Remitly vs Wise for Nepal (2026): Which Gets Your Family More Rupees?
Updated 25 October 2026 · Data checked against Wise and Remitly’s own pages · Not financial advice
If you live in the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Japan or Europe and send money home, you have almost certainly been told to “just use Wise” by one friend and “Remitly is cheaper” by another. Both can be right — on different days, for different amounts, and for different families in Nepal.
This guide compares Remitly vs Wise for Nepal the way your family actually experiences it: how many Nepali rupees land, how fast, and whether they arrive in a bank account, an eSewa wallet or as cash. If you want the bigger picture of every option (IME, banks, Western Union and more), start with our complete guide to sending money to Nepal.
Quick verdict
- Choose Remitly if your family needs eSewa or cash pickup, you send from the UAE, or you send regular amounts of USD 500 or more from the USA (Remitly’s fee was USD 0 at that level in its July 2026 test).
- Choose Wise if the money goes into a Nepali bank account, you want the mid-market rate with a fixed, visible fee, or you already hold money in a Wise balance (the cheapest way to fund a Wise transfer).
- Always compare the final NPR amount on both apps on the day you send. The winner changes with the rate.

How Remitly and Wise Really Charge You
Every money transfer has two costs: the fee you see and the exchange-rate margin you often do not. The mid-market rate is the “real” rate you see on Google. Any rate worse than that is a hidden charge. Remitly and Wise put their profit in different places, and that is the whole story of this comparison.
Wise: real rate, visible fee
Wise converts at the mid-market rate and charges a fee that shows up as a separate line. That fee gets proportionally cheaper as you send more. On the US route in July 2026, it worked out to about 1.56% on USD 500, falling to about 1.20% on USD 5,000. Wise’s own US page also says that paying from money already in your Wise balance is the cheapest way to fund a transfer, with a bank transfer close behind.
Remitly: tiny fee, margin in the rate
Remitly usually charges little or nothing as a fee. From the US, bank-funded transfers of USD 500 or more had a USD 0 fee in July 2026. From Australia, Remitly currently lists AUD 0.99 for bank deposit or mobile wallet and AUD 3.99 for cash pickup. Its profit sits in the exchange rate: in the same US test, Remitly’s rate was 152.67 NPR per dollar against Wise’s 153.99 — a margin of roughly 0.85%.
Total cost as a % of what you send (USD to NPR, bank-funded)
Calculated by us from fees and rates captured on 21 July 2026. Remitly = rate margin only (fee was USD 0). Wise = fee only (mid-market rate).
Wise
USD 500
USD 1,000
USD 2,000
USD 5,000
Shorter bar = cheaper. The gap narrows as the amount grows, because Wise’s fee scales down while Remitly’s margin stays proportional.
Why this matters
Wise’s fee is published and predictable. Remitly’s margin is not fixed — it can move up or down day to day. That is why a comparison from July can flip by October. The only reliable test is the “recipient gets” figure on both apps, entered for the same amount, on the same day.
Real Numbers: How Much NPR Arrives from the USA?
The most detailed public test of this route is Remitly’s own, published on its blog with figures captured on 21 July 2026 (bank-funded, bank deposit in Nepal). We have re-used those figures and added the last column ourselves to show where the money went. Keep in mind it is a provider testing itself against a competitor.
| You pay | Wise fee | NPR via Remitly | NPR via Wise | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USD 500 | USD 7.80 | 76,334.55 | 75,791 | +544 Remitly |
| USD 1,000 | USD 13.82 | 152,669.09 | 151,857 | +812 Remitly |
| USD 2,000 | USD 25.87 | 305,338.19 | 303,986 | +1,352 Remitly |
| USD 5,000 | USD 59.76 | 763,345.47 | 760,723 | +2,622 Remitly |
On a USD 1,000 transfer, Wise’s fee cost your family about NPR 2,128, while Remitly’s weaker rate cost about NPR 1,316. Net result: roughly NPR 812 more with Remitly that day — about the price of a week of vegetables in Kathmandu, not a life-changing gap.
Three things the provider’s own test does not tell you:
- Below USD 500, Remitly charged USD 1.99. On a USD 200 send, that fee alone is about 1% on top of the rate margin, so small senders should compare carefully.
