Payoneer Nepal (2026): Fees, Withdrawal to Nepali Banks & Step-by-Step Setup
By Wilson Shrestha · Updated 26 October 2026 · Fees checked against Payoneer’s official fee page (last updated 1 January 2026) · Reading time: about 14 minutes

Quick answer
Payoneer works in Nepal and is still the most common way for Nepali freelancers to get paid by Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon and foreign clients. Opening an account is free. Receiving money from another Payoneer user, or into a receiving account in a matching currency, is free; other routes cost 1% to 3.99%. Withdrawing to a Nepali bank costs 1.2% to 4% depending on the currency route (Payoneer shows the exact fee before you confirm). There is a $29.95 annual account fee only if your account receives less than $6,000 in any 12 months. When the money reaches your PAN-linked Nepali bank account, the bank normally withholds 5% tax on foreign-currency service income. On $1,000 at today’s rate, expect roughly Rs 141,000 in hand after fees and tax.

Is Payoneer legal and available in Nepal?
Yes. Payoneer accepts sign-ups from Nepal, and money withdrawn from Payoneer lands in your Nepali bank account as an inward foreign-currency payment, the same way a normal international bank transfer would. That is what makes it legal: the funds enter Nepal through a licensed bank, get converted to rupees through the banking system, and leave a paper trail your bank and the tax office can see.
What Payoneer is not is a Nepali bank or a wallet like eSewa or Khalti. Think of it as a US-regulated payment account that gives you foreign “receiving accounts” (for example a USD account with a US routing number), holds your balance, and then pushes the money to your own bank in Nepal when you ask.
✔ What Payoneer does well for Nepal
- Official payout method on Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon, Airbnb and hundreds of other platforms
- USD, EUR, GBP and other receiving accounts so foreign clients can pay you like a local supplier
- Invoicing through “Request a payment”
- Withdrawal straight to Nepali commercial banks
✘ What it will not do
- Pay you interest or act as a savings account
- Send money to eSewa or Khalti wallets directly
- Replace a dollar card for paying foreign websites from Nepal
- Hide income from Nepal’s tax office – every withdrawal is visible to your bank
How Payoneer money moves from a client to your Nepali bank
Most confusion about Payoneer fees disappears once you see that there are three separate points where money can be lost: when it comes in, when it is converted, and when your bank credits it.
Payoneer to Nepal: the money path and where each fee hits
1. Client or platform
Upwork, Fiverr or a foreign company pays you
2. Payoneer balance
Receiving fee: 0% to 3.99% depending on how they pay
3. Withdrawal
Withdrawal fee: 1.2% to 4%, shown before you confirm
4. Nepali bank
Converted at the bank’s buying rate; 5% tax withheld
Step 2 is where you have the most control: who pays you, and how, decides whether the receiving fee is zero or nearly 4%.
Payoneer fees in Nepal (2026): the full table
These are Payoneer’s published standard fees, last updated on 1 January 2026. Payoneer warns that pricing can differ by country and account type, so the figure that actually applies to you is the one in Settings → Fees inside your account and on the confirmation screen of each transaction.
Receiving money into Payoneer
| How you are paid | Fee to you | Typical Nepali use |
|---|---|---|
| From another Payoneer user’s balance | Free | Agencies and clients who also use Payoneer |
| From a marketplace (Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon and others) | Varies by marketplace | Most freelancers |
| Into a receiving account in your “local” currency | Free | Rare for Nepal, since there is no NPR receiving account |
| Into a receiving account in a non-local currency (e.g. USD, EUR, GBP) | 1% (minimum $1) | Direct foreign clients paying by bank transfer |
| Client pays by credit card (Request a payment) | Up to 3.99% + $0.49 | Small clients who only want to use a card |
| Client pays by US ACH bank debit | 1% | US clients using Request a payment |
| Client pays from an EU or UK bank account | 1% | European clients using Request a payment |
Withdrawal, conversion, card and account fees
| Fee | Amount | What it means for Nepal |
|---|---|---|
| Withdraw to a bank in another country’s currency route | 1.2% – 4% | This is the band that applies to Nepali bank withdrawals. A minimum fee of up to $20 may apply in some countries. |
| Same-country, same-currency withdrawal | $1.50 | Not available for Nepal (it covers the US, EU, UK and a list of other countries). |
| Move money between your own Payoneer currency balances | 0.50% | Only useful if you hold EUR or GBP and want to withdraw everything in USD. |
| Annual account fee | $29.95 | Only if the account receives less than $6,000 in any 12 consecutive months. |
| Payoneer card annual fee | $29.95 | Only if a card is offered to and ordered by you. |
| Card ATM withdrawal | $3.15 + up to 3.5% | The most expensive way to get rupees; avoid it. |
Outdated advice alert: the annual fee is no longer just an “inactivity” fee
Many Nepali guides still say the $29.95 fee only applies if you have no transactions for a year. Payoneer’s 2026 fee page ties it to volume instead: it is charged if your account receives less than $6,000 in any 12 consecutive months. A part-time freelancer earning $300 a month ($3,600 a year) would pay it. On $3,600 that is about 0.8% extra, so factor it into your real cost.
