Send Money from Qatar to Nepal (2026): Cheapest Ways, QAR to NPR Rates & What QR 1,000 Really Lands As

Updated 27 October 2026 · Written for Nepali workers, drivers, security guards, hotel staff, nurses and engineers in Doha, Al Wakrah, Al Khor, Lusail and the Industrial Area who send riyals home every month.

Fast and secure money transfer from Qatar to Nepal on a mobile phone with Qatari riyals and Nepali rupees

Short answer

The cheapest way to send money from Qatar to Nepal in 2026 is usually a licensed Qatari exchange house app or a Qatari bank’s direct-remit service, paid straight into a Nepali bank account or a verified eSewa, Khalti or IME Pay wallet. A SWIFT wire from your Qatari bank is the most expensive route for normal family transfers.

On QR 1,000, the gap between a good app and a bank wire is roughly NPR 2,400 — about NPR 29,000 a year if you send monthly. And because most fees in Qatar are flat, sending once a month instead of four times can save you more than switching provider.

Compare on one number only: how many rupees reach your family. On 22 October 2026 the open-market rate was about 1 QAR = 41.83 NPR and the Nepal Rastra Bank selling rate was 41.55.

The Qatar–Nepal corridor in numbers

Qatar is one of the three biggest Gulf destinations for Nepali workers, alongside the UAE and Saudi Arabia. These four figures explain why this corridor matters so much to Nepal — and why the providers compete hard for your riyals.

What most “Qatar to Nepal money transfer” pages leave out

Search this phrase and page one is mostly exchange-house landing pages, rate widgets and short generic blog posts. Each tells you to “check the rate”. Almost none explains what really decides how many rupees your family receives. This guide covers the gaps:

  • The true cost of QR 1,000 sent four different ways, worked out in rupees.
  • The flat-fee trap: why a QR 15 fee costs 7.5% on QR 200 but only 0.5% on QR 3,000.
  • Exchange house vs Qatari bank app — QIB, Commercial Bank and Doha Bank all have direct links to Nepali banks now.
  • Two common myths: that Fawran can send money to Nepal, and that Wise is the cheapest QAR option.
  • Payday and timing: why the queue at the exchange house on salary Friday costs you more than time.
  • What Nepali workers told NRB in Doha this week about fees and hundi — and what it means for you.

QAR to NPR in 2026: your riyals are worth more than last year

This has been a good year to be earning in riyals. Through most of 2025 one riyal bought roughly 38 rupees. By late 2026 the rate had climbed to around 41.8 — so the same QR 1,000 now lands as roughly NPR 3,500 more than it did a year ago, before you even think about fees.

The insight most senders miss: QAR/NPR is really USD/INR

The Qatari riyal is pegged to the US dollar at 3.64 riyals per dollar, and the Nepalese rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee at 1.6. So the QAR/NPR rate barely depends on Qatar or Nepal at all — it moves almost one-for-one with how the US dollar trades against the Indian rupee. If you want to know which way your rupees are heading, watch today’s USD to NPR remittance rate and divide by 3.64.

The two costs inside every Qatar to Nepal transfer

1. The transfer fee

The flat charge the counter or app shows you. In Qatar it is usually a fixed amount rather than a percentage. Alfardan Exchange, for example, advertises online transfers from QR 15, and World Bank price surveys of the Qatar–Nepal corridor have recorded flat fees of QR 15 to QR 20 at exchange houses such as City Exchange and Al Dar. A SWIFT wire from a Qatari bank typically costs more, and an intermediary bank can take a further cut.

2. The exchange rate margin

The mid-market rate is the “real” QAR/NPR rate. Your provider pays out at a slightly lower rate and keeps the difference. A “zero fee” offer has not removed the cost — it has moved it into the rate. You can check the margin in ten seconds:

Margin % = (Mid-market rate − Your rate) ÷ Mid-market rate × 100

Example: mid-market is 41.80 and the counter offers 41.40. Margin = (41.80 − 41.40) ÷ 41.80 × 100 = 0.96% — NPR 400 lost on every QR 1,000, before the fee.