- Rates move. When we checked Wise on 25 October 2026, its mid-market rate was about 151.88 NPR per dollar — very different from July’s 153.99. Remitly’s margin on any given day is unknown until you quote.
- Funding method changes the price. Card payments cost more on both apps than bank or balance funding.
The first-transfer promo trap
Remitly advertises no fee on your first transfer plus a boosted “promotional” rate on the first 1,000 units you send (USD 1,000 from the US, AUD 1,000 from Australia). That first quote can look unbeatable. It is a real saving — but it is a one-off. Judge Remitly on your second transfer quote, because that is the price you will pay every month after.
How Your Family Receives the Money in Nepal
This is where most comparisons skip ahead, and where the choice is often already made for you. Ask the person receiving the money one question first: “Do you want it in the bank, in eSewa, or in cash?”
Bank deposit
Remitly ✓ · Wise ✓
Needs full name, bank, branch and a 9–20 digit account number. Best for larger amounts and savings.
eSewa wallet
Remitly ✓ · Wise ✗
Lands in the recipient’s eSewa account, ready for bills, top-ups and QR payments. Great for parents who rarely visit a bank.
Cash pickup
Remitly ✓ · Wise ✗
Collected with ID at partner agents such as eSewa Remit, Global IME or City Express. Useful in villages without easy bank access.

If your family does not have a bank account yet, it is now possible to open one with video KYC. See our guide on how to open a bank account in Nepal from abroad — it also covers NRN accounts if you want an account in your own name.

Which Countries Can You Send From?
Almost every comparison online assumes you live in the USA. Most Nepalis abroad do not. Here is how the two services cover the countries where Nepali workers and students actually live.
| Sending from | Remitly | Wise |
|---|---|---|
| USA | ✓ | ✓ |
| United Kingdom | ✓ | ✓ |
| Australia | ✓ | ✓ |
| Canada | ✓ | ✓ |
| Japan | ✓ | Check in app |
| EU countries (Germany, Portugal, Poland, etc.) | ✓ most | ✓ |
| UAE | ✓ | ✗ NPR not launched yet |
| Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait | ✗ | ✗ |
| Malaysia | ✗ | Check in app |
| South Korea | ✗ | Check in app |
Remitly coverage is based on its published list of sending countries. Wise UAE status is from Wise’s UAE Nepal page. “Check in app” means we could not confirm a live NPR route; open the app with your local account before relying on it.
If you work in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia or Korea, the honest answer is that neither app is your main tool — licensed local exchange houses and Nepali remit partners are. Our country-by-country money transfer guide covers those routes.

Speed, Limits and Restrictions
Speed
- Wise: once Wise has your money and converts it, NPR reaches banks that support real-time transfers within about 15 minutes. Other banks usually get it the same working day, though conversion can take up to 2 working days. A plain bank-transfer top-up from the US was estimated at around 5 hours when we checked.
- Remitly: its stated range for the US to Nepal is instant to 3–6 business days, depending on payment and delivery method. eSewa and cash pickup tend to be the fastest; Economy-speed bank-funded transfers are the slowest. Remitly also promises to refund its fee if a transfer is late.
Limits
- Wise to Nepal: up to NPR 1,000,000 per transfer and NPR 2,000,000 per day per recipient and per sender.
- Remitly: limits are set per 24 hours, 30 days and 180 days, and depend on your sending country and verification. New US accounts are widely reported to start around USD 2,999 per 24 hours; you can raise this by submitting documents.
Restrictions worth knowing
- Wise cannot send NPR to businesses in Nepal — only personal accounts. Paying a college, landlord company or supplier? Check before you send.
- Neither service lets you send money out of Nepal in NPR. These are inbound-only routes.
- Remitly payout options can vary by recipient location and partner.
US Senders: The 1% Remittance Tax
Since 1 January 2026, the US charges a 1% excise tax on remittances paid for with cash, money orders or cashier’s checks. Transfers funded from a US bank account or a US-issued debit or credit card are exempt. In practice, a normal Wise or Remitly transfer paid from your bank account or card is not taxed. The tax only bites if you walk into an agent with cash. Our USA to Nepal guide explains the rule and the cheapest funding methods in more detail.
