Background

What Is Good Friday and Why Is It Called “Good”?

Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday, when Christians remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus at Calvary. It falls during Holy Week, after Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday, and before Holy Saturday and Easter.

The name puzzles many people, because the day remembers suffering. Most scholars believe “good” is used in its older English sense of holy or pious, the same way people once spoke of “the good book”. Christians also see the day as good because of what they believe it achieved: forgiveness and reconciliation with God, which is completed in the resurrection on Easter Sunday. A popular theory that the name comes from “God's Friday” is widely repeated but has little evidence behind it.

Many churches observe the day with fasting, a service in the afternoon (traditionally around 3 p.m., the hour Jesus is believed to have died), the Stations of the Cross, and a bare or simply dressed altar. In Catholic churches the priest wears red, while many Protestant churches use black or no colour at all.

Good Friday vs Easter Messages: What's the Difference?

How to Write Your Own Good Friday Message

The most memorable messages are short and personal. Use these three steps:

  1. Name the meaning of the dayMention the cross, Christ's love, sacrifice or forgiveness in one short phrase.
  2. Make it about themAdd a prayer, memory or hope that is specific to the person you're writing to.
  3. Close with a gentle blessing“Blessed Good Friday”, “With prayers” or “Peace be with you” works better than “Happy”.
Example using the formula

“Remembering Christ's love on the cross today. I'm praying your new job brings you peace, Anita. Blessed Good Friday.”

Do

  • Keep it short and sincere
  • Use the person's name
  • Mention Easter hope for people who are grieving
  • Keep work messages inclusive

Avoid

  • Party emojis and “Happy Good Friday!”
  • Long forwarded chain messages
  • Bright, festive images
  • Sales promotions disguised as wishes

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Good Friday 2027?

Good Friday 2027 is on Friday, March 26, two days before Easter Sunday on March 28. Orthodox Christians observe Good Friday on April 30, 2027.

Is it okay to say “Happy Good Friday”?

Many Christians prefer not to, because Good Friday remembers Jesus' death. “Blessed Good Friday”, “Peaceful Good Friday” or simply “Wishing you a meaningful Good Friday” fit the day better. Save “Happy” for Easter Sunday.

What should I write in a Good Friday message?

Keep it short: mention Christ's love or sacrifice, add a personal prayer or memory, and close with a gentle blessing. See the three-step formula above for an example.

Can I send Good Friday wishes to non-Christians?

Yes, if the relationship allows it. Keep the message inclusive, for example: “Wishing you a peaceful long weekend and time to rest with family.”

What colours and symbols suit Good Friday?

The cross, crown of thorns, candles and doves are the most common symbols. Many Catholic churches use red, and many Protestant churches use black or no colour. Purple is the colour of the wider season of Lent. Keep designs simple and muted.

Why is Good Friday called “Good”?

“Good” most likely comes from an older English meaning of “holy”. Christians also call it good because they believe Jesus' death brought forgiveness, fulfilled in the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Choosing the Right Good Friday Message

The best Good Friday wish isn't the longest or the most poetic. It's the one that reminds someone they are loved and remembered on a quiet, holy day. Pick a message above, add their name and one personal line, and send it with a prayer.

I live in your heart

Your shadow in my shadow

My hand in yours

My world is in your smile

Nepali Love Poem for a Broken Heart

For a lover who left, or a love that changed. Sometimes the kindest thing to do with pain is to put it into words.

The path you left behind

Two-Line Love Shayari in Nepali

Short on time? These two-liners fit a status, a caption or a quick message.

Roman Nepali Love Lines with English Meaning

Cannot read Devanagari? These are the same two-liners in Roman Nepali, each with its meaning in English.

Timi hasda sansar ujyalo lagchha,
timi nahuda diuso ni adhyaro lagchha.

When you smile, the world feels bright. Without you, even noon feels dark.

Timro naam linda manma bihana parchha,
timro samjhanale raat pani nyano hunchha.

Saying your name brings morning to my heart. Remembering you warms the night.

Himal jastai atal chha mero maya,
khola jastai bagchha timrai tira.

My love is as steady as the mountains and flows toward you like a river.

Timi nai mero ghar, timi nai mero thau,
timi bina adhuro chha yo man.

You are my home and my place. Without you, this heart feels incomplete.

English Love Poems with a Nepali Spirit

Two poems inspired by Nepal’s mountains, rivers and moonlit nights.

Under the Himalayan Stars

A Valentine’s poem

In the mountains high, where rivers flow,
Amidst the breeze, our love does grow.
Underneath the stars, our hearts align,
In every moment, your love is mine.
Through winding paths, we’ll walk as one,
Together, till the setting sun.
Hand in hand, our journey unfolds,
In your love, my heart beholds.
In the whispers of the night so deep,
Our love story, forever we’ll keep.
In this Nepali style, our hearts entwine,
Forever yours, my Valentine.

Moonlit Nights

For a love that feels effortless

In moonlit nights, our love takes flight,
In your embrace, everything feels right.
Your laughter, like a melody divine,
In your eyes, I see stars align.
Your smile, a beacon in the darkest night,
With you, love feels effortlessly right.
Forever entwined, our souls unite,
With you, my love, every day feels bright.

How do I write a short romantic poem in Nepali?

Pick one feeling, such as missing someone or feeling safe with them. Use everyday words like माया, मन and सम्झना, keep every line short, and rhyme the line endings if you can. Finish with a line that speaks directly to your partner.