Worked example: what QR 1,000 really lands as in Nepal

The same QR 1,000 sent four ways on the same day, with the fee paid on top in Qatar. The mid-market rate is fixed at 1 QAR = 41.80 NPR to keep the maths simple. The provider rates and fees are illustrative of typical margins, not quotes from any named company — always check live quotes before you send.

The “zero fee” offer still costs more than the app that charges QR 15. The bank wire costs nearly four times as much — about NPR 2,400 less for your family on every QR 1,000.

The flat-fee trap: why small, frequent transfers cost you most

Because most Qatari providers charge a flat fee, the fee hurts most on small amounts. A World Bank price survey of one Doha exchange house showed the same QR 20 fee came to about 3.1% of the total cost on roughly QR 730, but only about 1.4% on roughly QR 1,820. Here is the same effect for a flat QR 15 fee:

Simple arithmetic: fee ÷ amount sent × 100. The rate margin comes on top.

A realistic example from the Industrial Area

Picture a construction worker who sends QR 300 home every week from the branch near his camp, because that is when his family asks. At a QR 20 cash-pickup fee, that is QR 80 a month in fees alone.

If he instead sends one QR 1,200 transfer on payday through an exchange-house app straight into his wife’s verified eSewa wallet, and she spends from the wallet through the month, he pays QR 15. That is QR 65 saved every month — roughly NPR 2,700, or about NPR 32,000 a year, without changing provider at all.

Illustrative scenario based on the typical fees shown above.

Cost ranges are rounded from the worked example above and from World Bank remittance price surveys for this corridor. Your exact cost depends on the day’s rate and the payout method.

Exchange houses: still the backbone of this corridor

Most Nepali workers in Qatar still send through licensed exchange houses, and the big Nepali payout companies have partners across Doha. IME Remit, for example, lists Al Dar, Unimoni, Al Jazeera Exchange, Al Zaman, Habib Qatar International Exchange and Ria among its Qatar partners. eSewa Money Transfer has tie-ups with Al Dar and Unimoni that pay straight into eSewa wallets or Nepali bank accounts, and Global IME Bank signed with Gulf Exchange in 2024 so its 17 Qatar branches can deposit directly to Nepali accounts.

The practical upshot: you rarely need to walk into a branch any more. Most of these exchange houses have apps where you add your family once, see the fee and rate before you confirm, and download the receipt.

Qatari bank apps: the option many workers forget

Because Qatar pays most salaries into bank accounts, many workers already hold a Qatari bank card. Several banks now have direct links to Nepal:

  • QIB Direct Remit added Nepal in June 2024 through a partnership with Nabil Bank. It runs in the QIB Mobile and QIB Lite apps, and QIB’s standard Direct Remit limit for mass-segment customers is QR 50,000.
  • Commercial Bank (CBQ) offers fast transfers to Nepal from its mobile and internet banking.
  • Doha Bank has a remittance agreement with Global IME Bank.

A bank app is not automatically cheaper than an exchange house — it depends on that day’s rate. But it is worth quoting, because you can send at midnight on your day off without queueing. If you are paying out to cash pickup, read our comparison of IME vs Western Union rates first — it shows how to compare what your family actually collects at the counter.

Two myths that cost Qatar senders money

Myth 1: “I can send to Nepal with Fawran”

Fawran is Qatar Central Bank’s instant payment service, and it works only inside Qatar — bank to bank, by mobile number or alias, up to a limit your bank sets (QCB caps it at QR 50,000). It is great for paying a friend or moving money between your own accounts, but it cannot deliver rupees to Nepal.

Myth 2: “Wise is the cheapest from Qatar”

Some comparison blogs rank Wise first for QAR to NPR. At the time of writing, Wise’s own QAR to NPR converter states that it cannot send money between these two currencies. Use its converter as a free mid-market benchmark — then send through a provider that actually serves this corridor.

How the money actually moves from Qatar to Nepal

Knowing the route tells you where a delayed transfer is stuck.

STEP 1 →

You pay in QAR

Cash at a branch, or your Qatari debit card or bank account in an app.

STEP 2 →

Checks in Qatar

The licensed exchange house or bank checks your QID and screens the payment. New beneficiaries and unusual amounts get paused here.

STEP 3 →

QAR becomes NPR

The sender converts and instructs its partner in Nepal — a bank or an NRB-licensed remittance company — to pay out.