Is It Safe? Regulation and Trust
Both are licensed, mainstream money transfer companies. Wise is a registered Money Services Business with FinCEN in the US and is authorised by the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority. It holds about a 4.3 out of 5 rating on Trustpilot from over 300,000 reviews. Remitly is licensed in the countries it operates in and rates 4.9 on the App Store and 4.8 on Google Play from millions of ratings.
More importantly for Nepal: both are formal channels. Money arrives through Nepali banks and licensed remit companies, so it counts as official remittance. Using informal hundi to save a few rupees puts your money, and sometimes your family, at legal risk.
Remitly vs Wise: Which Should You Choose?
Follow the questions in order. The first one that applies to you usually decides it.
Three common situations
Monthly support for parents
Parents in Pokhara use eSewa for electricity, phone top-ups and the market. Remitly to eSewa means no trip to the bank at all.
Student in the UK paying a home loan
Large monthly transfer into the family’s own bank account. Quote both; Wise often wins as amounts rise because its fee shrinks.
Worker in Dubai
Wise cannot send NPR from the UAE yet. Remitly, or a local exchange house, are the realistic choices.
How to Get the Most Rupees on Either App
- Compare “recipient gets”, not the rate. Enter the same amount and the same payment method on both apps.
- Fund from a bank, not a card. Card funding is more expensive on both services.
- Send less often, in bigger amounts. Fewer, larger transfers cut Wise’s percentage fee and avoid Remitly’s small-amount fee.
- Use the promo, then re-check. Take Remitly’s first-transfer offer, but compare honestly from the second transfer onwards.
- Watch the USD to NPR trend. The rupee moved by around 2 per dollar between July and October 2026 — bigger than the gap between the two apps.
- Lock the rate when it is good. Wise lets you lock a rate for a set window while your payment arrives.
Mistakes That Delay Transfers to Nepal
- Name mismatch. The recipient name must match the bank account or citizenship ID exactly, including middle names.
- Wrong account length. Nepali account numbers are 9–20 digits. A missing digit sends money into limbo.
- Sending to a company account with Wise. It will be rejected; Wise pays personal accounts only.
- Bank holidays in Nepal. Around Dashain and Tihar, non-real-time bank credits can wait for the next working day. Send a few days early.
- Unverified eSewa wallets. Ask the recipient to complete eSewa KYC before you send to their wallet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Remitly or Wise cheaper for sending money to Nepal?
It depends on the day and the amount. In a July 2026 US test, Remitly delivered more NPR on every amount from USD 500 to USD 5,000 because its fee was zero, even though Wise had the better exchange rate. Rates change daily, so compare the final NPR amount on both apps before each transfer.
Can I send money to eSewa with Wise?
No. Wise only pays out to bank accounts in Nepal. To send directly to an eSewa wallet, use Remitly or another eSewa partner.
Does Wise offer cash pickup in Nepal?
No. Wise has no cash pickup in Nepal. Remitly offers cash pickup through partners such as eSewa Remit, Global IME and City Express.
How long does Wise take to send money to Nepal?
After Wise receives and converts your money, it reaches real-time-enabled Nepali banks within about 15 minutes. Other banks usually receive it the same working day, though conversion can take up to two working days.
What is the maximum I can send to Nepal with Wise?
Up to NPR 1,000,000 per transfer, with a daily limit of NPR 2,000,000 per recipient and per sender.
Can I use Wise to send money to Nepal from Dubai?
Not yet. Wise’s UAE site lists Nepal as a route it is still working on. Remitly does support sending from the UAE to Nepal.
Do I pay the 1% US remittance tax on Remitly or Wise?
Not if you fund the transfer from a US bank account or a US-issued debit or credit card. The tax only applies to transfers paid with cash, money orders or cashier’s checks.
Is Remitly’s first-transfer rate the real price?
No. New customers get a promotional rate on the first transfer, capped at around 1,000 units of the sending currency, plus no fee. Later transfers use the normal rate and fees, so compare using a second-transfer quote.
Final Verdict
For most families in Nepal, the deciding factor is not a few hundred rupees — it is how the money needs to arrive. Remitly is the more flexible choice for Nepal because it reaches eSewa wallets and cash counters and works from the UAE. Wise is the more transparent choice for bank-to-bank transfers, with a published fee and the real exchange rate.
On pure price, the two are close enough that the winner changes with the rupee. Keep both apps, quote both before you send, and pick the bigger NPR number.