What $1,000 from a client really becomes in Nepali rupees
Fee percentages are hard to feel. Here is the same $1,000 payment pushed through different Payoneer routes, using Nepal Rastra Bank’s USD buying rate of Rs 151.61 (25 October 2026). Your bank’s own buying rate will be close to this; check the USD to NPR rate today before you withdraw.
$1,000 received → rupees credited before the 5% tax (NPR)
Bar scale starts at Rs 130,000 so the differences are visible.
No fees at all (reference only)
Free receiving + lowest withdrawal fee (1.2%)
Free receiving (Payoneer-to-Payoneer) + 2% withdrawal
Client bank transfer to your USD receiving account (1%) + 2% withdrawal
Free receiving + highest withdrawal fee (4%)
Client pays by card (3.99% + $0.49) + 2% withdrawal
Calculated with Payoneer’s published 2026 fees and NRB’s 25 October 2026 buying rate. Marketplace fees (Upwork, Fiverr) are taken before money reaches Payoneer and are not included.
| Route for $1,000 | Credited (NPR) | 5% tax | In your hand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payoneer-to-Payoneer, 2% withdrawal | Rs 148,578 | Rs 7,429 | Rs 141,149 |
| USD receiving account (1%), 2% withdrawal | Rs 147,092 | Rs 7,355 | Rs 139,737 |
| Card payment (3.99% + $0.49), 2% withdrawal | Rs 142,577 | Rs 7,129 | Rs 135,448 |
The takeaway: the gap between the best and worst route is about Rs 5,700 on every $1,000. Over a year of $1,000 monthly payments, choosing the right route is worth roughly Rs 68,000 – more than the cost of a good laptop upgrade.
How to open a Payoneer account from Nepal (step by step)
The sign-up takes about 15 minutes. Approval usually takes from a few hours to a few business days, longer if Payoneer asks for extra documents. Prepare everything below before you start, because most rejections come from small mismatches.
What you need
- A government photo ID. A Nepali passport is the smoothest; many users also verify with a citizenship certificate or National ID card. Use whichever the sign-up screen accepts for Nepal.
- Your exact legal name, spelled the same as on your ID and your bank account.
- A Nepali bank account in your own name, with KYC updated and your PAN linked (check your PAN number online if you are unsure).
- Your bank’s SWIFT code and branch name (see our list of Nepal bank SWIFT codes).
- A personal email you will keep, and a mobile number that receives international SMS.
- For a business account: company registration, PAN/VAT certificate and a document showing who controls the company.
Step 1 · Start from the right place
If you work on Upwork, Fiverr or another marketplace, start the Payoneer sign-up from inside that platform’s withdrawal settings. The account gets linked automatically and some platforms set up partner pricing. Otherwise, sign up at payoneer.com.
Step 2 · Choose individual or business
Freelancers and creators should choose Individual / Freelancer. Choose Company only if the money belongs to a registered firm and the withdrawal bank account is in the firm’s name.
Step 3 · Enter personal and contact details
Type your name in English exactly as on your ID. Use your real Nepal address. Do not use a relative’s details or a foreign address – it will fail verification later.
Step 4 · Add your Nepali bank account
Enter the account holder name, account number, bank name, branch and SWIFT code. The name must match your Payoneer name letter for letter, including middle names.
Step 5 · Upload your ID and complete verification
Upload clear colour photos with all four corners visible. Payoneer may also ask for a selfie, a short video check or a description of your work and sample client invoices.
Step 6 · Wait for approval, then get your receiving details
Once approved, open Receive → Receiving accounts to see your USD (and other currency) account details to share with direct clients.
The name-matching trap
If your citizenship says Ram Bahadur Shrestha but your bank account says Ram B. Shrestha, withdrawals can be held or returned. Fix the spelling at your bank before you add the account to Payoneer. This one mistake causes more stuck withdrawals than any other.
How to withdraw Payoneer money to a Nepali bank account
- Log in and choose Withdraw → To bank account.
- Pick the balance (usually USD) and your linked Nepali account.
- Enter the amount. Payoneer shows the fee and the exchange rate or amount the bank will receive before you confirm – screenshot this for your records.
