Send money from USA to Nepal guide showing USD to NPR transfer to bank account, wallet and cash pickup

Tihar is here, and for thousands of Nepalis in New York, Texas, Virginia and California that means one thing: sending money home. But if you want to send money from USA to Nepal in 2026, the rules have changed. Since 1 January 2026, the United States charges a 1% federal tax on cash-funded remittances, and the provider with the “best rate” is not always the one that delivers the most rupees.

Most pages ranking for this keyword are written by a single transfer company selling its own app. This guide compares the main options side by side, shows the real cost of a US$1,000 transfer, explains the new US remittance tax, US gift-tax limits and your legal right to cancel, and covers what your family needs on the Nepal side.

Quick answer

  • Cheapest: an online app (Remitly, Wise, Ria, Western Union and others) paid from your US bank account (ACH) and delivered to a Nepali bank account. Compare the final NPR received.
  • Fastest: app transfer to a bank account, wallet or cash pickup – often within minutes, depending on the provider.
  • Avoid the 1% tax: fund the transfer from a bank account or a US-issued debit or credit card, not cash or a money order.
  • Large amounts: above US$19,000 to one person in a year, you may need to file a US gift tax return (tax is rarely owed).
  • Never: hundi. It is illegal in Nepal and offers no protection.

5 Ways to Send Money from USA to Nepal

Every option is a combination of how you pay in the US and how your family receives in Nepal. Here is how the main routes compare for a typical family transfer.

MethodTypical costSpeed1% US tax?Best for
App, paid by bank (ACH)LowestMinutes to 1–3 daysNoRegular monthly support
App, paid by debit/credit cardLow to mediumOften minutesNo (US-issued card)Urgent transfers
Agent counter, paid in cashMediumMinutesYes, 1%Senders without a US bank account
Bank wire (SWIFT)Highest1–5 business daysNoProperty, business, very large sums
Money order / cashier’s checkMediumSlowYes, 1%Rarely the right choice now

1. Online money transfer apps (best for most people)

You sign up, verify your ID, add your family member as a recipient and pay from your bank account or card. This is the cheapest route for most Nepalis in the US because apps compete hard on the USD–NPR corridor and paying from a bank account keeps you outside the new 1% tax.

2. Agent counters (cash)

Walking into a Western Union, Ria or similar agent location still works and is useful if you do not have a US bank account. The downside since 2026 is the 1% federal excise tax on transfers you pay for with cash, which the provider collects at the counter.

3. Bank wire (SWIFT)

Your US bank sends money through SWIFT to a Nepali bank. It is reliable for large one-off payments, but you usually pay a sending fee, a weaker exchange rate and sometimes an intermediary bank charge. You will need the recipient bank’s code from our verified list of Nepal bank SWIFT codes.

4. Mobile wallet payout

Some providers can deliver straight to a KYC-verified Nepali wallet such as Khalti by IME or eSewa through licensed remittance partners. It is fast and convenient for families who pay bills digitally.

5. Cash pickup in Nepal

Your family collects cash at an agent or bank branch with ID and the reference number. It remains the best option for elderly parents and remote villages without a bank account.

Remitly vs Wise vs Western Union vs Ria: USA to Nepal Compared

These are the providers Nepali senders in the US use most. Details below come from each provider’s own US-to-Nepal page, checked in October 2026. Fees and rates change daily, so treat this as a shortlist, not a price list.

ProviderPayout in NepalPricing styleWorth knowing
RemitlyBank deposit, cash pickup, mobile money (partners include Nepal Bank and City Express)Fee varies by amount (different below and above $500), payment method and speedLimits depend on your verification level; first-transfer discounts
WiseLocal Nepali bank account only (no cash pickup)Mid-market rate plus a visible feeRecipient needs no Wise account; lower fees on transfers above US$25,000
Western UnionBank account and agent cash pickupFee plus exchange-rate marginUp to US$5,000 per transfer to Nepal; track with the MTCN
RiaBanks such as NIMB, Global IME, Nabil and Everest Bank; cash pickupFee plus exchange-rate marginSend online, by app or in person; delivery from minutes to five business days
InstaremBank accountFee and rate shown upfrontUS$1 to US$3,000 per transfer; usually minutes

CHOOSE REMITLY IF

You want bank, wallet and cash pickup options in one app and send $500 or more at a time.

CHOOSE WISE IF

You want the real exchange rate with every cost shown, and your family has a bank account.

CHOOSE AN AGENT IF

You have no US bank account. Budget for the 1% cash tax on top of the fee.

The 1% US Remittance Tax: What Nepali Senders Must Know

This is the biggest change for anyone sending money from the US in 2026, and most Nepal-focused guides still do not mention it. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act created a new 1% federal excise tax on remittance transfers (Internal Revenue Code Section 4475), effective for transfers on or after 1 January 2026.

The key point: the tax depends on how you pay, not who you are. There is no exemption for US citizens or green card holders, but there is a simple, fully legal way to avoid it.

How you fund the transfer1% tax applies?Tax on US$1,000
Cash at an agent counterYes$10
Money order or cashier’s checkYes$10
US bank account (ACH or wire)No$0
US-issued debit or credit cardNo$0

The provider collects the tax from you at the time of the transfer and pays it to the IRS. Treasury and the IRS published proposed regulations in April 2026 clarifying that cash, money orders, cashier’s checks and similar physical instruments trigger the tax, while bank-account and US-card funding are exempt.

A typical case

A restaurant worker in Queens sends US$500 home every month, paying cash at the same counter he has used for years. In 2026 that habit now costs US$5 a month in tax – US$60 a year – before any fee. Linking a debit card in the same provider’s app removes the tax completely, with no change on his family’s side in Nepal.

