Freelance payment from Upwork and Fiverr arriving in a Nepali bank account

Freelance Payments to Nepal (2026): 7 Legal Ways to Get Paid, Real Fees and the 5% Tax

Updated 26 October 2026 · By Wilson Shrestha · About 14 minutes to read

Getting the work is the easy part. Getting paid for it in Nepal is where most freelancers lose money, time and sleep. PayPal still does not work for Nepal-based accounts, platform fees stack up quietly, and the 5% freelancer tax only works the way people think it works if the money arrives in the right form.

This guide covers every legal way freelance payments reach Nepal in 2026, including the new Khalti by IME and Stripe route launched in April and Nepal Rastra Bank’s October 2026 rule change for foreign currency cards. You will see what $1,000 and $5,000 really land as in rupees, which route wins at which amount, and the tax trap that catches people who withdraw in NPR.

Quick answer

The legal ways to receive freelance payments in Nepal are Payoneer (withdraw to a Nepali bank), Upwork Direct to Local Bank in NPR, Fiverr via Payoneer, Khalti by IME’s Stripe payment link (2% fee, credited instantly in NPR), a SWIFT wire into your own USD account at a Nepali bank, a client-side Wise transfer in NPR, and, since October 2026, crediting service-export earnings straight to a foreign currency card.

For payments under about $3,000, Khalti or Upwork’s local bank option usually leave you the most rupees. Above that, a SWIFT wire into a USD account wins because its fees are flat. Income received in foreign currency through a bank by an individual not running a registered business is taxed at a flat 5%, withheld by the bank.

What changed for freelance payments in 2026

Most guides on this topic were written before this year’s changes. Four things are different now, and each one affects how much you keep.

APRIL 2026

Khalti by IME opens a Stripe payment link

KYC-verified Khalti users can send an international client a payment link. The client pays by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or bank transfer through Stripe, and the money reaches your wallet in NPR within moments. No foreign account or SWIFT code is needed.

MAY 2026

Budget 2083/84 targets IT exports

The budget gives a 50% income tax exemption on IT service export income (down from the 75% rebate of 2082/83) and promises a legal framework for people in Nepal working remotely for foreign employers. The exemption is aimed at registered exporters; the individual 5% route stays separate.

OCTOBER 2026

Export earnings can go straight to your dollar card

Nepal Rastra Bank now lets foreign currency earned from the online export of services be credited directly to the earner’s foreign currency card. If the card balance passes $10,000 (the old ceiling was $5,000), the excess must move to your NPR or foreign currency account.

STILL TRUE

PayPal still can’t receive in Nepal

There has been talk of a launch for years, but a Nepal-based PayPal account still cannot receive client payments. Anyone offering to “load” your PayPal balance into rupees is running an informal channel with no protection.

How freelance money actually travels to Nepal

Every legal route follows the same basic shape: the client pays a platform or processor abroad, that processor hands the money to a licensed bank or payment provider in Nepal, and the money is converted to rupees either before it arrives or after it lands in your USD account. Where the conversion happens decides who sets the exchange rate and whether the 5% tax is withheld automatically.

Diagram: the three payment lanes into Nepal

Lane 1: Converted abroad, arrives in NPR

Client / Upwork / Fiverr
→
Payoneer, Upwork DLB or Wise converts USD

NPR lands in your savings account

Lane 2: Arrives in USD, converted by your bank

→

Lane 3: Wallet route

The lane matters for tax. In Lane 2 your bank sees foreign currency arriving and withholds the 5% automatically. In Lane 1 the bank sees rupees, so it may treat the money like any other NPR credit. We cover what that means for you in the tax section.

Routes to avoid

  • Hundi or “PayPal loaders”: someone abroad takes your dollars and an agent pays you rupees. It is illegal, unprotected, and leaves you with no income record for visas, loans or tax clearance.
  • Crypto payouts: Nepal Rastra Bank does not recognise cryptocurrency, and the draft foreign exchange bill explicitly bars using unrecognised virtual currencies.
  • A foreign bank account opened on your own: residents of Nepal need Nepal Rastra Bank approval before opening an account with a foreign bank.