- Confirm with the code sent to your phone or email.
- Wait for the credit. Most withdrawals reach Nepali banks within 1 to 3 business days; weekends, Nepali public holidays and US bank holidays add delays.
- Check your bank statement for the inward remittance entry and the tax deducted.
Which Nepali banks accept Payoneer withdrawals?
Any commercial bank that receives inward foreign-currency transfers can receive Payoneer withdrawals – in practice this means the Class ‘A’ commercial banks such as Nabil, Global IME, NIC Asia, Himalayan, Standard Chartered, Nepal Investment Mega, Siddhartha, Prabhu and others. Ask your branch two questions before your first withdrawal:
- “Do you charge anything for crediting an inward foreign remittance?” (Some banks charge a small flat fee.)
- “Will my account be credited in rupees, or can I keep it in a foreign-currency account?”
Can you keep dollars instead of converting?
Resident Nepalis who earn foreign currency – freelancers and IT exporters included – can open a foreign-currency (FCY) account at a Nepali bank by showing proof of foreign income, such as Payoneer statements and client invoices. Banks pair these with an FCY card you can spend from. This is useful if you pay for software, hosting or ads in dollars, because you skip converting to rupees and back. Ordinary rupee accounts remain the simplest choice if you spend your income in Nepal.
The cheapest ways to get paid into Payoneer
1. Payoneer-to-Payoneer
Cost to you: free
Ask clients and agencies whether they already have Payoneer. Many Asian and European agencies do.
2. Marketplace payout
Cost: set by the platform
Upwork, Fiverr and others push earnings to Payoneer. Check the platform’s own withdrawal fee page.
3. Bank transfer to receiving account
Cost: 1% (min $1)
Give a US client your USD routing and account number; they pay like a local domestic transfer.
4. Card payment request
Cost: up to 3.99% + $0.49
Convenient for clients, expensive for you. Price your invoice to cover it, or offer ACH as the default.

Tax and Nepal Rastra Bank rules for Payoneer income (2026)
This is the section most competing guides skip or get wrong. Here is what applies in fiscal year 2083/84 (from mid-July 2026).
The 5% tax your bank withholds
When foreign-currency income for IT, software, digital or similar services lands in your PAN-linked Nepali account through a bank, the bank withholds 5% and pays it to the Inland Revenue Department. For individuals this is widely treated as the final tax on that income stream, which is far lower than normal income tax slabs. Tax advisers note that the final-tax treatment can be subject to an annual income ceiling, so if you earn a large amount, confirm your position with a tax professional.
What Budget 2083/84 changed
The FY 2083/84 budget announced a 50% income tax exemption on income from exporting IT services (the previous budget had a 75% rebate) and a full exemption on sweat equity received by IT workers. The budget also cut personal income tax slabs, with the first 1% band raised to Rs 10 lakh. How the 50% exemption interacts with the 5% bank withholding depends on the Finance Act and IRD procedures, so ask your bank how it is applying withholding on your account this year.
NRB rules that affect freelancers
- Use the banking channel. Income received through Payoneer into a Nepali bank is traceable and legal. Hundi and crypto routes are not, and crypto transactions are banned in Nepal.
- Paying for tools abroad got easier. NRB’s April 2026 circular lets Nepali citizens who earn foreign currency online pay up to $25,000 a year through the banking channel for IT services used in their work. Ordinary individuals still have the $500 dollar card limit. See how to pay online from Nepal for the full rules.
- Payoneer balance is not a Nepali deposit. It is fine as a collection account, but bring the money home through your bank rather than treating Payoneer as long-term savings.
Records to keep for every payment
✔ Client name and invoice
✔ Contract or marketplace order ID
✔ Payoneer transaction ID and statement
✔ Withdrawal confirmation screenshot
✔ Bank credit advice showing NPR and tax
✔ A yearly total for your tax return
Payoneer vs direct SWIFT vs PayPal vs Wise in Nepal
| Option | Can a Nepal resident receive? | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payoneer | Yes | About 2–6% all-in, depending on route | Marketplaces, small and mid-size client payments |
| Direct SWIFT to your Nepali bank | Yes | Sender’s wire fee + possible correspondent bank fee ($10–$30 is common) + bank rate | Large invoices (roughly $2,000 and above) from one client |
| PayPal | No – as of October 2026 its Nepal site still offers no receiving | – | Paying only, not getting paid |
| Wise | No account for Nepal residents; Wise can only send to Nepal | – | Family abroad sending money to Nepal |
For a single large payment, a direct SWIFT wire can beat Payoneer because the fixed wire costs are small compared with a percentage fee. For many smaller payments, or anything from a marketplace, Payoneer wins on convenience and usually on cost.
