GTA 6 Delay Full Timeline: Every Date Change From 2022 to the 19 November 2026 Launch
Last updated: 6 October 2026 · 44 days until launch · Fact-checked against Rockstar Newswire and Take-Two filings

Quick answer
GTA 6 has been officially delayed twice. Rockstar first promised a 2025 release (narrowed to fall 2025), moved it to 26 May 2026 on 2 May 2025, then moved it again to Thursday, 19 November 2026 on 6 November 2025. As of 6 October 2026 there is no third delay: pre-orders are open, pre-loading starts on 12 November and the game launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November.
Most “GTA 6 delay” articles give you three dates and stop. That leaves out the useful part: when each delay was announced, who announced it, what Rockstar did in the days after, and what that pattern tells you about the November date. This page puts every milestone from the 2022 confirmation to launch week on one timeline, with times converted to Nepal Time (NPT) where they matter.

How the GTA 6 release date moved
Here is the whole story in one picture: the target Rockstar was aiming for at each point, and how far it slid.

2022: Confirmation and the leak
4 February 2022 — Rockstar confirms that development of the next Grand Theft Auto is “well underway”. No date, no name.
18–19 September 2022 — Early development footage leaks online in one of the largest leaks in gaming history. Rockstar confirms it the next day and says the leak will not affect development long-term.
2023: Trailer 1 and the first window
8 November 2023 — Rockstar announces the first trailer for early December.
4 December 2023 (US evening; 5 December in Nepal) — The trailer leaks, so Rockstar posts it a day early. It ends with the line “Coming 2025” for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This is the first public release target.
2024: “Fall 2025”
May 2024 — Take-Two narrows the window to fall 2025 in its earnings report. Through the rest of 2024, Take-Two keeps repeating that target.
2025: Two delays in six months
2 May 2025 — Delay #1. Rockstar posts on its Newswire that GTA 6 will now release on 26 May 2026. The statement says the team needs more time to deliver the quality fans expect. Unusually, the delay comes with an exact day rather than a vague window, which many fans took as a sign of confidence.
6 May 2025 — Trailer 2 arrives four days later. It introduces Jason Duval properly alongside Lucia and shows far more of Leonida.
6 November 2025 — Delay #2. On Take-Two’s quarterly earnings day, Rockstar announces the game will now release on Thursday, 19 November 2026, a gap of 5 months and 24 days. Take-Two’s share price falls sharply in after-hours trading. CEO Strauss Zelnick says the company is grateful the new date still falls inside the same fiscal year.
2026: Holding the line
February 2026 — On Take-Two’s earnings call, Zelnick reaffirms 19 November and says marketing will start in summer 2026.
21 May 2026 — Take-Two’s full-year results again name the 19 November launch as the driver of record results in fiscal 2027.
26 May 2026 — The original “new” date passes with no game. Zelnick later says the November date is roughly 18 months behind the original internal plan.
June 2026 — Rockstar reveals the cover art and pricing. Pre-orders open at local midnight on 25 June: $79.99 Standard, $99.99 Ultimate. The game is digital-only; boxed copies contain a download code.
6–7 August 2026 — Rockstar announces an “Extended Look” premiering on Netflix. The next day, Take-Two’s earnings release lists 19 November with no qualifier, and Zelnick calls pre-orders “unprecedented”.
27 August 2026 — Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premieres on Netflix at 3 pm ET (12:45 am, 28 August NPT), then on YouTube six hours later (6:45 am NPT). It is the first proper gameplay showing.
September 2026 — Take-Two holds its annual shareholder meeting on 17 September, and GTA 6 appears at PlayStation’s Tokyo Game Show booth. No change to the date.
6 October 2026 (today) — Official No new delay. 19 November remains the published date.
What happens next
Early November 2026 — Expected Take-Two’s next quarterly results. This is the last big checkpoint before launch.
12 November 2026 — Official Digital pre-loading opens at local midnight, and boxed code-in-box copies go on sale.
19 November 2026 — Official Launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not confirmed an exact unlock hour.
