PayPal in Nepal (2026): Does It Work, What You Can and Can’t Do & the Best Alternatives
Updated 1 November 2026 (15 Kartik 2083) · By Wilson Shrestha · About 12 minutes to read
Every few months a post goes viral saying PayPal is "finally launching in Nepal next week". Then nothing happens, and thousands of freelancers, students and small sellers go back to asking the same question: does PayPal actually work in Nepal or not?
This guide gives you the honest, dated answer. We checked what a Nepal-registered PayPal account can really do, what Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) and the 2083/84 policy changed this year, which shortcuts put your money at risk, and which legal alternatives do PayPal’s job today, with the rupees you actually keep.
Quick answer
PayPal works in Nepal only half way. You can open a PayPal account with your Nepali address, add a dollar card, and use it to pay foreign websites and send money. You cannot receive client payments, request money, accept PayPal on a Nepali business, or withdraw a balance to a Nepali bank.
As of 1 November 2026, PayPal has not announced a full Nepal launch. The best alternatives today are Khalti by IME’s Stripe payment link for direct clients, Payoneer or Upwork Direct to Local Bank for marketplaces, and a SWIFT wire to your own USD account for large payments.

Does PayPal work in Nepal?
Yes and no, and the difference matters. Nepal appears on PayPal’s worldwide list of countries, and PayPal runs a Nepal site at paypal.com/np. The service there is provided by PayPal Pte. Ltd., its Singapore company. But the Nepal site offers only two things in its menu: send payments and pay securely. There is no "request money", no "accept payments", no invoicing and no business section, all of which you will find on the site for India, for example.
So the honest one-line answer is: PayPal in Nepal is a spending wallet, not a receiving one. If you only need to pay a foreign shop or subscription that accepts PayPal, it works. If you want clients, platforms or relatives to pay you through PayPal, it does not.
What a Nepal PayPal account can and can’t do
| Task | Works from Nepal? | What actually happens |
|---|---|---|
| Open a personal account | ✓ Yes | Sign up on paypal.com/np with your real name, Nepali address and phone number. |
| Pay on foreign websites | ✓ Yes | Works once you add a card that can pay in foreign currency, in practice a bank-issued dollar card. |
| Send money to another PayPal user | ✓ Yes | Funded from your linked card, within your card’s limit. |
| Link a normal NPR debit card | ⚠ Usually no | Rupee debit cards are not enabled for foreign online payments, so they are declined. |
| Link a Nepali bank account | ✗ No | No Nepali bank is integrated with PayPal for linking or payouts. |
| Receive client or freelance payments | ✗ No | The Nepal site offers no receive or request feature. |
| Withdraw a balance to Nepal | ✗ No | There is no withdrawal route to Nepali banks or wallets. |
| Accept PayPal on a Nepali website or shop | ✗ No | No business or merchant account is offered for Nepal. |
Status checked against PayPal’s public Nepal pages and Nepali fintech reporting as of 1 November 2026. What your own account shows after login is the final word for your account.
Why PayPal can’t pay you in Nepal
It is not one rule, and it is not only NRB’s fault or only PayPal’s. Three things are missing at the same time.

No licensed Nepali settlement partner
✗
Your Nepali bank (NPR)
Compare: Khalti by IME, Payoneer and Upwork each have a licensed route that ends at a Nepali bank or wallet.
1. No local partner
For dollars to land in a Nepali account, PayPal needs a bank or payment company licensed by NRB to settle with. That partnership has never been signed.
2. Strict foreign exchange rules
Every foreign currency inflow and outflow in Nepal must pass through licensed channels with purpose codes, KYC and tax records. A global wallet holding Nepalis’ dollars offshore does not fit that model yet.
3. PayPal’s own business case
PayPal weighs market size, fraud risk and compliance cost before opening receiving in any country. Even with Nepal’s door opening, it has to decide the market is worth it.
Is PayPal coming to Nepal? The real timeline
There has been real movement, but none of it is a PayPal launch. Here is what actually happened, in order, so you can tell news from rumour.
DECEMBER 2020
NRB approves prepaid dollar cards for paying foreign goods and services online, the first legal way for ordinary Nepalis to fund a PayPal purchase.
2024
NRB Deputy Governor Bam Bahadur Mishra confirms the central bank has tried to contact PayPal and asked Fonepay and Standard Chartered Bank Nepal to approach it. No agreement follows.
APRIL 2026
Khalti by IME launches a Stripe-powered payment link so Nepalis can receive international payments straight into their wallet in NPR. NRB also lets freelancers who earn foreign currency spend far more on professional software through banking channels.
MAY 2026
The government’s policy and programme for FY 2083/84, read by President Ram Chandra Poudel, promises legal recognition for international payment gateways. It is a policy statement; PayPal, Stripe and others have made no launch announcement.
OCTOBER 2026
NRB allows foreign currency earned from online service exports to be credited directly to the earner’s foreign currency card, with any balance above US$10,000 moved to an account.