What $1,000 and $5,000 really land as in rupees

Headline fees look small, but conversion margins do most of the damage. To compare fairly, we took a client payment of $1,000 and $5,000 (after any platform commission), valued it at the Nepal Rastra Bank USD buying rate of Rs 151.61 on 25 October 2026, and worked out what each route leaves in your account before tax.

Chart: rupees lost to fees and exchange margins

Shorter bar = more money kept. Values are the gap between the NRB rate value and what lands in your account.

On a $1,000 payment (NRB value Rs 1,51,610)

Upwork Direct to Local Bank (estimate): Rs 2,420

Khalti by IME (Stripe): Rs 3,032

Payoneer, direct client: Rs 4,518

On a $5,000 payment (NRB value Rs 7,58,050)

What the numbers tell you

  • Percentage fees (Khalti, Payoneer) are cheap on small invoices and expensive on big ones.
  • SWIFT’s cost is mostly flat, so it is the worst choice at $1,000 and the best at $5,000. The crossover sits around $2,500 to $3,000.
  • After the 5% tax, $1,000 through Khalti leaves about Rs 1,41,150, and through Payoneer about Rs 1,39,740.
  • Banks convert at their own buying rate, which can sit slightly under the NRB rate. Check the day’s figure on our USD to NPR rate today page before you convert.

Each method, step by step

1. Payoneer to your Nepali bank

Payoneer is still the default for Nepali freelancers because it plugs into Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon and most other marketplaces, and gives you US, UK and EU receiving account details so direct clients can pay you as if you were local. Withdrawal to Nepali banks has been supported since 2020, so the money reaches your normal savings account.

  1. Sign up with your name exactly as it appears on your citizenship and bank account, and complete identity verification.
  2. Add your Nepali bank under Banks and cards, using your bank’s SWIFT code and full account number.
  3. Connect Payoneer inside Upwork (Settings, Get Paid) or Fiverr (Earnings, Withdrawal).
  4. Withdraw. Payoneer shows the estimated NPR amount before you confirm.

Watch out for: the $29.95 annual account fee, which Payoneer charges when your 12-month receipts fall below its activity threshold, and the conversion margin of up to about 2% when you withdraw USD as NPR.

2. Upwork Direct to Local Bank (NPR)

Upwork lists Nepal (NPR) as a Direct to Local Bank currency. It costs $0.99 per withdrawal, and Upwork says the money should arrive within four business days. A new withdrawal method activates three days after you add it, and the name on the bank account must match your verified Upwork name.

For freelancers who earn only on Upwork, this is often the cheapest route because it skips Payoneer’s percentage entirely. Payoneer withdrawals from Upwork cost $2, and a wire transfer costs $30, which only makes sense on large balances.

3. Fiverr via Payoneer

Fiverr pays Nepali sellers through Payoneer. You have two bank options:

  • Bank Transfer in local currency: $3 per withdrawal, one to three business days, NPR conversion applied.
  • Bank Transfer as a USD wire: $1 per withdrawal, five to seven business days, arrives as dollars, which suits a USD account.

The minimum is $20 for either, and after changing a withdrawal method you must wait 24 hours. Remember that Fiverr keeps a 20% commission before any of this, so price your gigs with that in mind.

4. Khalti by IME with Stripe (new in 2026)

This is the biggest change for direct-client freelancers in years. You create a payment request inside the Khalti app and share the link. Your client pays through Stripe’s checkout with a card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACH or SEPA, and does not need a Stripe account or a registered business.

  1. Update the Khalti by IME app and make sure your account is fully KYC-verified.
  2. Complete the separate International Payment KYC, which Nepal Rastra Bank requires.
  3. Create a Payment Request with the amount, and send the link to your client.
  4. Once the client pays, the NPR amount lands in your wallet. Move it to your linked bank account when you need it.

