GTA 6 Map Size: How Big Is Leonida? Official Numbers vs Estimates (2026)
By Wilson Shrestha · Updated 6 October 2026

Everyone asking “how big is the GTA 6 map?” gets a different number. One site says 125 km², another says “officially 2.7× GTA 5”, a third says 58 square miles. The confusing part is that most of those figures are guesses dressed up as facts.
This guide separates what Rockstar has actually said (updated after the August 2026 Extended Look and the 29 September 2026 Game Informer cover story) from fan estimates, then does the maths properly so you can see where every number comes from.
Quick answer
Rockstar says the GTA 6 map (the state of Leonida) is about twice the size of GTA 5’s map and roughly three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos. Rockstar has not published an area in km² or square miles.
Doing the maths from GTA 5’s commonly used figures gives roughly 100 km² of land, or about 150–160 km² (≈58–60 sq mi) if you count the coastline and water the way most GTA 5 figures do. The long-running fan mapping project sits in between at ~125 km² of land.

What Rockstar Has Officially Confirmed About the GTA 6 Map Size
For almost three years, every “GTA 6 map size” article was built on the 2022 leaks and trailer frame-counting. That changed in two steps in 2026:
| When | Who said it | What was said | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 27–28 Aug 2026 (Extended Look week) | Rob Nelson, Rockstar North co-studio head, to YouTuber TGG | Map is about twice GTA 5’s and three times the playable area of RDR2. Vice City is twice Los Santos. Built-up areas outside Vice City are 11× those outside Los Santos. | OFFICIAL |
| Aug 2026 | New York Times report built on Rockstar developer interviews | Also put the map at three times RDR2’s playable area. | OFFICIAL |
| 29 Sept 2026 (Game Informer issue 382) | Aaron Garbut, Rockstar North co-studio head | Leonida is about twice GTA 5’s map and Rockstar’s biggest map yet, with more interiors and density. Named six main regions. | OFFICIAL |
| Any time so far | Rockstar | An exact area in km² or square miles | UNKNOWN |
Notice the wording: “about twice” and “three times”. These are rounded comparisons given in interviews, not survey measurements. Garbut did not give a square-kilometre figure, and Game Informer didn’t print one either. Any article claiming an “official” km² number is wrong.
GTA 6 Map Size in Square Kilometres and Square Miles
Here’s the problem nobody explains: Rockstar never published GTA 5’s area either. So “twice GTA 5” depends entirely on which GTA 5 number you start from. Three are in common use:
| GTA 5 baseline used | What it measures | GTA 6 at “2×” | In square miles |
|---|---|---|---|
| ~48–50 km² | Land only (Los Santos + Blaine County, no ocean) | ~96–100 km² | ~37–39 sq mi |
| ~75.8 km² (29.3 sq mi) | Land plus surrounding coast/water – the figure most sites quote | ~152 km² | ~58.6 sq mi |
| ~127 km² (“49 sq mi”) | A larger figure that circulates online with no clear land/water breakdown | ~254 km² | ~98 sq mi |
The third baseline is the reason you’ll see wildly inflated GTA 6 numbers online. Stick to the first two and a sensible range appears: about 100 km² of land, or about 150–160 km² including water. Insider Gaming lands on the same range in its write-up of the Game Informer story.
GTA 6 map size estimates (km²)
The fan figure comes from the long-running GTA VI – Vice City & Leonida State Mapping Project on GTAForums. Its v0.045 build (April 2024) measured about 125 km² of land using RAGE engine units – about 2.55× GTA 5 measured the same way. A similar project before GTA 5’s launch ended up close to the real map, but it is still a reconstruction, not data from Rockstar.
GTA 6 vs GTA 5 vs RDR2: Map Size Comparison
| Game | Setting | Size (relative) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA 6 (2026) | Leonida (Florida-inspired) | ~2× GTA 5 · ~3× RDR2 playable area | OFFICIAL Rockstar |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | Five US-inspired states | Fans estimate ~75 km² | ESTIMATE |
| GTA 5 (2013) | Los Santos + Blaine County | ~49 km² land / ~76 km² with water | ESTIMATE |
Wait – how can GTA 6 be 2× GTA 5 but 3× RDR2?
Most fan measurements put RDR2’s map at roughly the same size as GTA 5 or larger. If both were measured the same way, “2× GTA 5” and “3× RDR2” couldn’t both be true. The key word in Rob Nelson’s quote is “playable area”: RDR2 has big stretches of mountains, wilderness and impassable terrain, plus regions you can’t reach for much of the story. Measured by usable space, RDR2 shrinks – so both ratios can be roughly right on their own terms. The practical takeaway: treat both as ballpark comparisons, not precise multipliers.
Vice City Is Twice Los Santos – and the 11× Stat Matters More
For players, the most important number isn’t total area. It’s this: Rockstar says the built-up area outside Vice City is about 11 times the built-up area outside Los Santos.
In GTA 5, once you left Los Santos you were mostly in desert, hills and a few small towns like Sandy Shores and Paleto Bay. GTA 6 flips that. Leonida has suburbs, towns and secondary cities spread across the state, so the countryside should feel lived-in instead of empty. That’s arguably the bigger upgrade: a map that is about twice as large overall, but with far more places to actually stop.