Credit card warning

A US credit card avoids the 1% tax, but some card issuers treat money transfers as a cash advance, which can bring an extra fee and immediate interest. Use a debit card or bank account unless you have confirmed your card’s terms.

Real Cost of Sending US$1,000 from USA to Nepal

Every transfer has up to three costs: the fee, the exchange-rate markup (the gap between the real rate and the rate you get) and, for cash, the 1% tax. The chart below shows how much your family would receive from a US$1,000 budget under different methods.

Total cost = Fee + Exchange-rate markup + 1% tax (cash only)

Compare the final NPR your family receives, not the fee alone

What your family receives from a US$1,000 budget

Illustration only. Reference rate Rs 151.64 (NRB buying rate, 19 Oct 2026). Provider fees and rates are hypothetical examples.

Reference (no fee, NRB rate): Rs 151,640

App + bank (ACH) ($0 fee, rate Rs 150.90): Rs 150,900

App + debit card ($3.99 fee, rate Rs 150.90): Rs 150,298

Agent + cash ($5 fee, $10 tax, rate Rs 150.00): Rs 147,750

Bank wire ($45 fee, $15 intermediary, rate Rs 147.10): Rs 138,274

The gap between the best and worst option is over Rs 12,600 on a single transfer. Sent monthly, that is more than Rs 1.5 lakh a year your family never sees.

What changes the price

  • Amount: some apps charge less per dollar on bigger transfers.
  • Payment method: bank account is usually cheapest; cards cost more; cash adds the 1% tax.
  • Delivery speed: “express” options often cost extra.
  • Payout: bank deposit is often cheaper than cash pickup.
  • Promotions: first-transfer rates are real but temporary.

How Your Family Receives the Money in Nepal

Most delays happen on the receiving side, so share this table with whoever collects the money.

Receive viaRecipient needsTip
Bank accountActive, KYC-updated account; name must match exactlyBest for larger amounts and remittance savings schemes
Mobile walletKYC-verified wallet on the number you enteredFast; check wallet receiving limits before large transfers
Cash pickupOriginal citizenship, national ID or passport plus the reference numberNever pay an agent an extra “service charge”

Sending to your own account in Nepal

Many Nepalis in the US send money to their own Nepali account to save, invest in NEPSE or pay loans. Long-term residents abroad can find banking and investing at home easier with an NRN card. Under NRB rules, banks also offer an extra 1% interest on savings and fixed deposits funded by formal remittance; compare current rates in our fixed deposit interest rate guide.

Limits, Gift Tax and Your Rights as a US Sender

Provider sending limits

Set by each company, not by law. Western Union lists up to US$5,000 per transfer to Nepal; Instarem lists US$1 to US$3,000; Remitly’s limits rise as you complete more verification.

US gift tax: US$19,000

In 2026 you can give up to US$19,000 per recipient (US$38,000 for a married couple splitting gifts) without filing. Above that, a gift tax return (Form 709) is due by 15 April the next year, but actual tax only applies after the US$15 million lifetime exemption.

Right to cancel and fix errors

Under the CFPB Remittance Transfer Rule you can usually cancel within 30 minutes of paying for a full refund (if not yet collected), and you have 180 days to report an error such as a missing transfer.

Nepal side: Rs 10 lakh reporting

Nepal does not tax normal family remittances, but banks report inward remittances of Rs 1 million or more to the Financial Intelligence Unit. It is routine; just keep records for large transfers.

Family support is a gift, not income, for the person sending it. If you send large or business amounts, or your situation is unusual, speak to a US tax professional.

USD to NPR Rate: Does Timing Matter?

Nepal Rastra Bank publishes the official USD reference rate every banking day. On 19 October 2026 it was Rs 151.64 buying and Rs 152.24 selling per US dollar. Between late May and early October 2026, the NRB selling rate moved between about Rs 151.22 and Rs 154.82.

NRB USD selling rate, 2026 range (Rs per US$1)

Low, 20 Jun 2026 – 151.22

19 Oct 2026 – 152.24

High, 24 Jul 2026 – 154.82

On a US$1,000 transfer, that range is worth about Rs 3,600. That is real money, but far less than the gap between a good app and a bank wire. Our advice: pick the right provider first, then worry about timing. If you send a large amount, some apps let you lock a rate for a short period, and rates during Dashain and Tihar promotions can be competitive.

Hundi from the US: Why It Is Not Worth It

In some US Nepali communities, a “friend of a friend” may offer a few rupees more per dollar. That is hundi, and it is illegal in Nepal.

Hundi

  • No receipt, no tracking, no refund
  • No CFPB cancellation or error rights
  • Cannot be used for remittance FD schemes or proof of funds

Licensed app

  • Regulated in the US and paid out through NRB-licensed partners
  • 30-minute cancellation and 180-day error rights
  • Builds a formal record for loans, visas and savings

7 Mistakes to Avoid When Sending Money from USA to Nepal

  1. Paying in cash out of habit. Since 2026 it costs an extra 1%.
  2. Choosing by “$0 fee” alone. Always compare the final NPR.
  3. Using a credit card blindly. Check for cash-advance charges.
  4. Name mismatches. “Sita Kumari” is not “Sita Kumari Thapa” to a bank.
  5. Sending to a dormant or non-KYC account. Funds can be held or returned.
  6. Using a bank wire for small, regular transfers. It is usually the most expensive route.
  7. Ignoring the 30-minute window. If you spot a wrong account number, cancel immediately.