Cost: Khalti’s own FAQ shows a 2% service fee, so a $1,000 request becomes $980 before conversion, and it says taxes are handled automatically. Because it is a percentage, it gets expensive on very large invoices, and wallet limits may cap how much you can hold, so check the limits shown in your app before sending a large request.

5. SWIFT wire into your USD account

For monthly retainers, remote contracts and anything above about $3,000, ask the client to wire dollars directly to a USD account at your Nepali bank. You give them your account name, account number, branch, and the bank’s SWIFT code.

  • Ask the client to choose “OUR” charges if they agree to cover the sending fee; otherwise intermediary banks deduct $15 to $50 on the way.
  • Your bank withholds the 5% tax as the dollars arrive and gives you a clean inward-remittance record.
  • You decide when to convert, so you can hold dollars to pay for software, hosting or ads.

6. Your client sends through Wise

You cannot hold a Wise balance or get a Wise card as a Nepal resident, but your client can use Wise to send rupees to your Nepali bank account. Wise’s own help page sets the limits at Rs 10 lakh per transfer and Rs 20 lakh per day per recipient, and it cannot pay NPR to business accounts in Nepal.

The exchange rate is close to mid-market and the client pays the fee, so it is excellent value. The catch is tax: the money arrives as ordinary NPR, so read the next section before you rely on it.

7. Crediting earnings to a foreign currency card

Since Nepal Rastra Bank’s October 2026 revision, foreign currency you earn by exporting services online can be credited straight onto your foreign currency card, and moved to your NPR or USD account on request. The card balance can now run up to $10,000 before the excess has to be swept to an account.

This matters most if you spend in dollars: design tools, AI subscriptions, hosting and ad credits. Your earnings stay in USD instead of being converted to rupees and then bought back as dollars at a worse rate. Our dollar card guide lists the banks, fees and limits, and how to pay online from Nepal covers the checkout side.

The 5% freelancer tax, and the NPR trap nobody explains

Section 95Ka of the Income Tax Act sets a special rate for a resident individual not running a business who earns foreign currency by providing software or similar electronic services abroad, consulting services abroad, or by uploading audio-visual content to social networks. It began at 1% under the Finance Act 2078 and rose to 5% under the Finance Act 2080.

How the 5% works

  • Your bank, financial institution or money transfer company withholds it when the foreign currency is paid to you.
  • It is a final tax. You do not pay slab rates on top.
  • If this is your only income, you are not required to file a return.
  • Tax experts note that above Rs 40 lakh a year you must file a return, but owe nothing extra.

When it does not apply

  • You earn under a business PAN or registered firm. You then file normally and pay tax on profit.
  • The work is not in the listed categories.
  • The client is in Nepal and pays in rupees. That income follows the normal slabs.
  • The money reaches you as ordinary NPR and no one withheld the 5% (see below).

The NPR trap

The 5% is collected by the bank at the moment it pays out foreign currency. When your money is converted abroad and lands as rupees, through some Payoneer withdrawals, Upwork’s local bank option or a Wise transfer, your bank may simply see an NPR credit and withhold nothing. Freelancers report both outcomes: some banks deduct 5% on these credits, others do not.

If nothing is withheld, the income has not been taxed, and you cannot pay the 5% yourself through the taxpayer portal. The safe options are:

  • Receive in USD through a wire or the Payoneer USD option into a USD account, so the bank applies the 5% automatically.
  • Use Khalti’s route, where tax is handled in the app.
  • Otherwise, file a return with your personal PAN and pay at the normal slab rates. The 2083/84 slabs start at 1% on the first Rs 10 lakh; our payroll guide has the full table.

Whatever route you use, a clean record is worth more than the fee you save. A visa officer, a home-loan banker or the tax office will all ask for proof of foreign income, and a bank inward-remittance trail with 5% withheld is the strongest proof you can have. If you have not registered yet, you can check your PAN number online first.