The Six Regions of Leonida
Game Informer’s cover story confirmed six main regions. Three have clear real-world inspirations confirmed through Rockstar’s marketing; the rest haven’t been officially matched to real places.
| Region | What it is | Real-world inspiration |
|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Leonida’s main city – beaches, art deco, cruise port | Miami |
| Leonida Keys | Island chain at the southern end of the map | Florida Keys |
| Grassrivers | Wetlands and swamp | The Everglades |
| Port Gellhorn | Coastal region | Not officially stated |
| Ambrosia | Inland region | Not officially stated |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | National park on the northern Leonida–Gloriana border | Northern Florida near the Georgia line |
TGG, who briefly saw the full map under fog of war, reported that there didn’t seem to be a Florida-style panhandle. So don’t expect Leonida to be a 1:1 copy of Florida’s shape – it’s a compressed, game-designed version.
The story is built to move Jason Duval and Lucia across these regions. To see where each one sits, open our interactive GTA 6 map.
How Big Is GTA 6 Compared to Kathmandu?
Square kilometres are hard to picture. So here’s a comparison for readers in Nepal: Kathmandu Metropolitan City covers 49.45 km² (32 wards, per official figures).
| Map | Approx. land area | In “Kathmandu Metros” |
|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 (land only) | ~49 km² | ≈ 1 Kathmandu |
| GTA 6 (2× GTA 5 land) | ~100 km² | ≈ 2 Kathmandus |
| GTA 6 (fan mapping project) | ~125 km² | ≈ 2.5 Kathmandus |
| GTA 6 (incl. water, upper estimate) | ~152 km² | ≈ 3 Kathmandus |
Put simply: GTA 5’s land area was roughly the size of Kathmandu Metro, from Kalanki to Koteshwor and Balaju to the Bagmati. GTA 6 is about two Kathmandus of land – and that space is far denser than GTA 5’s, with more enterable buildings per block. That’s why game sizes are scaled down from real life; a true-scale Florida would be mostly empty driving.
GTA 6 Map Size: Myths vs Facts
Why Map Size Isn’t the Whole Story
Rockstar maps are rarely the biggest in gaming, and they don’t try to be. The bet is on how much is packed into each block. From the Game Informer story and the Extended Look, here’s what fills Leonida:
- More interiors – Garbut said the team reached a “critical mass” of enterable buildings.
- 170+ animal species, including 60+ bird types and 30+ land mammals, sorted into Rare, Discoverable and Legendary.
- Localised, persistent weather – it can be sunny where you are while a storm hits nearby. Tropical storms and hurricanes are confirmed.
- Activities across the map – scuba diving, kayaking, airboats, jet skis, base jumping, off-road racing, gyms, zoos and mini golf.
- Water as play space – the Keys, Grassrivers swamps and the coast make boats and diving part of exploration, which makes the map feel bigger than its land area.
Reports from TGG’s visit also said Rob Nelson’s own playthrough took around 80 hours including optional objectives – a hint at how much content sits on top of the map. Treat that as a single developer’s run, not an official completion time. For everything else Rockstar has shown, see our roundup of GTA 6 features.
Our take
If you’re planning around launch, the useful mental model is: twice GTA 5’s land, much denser, plus a lot of water. That means fast travel, aircraft and boats will matter more than in GTA 5, and exploration-focused players will get far more out of the countryside. Ignore any precise square-mile figure until someone measures the retail game after 19 November.