TODAY, 1 NOVEMBER 2026
No official PayPal launch date. PayPal’s Nepal site still shows send and pay only.
Our take
Several blogs still quote a "mid-2026 to early-2027" launch window. That date was always a guess, and mid-2026 has passed. Plan your income as if PayPal will not arrive soon. If it does, you lose nothing by having a working Khalti, Payoneer or bank route already set up. Treat any "PayPal launching next week" post as a rumour until PayPal or NRB says so on its own channels.
Workarounds that cost people money
Search "PayPal in Nepal" and you will find pages selling "verified accounts", VPN tips and Telegram contacts. Here is why each shortcut is a bad bet.
| Workaround | What goes wrong | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Signing up with a foreign address or VPN | PayPal’s user agreement treats false information as a restricted activity. Accounts flagged for it can be limited and the balance held, often for months. | High |
| Buying a "verified" PayPal account | The account legally belongs to someone else. They or PayPal can freeze it at any time, and your clients’ money goes with it. | Very high |
| Using a relative’s PayPal abroad | Their account, their income on paper. Getting it to you then needs a remittance in their name, and any informal leg breaks foreign exchange rules. | Medium |
| "PayPal loaders" or exchangers | You send dollars to a stranger and hope rupees come back. This is informal hundi, it is illegal, and there is no protection if they vanish. | Very high |
There is a quieter cost too. Money that arrives through these routes leaves no bank record. You cannot show it for a visa, a home loan, a higher dollar card limit or the 5% freelancer tax, which only works when the foreign currency comes in through a licensed channel. Our freelance tax guide explains why that record matters.
Best PayPal alternatives in Nepal, compared
You do not need PayPal to get paid in Nepal any more. Each of these does one of PayPal’s jobs legally, and the money reaches a Nepali bank or wallet.
| Alternative | Replaces PayPal for | Main cost | Speed | Lands as |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khalti by IME (Stripe link) | "Send me a PayPal invoice": direct clients, creators, small sellers | 2% fee; 5% tax deducted against your PAN | Instant | NPR in wallet |
| Payoneer | Marketplace payouts (Fiverr, Amazon) and US/EU clients who want local bank details | About 1% on client payments; up to about 2% conversion to NPR | 1–3 business days | NPR (or USD wire) |
| Upwork Direct to Local Bank | Upwork earnings | $0.99 per withdrawal plus exchange margin | Up to 4 business days | NPR |
| SWIFT wire to your USD account | Retainers, salaries and invoices above about $3,000 | Flat: intermediary fees plus a small receiving charge | 2–7 business days | USD |
| Client sends with Wise | Clients or family who already use Wise | Paid by the sender; near mid-market rate | Minutes to 2 days | NPR |
| Dollar (foreign currency) card | Paying foreign sites, with or without PayPal | Bank issue and annual fees; bank selling rate | Instant at checkout | Spends USD |
Chart: rupees lost on a $1,000 payment, before tax
Shorter bar = more money kept. NRB USD buying rate Rs 151.61 (25 Oct 2026), so $1,000 is worth Rs 1,51,610.
Upwork Direct to Local Bank (estimate): Rs 2,420 lost
Khalti by IME (Stripe link): Rs 3,032 lost
Payoneer, direct client: Rs 4,518 lost
SWIFT wire to USD account: Rs 4,790 lost
PayPal to a Nepali bank: not possible
Two things stand out. First, on a $1,000 payment the legal routes cost you between about Rs 2,400 and Rs 4,800, roughly 1.6% to 3.2%. That is less than many people lose paying a "loader" to cash out a PayPal balance. Second, SWIFT’s cost is mostly flat, so it is the worst choice at $1,000 but the cheapest above about $3,000.
After the 5% tax, $1,000 through Khalti leaves about Rs 1,41,150 in your wallet. The full method-by-method maths, including the $5,000 case, is in our freelance payments to Nepal guide, and Payoneer’s fees and setup are covered step by step in Payoneer Nepal.
What about Stripe in Nepal?
You still cannot open your own Stripe account as a Nepal-based person or company; Nepal is not on Stripe’s supported list for standard accounts. What you can use is Stripe’s checkout through Khalti: you create the payment request in the Khalti app, your client pays on a Stripe page with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the money reaches your Khalti wallet in rupees. The client does not need a Stripe account. Khalti’s FAQ says the service is inward only, so you cannot use it to send money abroad.
Which PayPal alternative fits you?
Freelancer with direct clients
Send a Khalti by IME payment link. It feels like a PayPal invoice to the client and you get rupees instantly, with tax handled.
Upwork or Fiverr seller
Upwork: Direct to Local Bank. Fiverr: Payoneer. You never needed PayPal for either.
Monthly retainer or remote salary
SWIFT wire into your own USD account. Flat fees, automatic 5% tax and the strongest income record.
YouTuber or creator
Platform payouts usually go by bank wire; sponsors and fans can pay a Khalti link. Keep every payment on record.
Student or shopper paying abroad
Get a dollar card. Use PayPal on top of it only when a site takes PayPal and not cards.