Both delays side by side
| Detail | Delay #1 | Delay #2 |
|---|---|---|
| Announced | 2 May 2025 | 6 November 2025 |
| Old target | Fall 2025 | 26 May 2026 |
| New target | 26 May 2026 | 19 November 2026 |
| Slip | About 7 months | 177 days |
| Where | Rockstar Newswire, ahead of earnings | Rockstar post + Take-Two earnings day |
| Reason given | More time for quality | More time for polish |
| Same fiscal year? | No (FY26 → FY27) | Yes (still FY27) |
That last row matters more than it looks. Take-Two’s fiscal year 2027 runs from April 2026 to the end of March 2027. The second delay kept GTA 6 inside it, and Take-Two has since told investors to expect record results in that year. Another slip past 31 March 2027 would break that promise, which is one reason a third delay would be so costly.
Why was GTA 6 delayed?
Rockstar has never named a specific problem. Both statements said the same thing in different words: the team needed more time to finish the game to its standard. Here is what we can separate into fact and reasonable reading.
What is confirmed
- Both delays were attributed to quality and polish.
- Zelnick said forcing Rockstar to hit the earlier date could have hurt the game, and the company.
- He later put the final date at about 18 months behind the original internal schedule.
Our reading (not confirmed)
- The scale of Leonida and two playable leads simply take time to test.
- A November launch catches the holiday season, a commercial bonus.
- There is no public evidence that the 2022 leak caused either delay.
Rockstar delays almost every big game
GTA 6 is not an outlier. Rockstar’s last three major releases all slipped, and each one launched on its final date.
| Game | First target | Delays | Actual release |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA IV | October 2007 | 1 | 29 April 2008 |
| GTA V | Spring 2013 | 1 | 17 September 2013 |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Fall 2017 | 2 | 26 October 2018 |
| GTA 6 | 2025 (fall) | 2 | 19 November 2026 (scheduled) |
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the closest match: two delays, then a firm autumn date that held. Once Rockstar has given a final day and started taking pre-orders, it has tended to ship on that day.
Will GTA 6 be delayed again?
Nothing is impossible until the game is on your console, but the evidence points strongly to 19 November holding.
Signs the date is locked
- Pre-orders have been open since 25 June 2026.
- A pre-load date (12 November) and boxed retail date are public.
- Real gameplay has been shown to the world (27 August).
- Take-Two has repeated 19 November in every earnings report since the delay.
What could still change
- Both earlier dates were also called firm when announced.
- The second delay landed on an earnings day; one more is due in early November.
- Rockstar has not confirmed an exact unlock hour yet.
Our verdict
A third delay is very unlikely. Pulling the game now would mean refunding or holding millions of pre-orders and rescheduling retail stock six weeks out. Watch Take-Two’s early-November earnings report: if 19 November is repeated there, treat it as final.
GTA 6 delay myths vs facts
| Claim | Fact |
|---|---|
| “GTA 6 has been delayed to 2027.” | False. No such announcement exists. The official date is 19 November 2026. |
| “GTA 6 has been delayed three times.” | Misleading. There are three targets (2025, May 2026, Nov 2026) but only two delays. |
| “The PC version launches with the consoles.” | False. Launch is PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. No PC date has been announced. |
| “The 2022 leak caused the delays.” | Unproven. Rockstar said the leak would not affect development long-term and has never linked it to a delay. |
What the timeline means for players in Nepal
- Pre-load at local midnight on 12 November. Rockstar ties pre-loading to local midnight, so check that your console’s time zone is set correctly. If your PlayStation or Xbox account belongs to another region, confirm the time on that store’s listing.
- Download early. GTA 6 is digital-only, even the boxed copy. On a typical Nepali home connection, a game this size can take many hours, so use the full pre-load week.
- Budget now. See our GTA 6 price in Nepal guide, and if you still need hardware, our PS5 vs Xbox Series X comparison.