Common Payoneer problems in Nepal and how to fix them
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Application declined | Blurry ID, name mismatch, or vague work description | Reapply with clear photos, exact legal name and a short description of your service and clients. |
| Withdrawal returned | Wrong SWIFT code, wrong account number or name mismatch | Re-check the SWIFT code after any bank merger; correct the name at your bank. |
| Money “sent” but not in bank | Holidays or bank compliance review | Wait 3 business days, then give the branch the Payoneer transaction details. |
| Account on hold | Extra verification request | Upload invoices, contracts or your profile link in the Verification Center quickly. |
| Unexpected $29.95 charge | Received under $6,000 in 12 months | Consolidate payments into Payoneer, or accept it as a fixed yearly cost. |
| Less NPR than expected | Withdrawal fee + bank rate + 5% tax | Compare the confirmation screen with your bank credit advice; use the worked example above. |
Nine ways to pay less in Payoneer fees
- Ask clients for Payoneer-to-Payoneer first. It is the only fully free incoming route.
- Make bank transfer your default invoice option, not card. That alone moves you from nearly 4% to 1%.
- Withdraw in larger, less frequent batches so any minimum or fixed bank charges hit fewer times.
- Check the confirmation screen every time. The fee and rate are shown before you confirm; if they look high, compare with your bank’s rate that day.
- Use direct SWIFT for big one-off invoices from a single client.
- Avoid ATM withdrawals with a Payoneer card; $3.15 plus up to 3.5% is the worst rate in this guide.
- Do not convert between Payoneer balances unless you have to (0.5% each time).
- Plan around the $6,000 threshold. Routing all your client income through Payoneer can avoid the $29.95 yearly fee.
- Keep the money in dollars if you spend in dollars, using a Nepali FCY account for tools such as hosting, design or AI tool subscriptions.
What about the Payoneer card in Nepal?
Payoneer decides card eligibility by country and account type, and many Nepal-based users do not see a card offer at all. Do not plan your income around one. If your dashboard does offer a card, remember the $29.95 annual card fee and the cash withdrawal costs, and use a Nepali FCY card or a bank withdrawal instead whenever you can.
Which setup is right for you?
New Fiverr or Upwork seller
Sign up through the marketplace, link a rupee account at your current bank, withdraw monthly.
Freelancer with direct clients
Share your USD receiving account, push clients to bank transfer, keep invoices for every payment.
Earning $2,000+ per invoice
Compare a direct SWIFT wire with Payoneer for each big invoice; open an FCY account.
Registered IT company
Use a company Payoneer account with a company bank account, and claim the IT export tax benefits properly.
Frequently asked questions about Payoneer in Nepal
Does Payoneer work in Nepal in 2026?
Yes. Nepali residents can open a Payoneer account, receive payments from marketplaces and foreign clients, and withdraw to a Nepali commercial bank account.
How much does Payoneer charge to withdraw to a Nepali bank?
Payoneer’s published range for withdrawals that cross currencies or countries is 1.2% to 4%, with a minimum fee in some countries. The exact fee for your withdrawal appears on the confirmation screen before you approve it.
Is there a Payoneer annual fee?
Yes, $29.95, but only if your account receives less than $6,000 in any 12 consecutive months. Accounts that receive more than that do not pay it.
How long does a Payoneer withdrawal take to reach a Nepali bank?
Usually 1 to 3 business days. Weekends and Nepali or US public holidays can add a few days.
Do I have to pay tax on Payoneer income in Nepal?
Yes. Banks normally withhold 5% on foreign-currency income for IT and digital services credited to a PAN-linked account, which is generally treated as final tax for individuals. Budget 2083/84 also announced a 50% exemption on IT service export income, so confirm how your bank is applying it.
Can I withdraw Payoneer money to eSewa or Khalti?
Not directly. Withdraw to your bank account first, then load your wallet from the bank.
Can I use a citizenship certificate to verify Payoneer?
Payoneer asks for a government-issued photo ID. A passport is the most reliable; many Nepali users verify with their citizenship certificate or National ID card. Use whatever the sign-up screen accepts for Nepal.
Is PayPal available in Nepal now?
Only partly. As of October 2026 you can open a PayPal account in Nepal to pay or send money, but PayPal’s Nepal site still does not offer receiving or requesting payments, so it does not replace Payoneer for freelancers.
Is Payoneer better than a direct bank transfer?
For marketplaces and many small payments, yes. For a single large invoice of a few thousand dollars, a direct SWIFT wire to your Nepali bank can be cheaper because its fees are mostly fixed rather than a percentage.
