent address — provided it is confirmed the birth was not already registered at the father's address.
Child born abroad to Nepali parentsGet the foreign birth certificate authenticated by the Nepali diplomatic mission in that country, then register at your permanent-address ward within 35 days of arriving in Nepal. Certain Nepali missions also accept birth registration directly, including through the online portal.
Mother is a foreign national, father NepaliRegistered on the father's Nepali citizenship with proof of the mother's foreign nationality, father as informant. If the marriage is registered or the mother also holds citizenship, the mother may be the informant.
Father is a foreign nationalRegistered at the place the birth occurred, with either parent as informant, along with proof of the father's foreign nationality.
Foreign nationals living in NepalMay register events occurring in Nepal at their place of residence using a passport or nationality document; if their country has a diplomatic mission in Nepal, that mission's recommendation is also needed.
Adopted child (धर्मपुत्र / धर्मपुत्री)The adoptive parent registers as informant, attaching a copy of the court decision. If both adoptive parents are named, both must be present.
Orphaned or helpless childA legal guardian acts as informant; if there is none, the ward chairperson becomes the informant.
Child born to a woman in prisonThe mother fills the information form, the prison chief certifies it, and it is forwarded to the local registrar's office for registration.
Dalit child, different surname from parentsPermitted — the surname must be one listed within the relevant Dalit community in the schedule published by the National Dalit Commission.

8. Seven mistakes that send people back to the ward office twice

  1. Letting the token expire. Thirty days, then the application is gone. Apply on a day you can also visit the ward that week.
  2. Spelling the name differently from the citizenship certificate. Even one matra difference in Nepali gets the form bounced. Type with the citizenship open in front of you.
  3. Entering the date in AD instead of BS. The form expects Bikram Sambat. Convert carefully — a wrong BS date on a birth certificate follows the child for life.
  4. Using someone else's mobile number. The token SMS goes there, and so does everything after it.
  5. Choosing the wrong ward. It must be the ward of the permanent address or the ward where the birth happened. Picking "wherever is convenient" means starting over.
  6. Sending a relative without the informant. The informant — parent, or a family member aged 18+ in their absence — has to be physically present with their citizenship.
  7. Collecting the certificate without reading it. Check every field at the counter before you walk away. It is the informant's stated duty to verify the details on the certificate before accepting it — and it is vastly easier to fix a typo at the counter than to file a correction later.

From doing this in Kathmandu: the smoothest run I have seen went like this — the online form was filled at about 9 pm from a laptop, the token SMS arrived within a minute, and the ward office was reached at 10:30 the next morning with the hospital birth report, both parents' citizenship originals and photocopies, and the token screenshot. Total time at the counter: under 25 minutes, certificate in hand the same day, zero rupees paid. The one thing that genuinely made the difference was carrying photocopies as well as originals — the ward keeps copies for its file, and the nearest photocopy shop is never inside the building. The case that went badly was an aunt trying to register a nephew while both parents were at work: turned away at the counter, correctly, because she was not the informant on the form.

9. How to correct a mistake on an issued birth certificate

Corrections are possible and routine. The legal basis is Rule 23(1) of the National ID and Civil Registration Rules, 2077, with the application made in the format of Schedule 26.

  • Where: the ward office that issued the certificate — the office holding the original record.
  • What to bring: the original certificate, your evidence for the correct detail (citizenship, hospital record, school certificate), and the informant's citizenship.
  • What gets corrected: name and surname spelling, date of birth, parents' details, address errors.
  • Timing matters: corrections raised within the first year are generally handled at ward level as a straightforward amendment. Older records and substantive changes take longer and may need higher approval.
  • A calendar quirk worth knowing: if an event was registered against a date that does not exist in that Nepali month, the duplicate can be issued against the last day of that month.

One warning that is not decorative: submitting false details to obtain a registration certificate is a punishable offence under Section 41 of the Act. Correct an error; do not "improve" a date of birth.

Why your birth certificate matters more every year

Nepal is steadily wiring its civil registration record into everything else. Your janma darta record is the upstream document for the citizenship certificate, and increasingly for the National ID. As NID becomes mandatory across banking, telecom and government services, an unregistered or misspelled birth record stops being a paperwork nuisance and starts blocking access to services.

If you are working through Nepal's other online government services, these walkthroughs use the same approach as this guide: NID card check in Nepal, eNID download step-by-step, and applying for a driving licence online in Nepal.

Do this today if a baby was born in your family this month: fill the form at public.donidcr.gov.np tonight, save the token, and walk into the ward office this week with both parents' citizenship originals plus photocopies and the hospital birth report. Inside 35 days it costs nothing. After that, it costs money and paperwork — forever.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a birth certificate in Nepal completely online without visiting the ward office?

No. You can complete the application form online at public.donidcr.gov.np and receive a token by SMS, but the informant must appear at the ward office with original documents for verification, and the certificate is printed, signed and issued there.

What is the login for janma darta online registration?

There is no citizen login for birth registration. public.donidcr.gov.np is an open form — you submit and receive a token. The login page at online.donidcr.gov.np belongs to ward and municipality staff, and citizenportal.donidcr.gov.np is for National ID services, not birth registration.

How long is the online birth registration token valid?

Multiple municipalities state the token must be used at the ward office within 30 days. After that it expires and you must submit a fresh online application.

Is the parents' marriage certificate required for birth registration in Nepal?

No. The Department of National ID and Civil Registration states that a marriage registration certificate is not mandatory for registering a child's birth. Bring it if you have it, but its absence does not block registration.

How much does birth registration cost in Nepal?

It is free if done within 35 days of the birth. After 35 days a late fee applies, set by each local level — published examples range from about Rs. 50 to Rs. 500. Confirm the exact amount with your own ward office.

Can I register a birth after many years?

Yes. Late registration is always permitted with the late fee and supporting evidence such as school records, an immunisation card and often a ward sarjamin muchulka. The only hard limit is that events occurring before the 2033 Act came into force cannot be registered; a ward-level attestation is issued instead.

Can a single mother register her child's birth in Nepal?

Yes. Where paternity is not established, the child is registered using the mother's surname and her permanent address as at the time of birth, with the mother as informant.

How do I register a child born abroad?

Have the foreign birth certificate authenticated by the Nepali diplomatic mission in that country, then register at the ward office of your permanent address within 35 days of arriving in Nepal. Some Nepali missions also register births directly, including through the online portal.

I lost my birth certificate. Can I get a copy?

Yes. Apply for a duplicate (pratilipi) at the ward office holding the record. Where the record itself is missing or destroyed, the office can reconstruct it from the original information form or certificate held elsewhere, or by having the informant re-file and attest a fresh information form.

Will birth certificates be available on the Nagarik App?

Integration of civil registration data — including birth and marriage certificates — into the Nagarik App was confirmed as underway in 2026. It is not yet a substitute for the physical certificate, so register through your ward office in the meantime.

Who can be the informant (सूचक) for a birth registration?

The father or mother. In their absence, a family member aged 18 or above. For orphaned children, a legal guardian or, failing that, the ward chairperson.

Where do I complain if my ward office refuses or delays registration?

The Department of National ID and Civil Registration operates a toll-free helpline on 1147 and a grievance channel at gunaso@donidcr.gov.np. Local levels have a stated duty to register events, maintain records and issue certificates, and to inform citizens about the process and late fees.

  1. Stir-frying: A quick and easy method, stir-fry asparagus with garlic and ginger for a flavorful side dish.
  1. Roasting: Roast at 400°F (200°C) for 10-15 minutes, allowing the asparagus to caramelize and develop a deeper flavor.