STEP 4

Payout in Nepal

The bank credits the account, the wallet is loaded, or cash is released at an agent.

If the money has left your account in Qatar but not arrived, the hold is almost always at Step 2 (ID or beneficiary check) or Step 4 (name mismatch or a Nepali holiday) — rarely in between.

How to send money from Qatar to Nepal: step by step

  1. Check the benchmark rate. Look up the live QAR/NPR mid-market rate on Google or a converter so you know what “good” looks like today.
  2. Quote the same amount on two providers — for example one exchange-house app and your bank’s app — and write down the exact NPR each promises. Ignore the fee banner.
  3. Have your Qatar ID (QID) ready. It is required at licensed exchange houses and for app registration. Bigger-than-usual transfers may need a salary certificate or bank statement.
  4. Add your recipient exactly as their bank or wallet records them (checklist below). New beneficiaries may have a short cooling-off period before the first transfer.
  5. Choose the payout — bank deposit, wallet or cash pickup.
  6. Pay, confirm and save the receipt with its reference number (PIN or MTCN for cash pickup).
  7. Ask your family to confirm receipt. Keep that confirmation and the receipt — it is your proof of income sent home through formal channels.

Recipient details: get these exactly right

For a bank deposit

  • Full legal name exactly as it appears on the bank account.
  • Bank name and branch. For a SWIFT wire you will also need the SWIFT code — our verified list of Nepal bank SWIFT codes saves a call home.
  • Account number.
  • Mobile number and address for payout confirmation.

For a wallet (eSewa, Khalti, IME Pay)

  • The mobile number registered to the wallet — this is the wallet ID.
  • The name exactly as registered in the wallet’s KYC. Make sure the wallet is fully verified, because unverified wallets have low limits.

For cash pickup

  • The name exactly as on the recipient’s citizenship certificate or other photo ID.
  • The reference number (PIN), sent to your family only by a call or message you trust.

The name-matching trap

Nepali names are often written differently across documents — “Kumari” on the citizenship certificate but not at the bank, Shrestha spelled two ways, a husband’s surname added after marriage. Payout partners match names closely, and a mismatch means the transfer is held or returned. Ask your family to photograph their passbook or wallet profile and copy the name from that, not from memory.

Limits, documents and the rules on both sides

In Qatar

  • Use only licensed providers. Money transfer in Qatar runs through banks and exchange houses supervised by Qatar Central Bank. Your QID is needed to send.
  • Limits come from the provider, not a national cap. Each exchange house and bank sets its own per-transaction and monthly limits, often tied to your verification level. QIB, for example, sets QR 50,000 for its mass-segment Direct Remit customers.
  • Source of funds. If you suddenly send far more than your salary suggests, expect a request for a salary certificate, bank statement or proof of sale. That is standard anti-money-laundering practice, not an accusation.

In Nepal

  • Inward remittance is welcome. Nepal Rastra Bank licenses the banks and remittance companies that pay out, and NRB publishes the list of licensed money transfer companies.
  • Keep your labour permit current. Working in Qatar on a valid permit protects you and keeps your record clean when you return — see our Shram Swikriti renewal guide.
  • The corridor is mostly one-way. Sending money from Nepal back out of the country is tightly controlled by NRB. Keep proof of every inward transfer.

Is money sent from Qatar to Nepal taxed?

In Qatar: there is no personal income tax on salaries and no tax on sending money abroad. Unlike the United States, which introduced a 1% tax on cash-funded remittances in 2026 (see our USA to Nepal guide), Qatar adds nothing on top of the provider’s fee and rate.

In Nepal: family remittance received through formal channels is not taxed when it arrives. What the money later earns — fixed deposit interest, dividends, rent — is taxed in Nepal in the normal way.

General information, not tax or legal advice. Large property or business transfers can raise extra questions — confirm with a professional before moving big amounts.

Timing: payday queues, weekends and festivals

Skip the salary-Friday queue

Most salaries land in bank accounts around the end of the month, and the first Friday after payday is when exchange-house branches are busiest. An app transfer on a weekday evening avoids the queue — and the temptation to pay a higher counter fee just to get it done.