Opening a USD account as a freelancer

Contrary to what some foreign guides say, Nepal Rastra Bank does allow resident individuals who earn in foreign currency, including freelancers and IT exporters, to open a foreign currency account. Each bank sets its own paperwork, but expect to bring:

  • Citizenship certificate or national ID, and a recent photo
  • Your personal (not business) PAN
  • Proof of foreign income: a contract with the client company, or a platform earnings certificate such as Upwork’s Certificate of Earnings
  • For remote contracts, a document showing your name, ID number, that the work is done from Nepal, the client company’s details, the USD amount and the contract period

Ask your branch whether the account can receive platform payouts (Payoneer USD and Fiverr USD wire) as well as client wires, and ask which code they will use for freelance inflows so the 5% is applied correctly.

Which route is right for you?

You earn only on Upwork

Use Direct to Local Bank for routine withdrawals. Switch to a $30 wire into a USD account only when your balance is large.

You sell on Fiverr

Payoneer is required. Pick the $1 USD wire if you have a USD account; otherwise the $3 local transfer.

Direct clients, invoices under $3,000

Send a Khalti by IME payment link. Clients pay by card in a familiar checkout and you get rupees instantly.

Retainers or salary above $3,000

SWIFT wire into a USD account. Flat fees, automatic 5% tax and a strong income record.

You spend in dollars every month

Keep earnings in USD on your foreign currency card or account instead of converting twice.

Your client already uses Wise

Great rate, but plan your tax filing, because nothing may be withheld on NPR arrivals.

Example: a Lalitpur designer with three income streams

Imagine a designer earning $600 a month on Fiverr, $1,200 from a UK agency and $2,500 a month on retainer for a US startup.

  • Fiverr pays through Payoneer as a $1 USD wire into her USD account.
  • The UK agency pays each invoice through a Khalti by IME link; at 2% she keeps about $1,176 before tax.
  • The US startup wires $2,500 to her USD account with “OUR” charges. Her bank withholds 5%, and she keeps some dollars on her card for Adobe and hosting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to receive freelance payments in Nepal?

It depends on the amount and platform. Upwork-only freelancers usually do best with Direct to Local Bank, direct clients paying under about $3,000 do well with a Khalti by IME payment link at a 2% fee, and larger retainers are cheapest as a SWIFT wire into a USD account.

Can I receive PayPal payments in Nepal in 2026?

No. A Nepal-based PayPal account still cannot receive client payments. Ask clients to pay through Payoneer, a Khalti payment link, Wise or a bank wire instead.

How much tax do freelancers pay on foreign income in Nepal?

A resident individual not running a registered business pays a flat 5% on foreign-currency income from software and electronic services, consulting abroad or social media content. The bank withholds it and it is final. With a business PAN, normal tax on profit applies instead.

Does Khalti charge a fee for international payments?

Yes. Khalti by IME’s FAQ shows a 2% service fee on Stripe payment requests, so a $1,000 request becomes $980 before conversion to NPR. Khalti says taxes on these payments are handled automatically.

Can a freelancer in Nepal open a dollar account?

Yes. Residents who earn foreign currency, including freelancers, can open a foreign currency account with proof of foreign income such as a client contract or a platform earnings certificate. Each bank sets its own document list.

Can Nepal residents use Wise to get paid?

Not with their own Wise balance or card. Your client can, however, use Wise to send NPR to your Nepali bank account, up to Rs 10 lakh per transfer and Rs 20 lakh per day.

Can I keep freelance earnings on my dollar card?

Yes, since October 2026. Nepal Rastra Bank allows foreign currency from the online export of services to be credited directly to your foreign currency card. Any balance above $10,000 must move to your NPR or foreign currency account.

Do I need to file a tax return as a freelancer?

Not if your only income is foreign-currency freelance income on which the bank withheld 5%. You must file if that income goes above Rs 40 lakh a year, if you have other income such as a salary or Nepali clients, or if your payments arrived as NPR without the 5% being withheld.

Sources and methodology

Fees and rules were checked in October 2026 against these sources. Worked examples use the NRB USD buying rate of Rs 151.61 (25 October 2026) and are estimates; your bank’s rate and charges will differ slightly.