Small online shop selling abroad
Use Khalti payment links per order, or ask your bank about an international card-acceptance gateway for your website.
How to use PayPal to pay from Nepal, step by step
If a site you need only takes PayPal, this is the legal way to do it.
- Get a dollar card first. Apply at your bank with your citizenship, PAN and an active account. Ordinary users usually get about $500 a year; freelancers who show foreign income can qualify for far higher limits under NRB’s 2026 changes. Our dollar card guide compares banks and fees.
- Sign up on paypal.com/np with your real name exactly as on your card, your Nepali address and mobile number. Do not use a foreign address.
- Add the dollar card under Wallet. PayPal may place a small temporary charge to confirm the card.
- Pay in USD where you can. PayPal’s fee page for Nepal says buying is free unless a currency conversion is involved. With a USD card, a USD checkout avoids PayPal’s conversion margin; a EUR or GBP price will trigger it.
- Watch your annual limit. Every PayPal payment comes out of your dollar card limit, the same as a direct card payment.
Example: a $20 monthly subscription
Your bank loads the card at its USD selling rate. At around Rs 152 per dollar, a $20 plan costs about Rs 3,040 a month before your bank’s card fees. Paid in USD through PayPal, there is no PayPal fee on top. If the same plan were billed in euros, PayPal’s conversion margin would be added.
Most subscriptions accept the card directly, which is simpler. See how to pay online from Nepal and real examples like paying for Canva Pro.
When a client insists on PayPal
This is where most Nepali freelancers lose a deal or take a risky shortcut. Usually the client does not care about PayPal itself; they want to pay by card, quickly, with a receipt. A Khalti payment link gives them exactly that. You can copy and adapt this message:
Hi [Name], thanks for confirming. PayPal does not support receiving payments for accounts in Nepal, so I invoice through a secure Stripe checkout instead. You can pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, with no account needed, and you will get an email receipt.
Here is the payment link for invoice #[number]: [link]
If your company prefers a bank transfer, I can send my USD account and SWIFT details instead.
If a client still cannot pay without PayPal, it is usually a sign to route the work through a marketplace like Upwork, where the client pays the platform and you withdraw legally to Nepal.
Family abroad: can they PayPal you money?
No. A relative in the USA, UK or Australia can send PayPal to another PayPal user, but your Nepal account cannot receive it or cash it out. Even PayPal-owned Xoom is a separate service from your PayPal wallet.
For family money, a licensed remittance service or Wise to your Nepali bank is cheaper and lands in rupees within minutes to a day. Our send money to Nepal guide compares the options by country, for example from the USA, and you can check the day’s rate on USD to NPR today. Remember that family remittance and freelance income are treated differently for tax.
Frequently asked questions
Does PayPal work in Nepal in 2026?
Partly. You can open a PayPal account in Nepal and use it to pay foreign websites and send money with a linked dollar card. You cannot receive payments, request money or withdraw a balance to a Nepali bank.
Can I receive money on PayPal in Nepal?
No. PayPal’s Nepal service offers no receive or request feature, and there is no withdrawal route to Nepali banks. Use a Khalti by IME payment link, Payoneer, Upwork’s local bank option or a bank wire instead.
Is PayPal legal in Nepal?
Opening a PayPal account with your real details and paying with a bank-issued dollar card is legal. Using a fake foreign address, a bought account or an informal "loader" to bring PayPal money into Nepal breaks PayPal’s terms or Nepal’s foreign exchange rules, or both.
When will PayPal fully launch in Nepal?
No date has been announced. NRB has tried to bring PayPal in through Fonepay and Standard Chartered, and the FY 2083/84 policy promises legal recognition for international payment gateways, but as of 1 November 2026 PayPal has made no launch announcement.
Can I link my Nepali bank account or debit card to PayPal?
You cannot link a Nepali bank account. A normal rupee debit card is usually declined because it is not enabled for foreign online payments. A bank-issued dollar card is the card meant for this.
What is the best PayPal alternative in Nepal?
For direct clients, Khalti by IME’s Stripe payment link is the closest to PayPal: the client pays by card, you get NPR instantly, for a 2% fee. For Upwork, use Direct to Local Bank; for Fiverr, Payoneer; for large retainers, a SWIFT wire to your USD account.
Is Stripe available in Nepal?
Not as your own Stripe account. Since April 2026 you can use Stripe’s checkout through the Khalti by IME app to receive international payments into your Khalti wallet in NPR.
Should I buy a verified PayPal account?
No. The account belongs to someone else, it breaks PayPal’s terms, and it can be frozen with your money inside at any time. It also leaves you no legal way to bring the money into Nepal or prove the income.
Bottom line
PayPal in Nepal is useful for one job: paying foreign sites with your dollar card. For getting paid, stop waiting for it. A Khalti payment link, Payoneer, Upwork’s local bank option or a USD wire already do what PayPal would, legally, with a record that helps your taxes, visas and loans. When PayPal does open receiving in Nepal, we will update this page.