Mind the Saturday gap

Nepal is 2 hours 45 minutes ahead of Qatar. Qatar’s weekend is Friday–Saturday, and Saturday is Nepal’s weekly holiday. Wallet and instant bank payouts still work, but an ordinary bank deposit sent on Saturday may wait until Sunday in Nepal.

Send a week before Dashain, Tihar and Chhath

Volumes spike before big festivals and Nepali banks close for several days. Sending early means your family has money in hand rather than a “processing” screen.

Why hundi is a bad trade, even when the rate looks better

This is not an abstract problem. On 24 October 2026 the Embassy of Nepal in Doha and Nepal Rastra Bank held a programme on remittances, hundi and financial inclusion. Nepali workers there asked NRB to cut transfer fees and simplify formal channels; NRB’s deputy governor said the central bank would consider their suggestions, and the acting ambassador urged everyone to send only through formal, secure channels.

Informal agents in camps and shops sometimes offer a few paisa more per riyal because they work outside the licensed system. The saving is small. The risk is not:

  • No recourse if the money disappears — no regulator in Qatar or Nepal can help you.
  • Hundi breaches Nepal’s foreign exchange law, and both senders and receivers can be caught up in investigations. Nepal is also drafting a new foreign exchange law with clearer rules on informal remittance.
  • No receipt, so no proof of earnings sent home when you later apply for a loan, buy land or need a record of your income.
  • Every riyal sent informally weakens Nepal’s foreign exchange reserves — the same reserves that keep the rupee stable for your family.

Sending from another country too?

Many Nepali families receive money from more than one country. Our pillar guide on how to send money to Nepal from every country compares the Gulf, Malaysia, Korea, Japan and Western countries side by side. For specific corridors, see the Canada to Nepal guide, the UK to Nepal money transfer guide and the Australia to Nepal guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to send money from Qatar to Nepal?

A licensed exchange-house app or a Qatari bank’s direct-remit service, paid into a Nepali bank account or verified wallet, is usually cheapest. Compare providers on the NPR amount your family receives, and send one larger transfer a month rather than several small ones, because most fees in Qatar are flat.

What is the QAR to NPR rate today?

On 22 October 2026 the open-market rate was about 41.83 NPR per riyal and the Nepal Rastra Bank selling rate was 41.55. The rate changes daily, so check a live converter and your provider’s quote before you send.

How long does a transfer from Qatar to Nepal take?

Wallet payouts and cash pickup usually arrive within minutes, and many bank deposits arrive the same day. SWIFT wires take one to three business days. Ordinary bank deposits sent during Nepal’s Saturday holiday may wait until Sunday.

Can I send money from Qatar directly to eSewa?

Yes. eSewa Money Transfer works with Qatari exchange houses including Al Dar and Unimoni, and several other providers can load eSewa, Khalti or IME Pay wallets using the registered mobile number. Make sure the wallet is fully verified.

How much money can I send from Qatar to Nepal?

There is no single national cap for normal transfers; each bank and exchange house sets its own limits based on your verification. QIB’s Direct Remit, for example, allows up to QR 50,000 for mass-segment customers. Large or unusual amounts may need proof of income.

Can I use Fawran to send money to Nepal?

No. Fawran is Qatar Central Bank’s instant payment service for transfers within Qatar only. To send to Nepal, use an exchange house, a bank’s international or direct-remit service, or a licensed remittance app.

Do I pay tax on money I send from Qatar to Nepal?

No. Qatar has no personal income tax and no remittance tax, and family remittance received in Nepal through formal channels is not taxed on arrival. Interest or other income the money earns later in Nepal is taxed normally.

Is hundi legal for sending money from Qatar to Nepal?

No. Hundi breaches Nepal’s foreign exchange law, gives you no recourse if money is lost, and leaves no proof of the income you sent home. Use licensed banks and exchange houses only.

The bottom line

Your riyals are worth more rupees in 2026 than at any time in the last few years. Don’t give that gain away through a flat fee on four small transfers or a bank wire you never needed.

Before your next transfer: check the live QAR/NPR rate, quote the same amount on one exchange-house app and your bank’s app, send once on payday instead of weekly, pay into a verified wallet or bank account, and copy your family’s name from their passbook rather than memory.
