Western Union Nepal fees and limits 2026 explained

Western Union Nepal Fees and Limits (2026): Real Costs, Sending Caps & What Your Family Can Collect

Last updated: 27 October 2026 · Data: World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide (Q3 2025), Western Union country pages, Nabil Bank, Nepal Rastra Bank rates of 19 October 2026

Quick answer

Western Union’s fee is only part of the cost — the bigger part is usually hidden in the exchange rate. In the latest World Bank survey, the total cost of sending about USD 500 to Nepal with Western Union ranged from 0.89% (online, bank-funded, from the UAE) to 5.35% (cash at a US agent), and US senders who pay in cash now owe an extra 1% federal remittance tax. Sending limits depend on your country: up to USD 5,000 per transfer from the US, £8,000 from the UK and CAD 7,500 cash-to-cash from Canada. On the Nepal side, a cash pickup at Nabil Bank counters is capped at NPR 1,00,000 per payment, so larger amounts should go straight into a bank account.

Key takeaways

  • How you pay decides the price. The same company charged a 0.46% exchange-rate margin online from the UAE but 1.19% at a UAE counter, and 3.75% for cash at a US agent.
  • US cash senders pay twice. On a USD 500 cash transfer, an $8 fee, a 3.75% rate margin and the new 1% tax add up to about 6.35% — roughly NPR 4,800 your family never sees.
  • Limits are set per country, not per company. Canada allows CAD 7,500 for cash-to-cash but only CAD 999 bank-to-bank; the UK allows £8,000; Italy and France allow €5,000 after ID checks.
  • The NPR 1 lakh cash ceiling bites early. At today’s rates it is reached at about USD 660, £495 or AED 2,420. Above that, choose bank deposit.
  • Free first transfer is not the cheapest transfer. Western Union says it earns money from currency exchange, so always compare the rupees received, not the fee.

How Western Union charges you: the two costs in every transfer

Every Western Union transfer to Nepal has a visible cost and an invisible one. The transfer fee is printed on the receipt. The exchange-rate margin is the gap between the real market rate and the NPR rate Western Union gives you. The World Bank adds the two together to get the total cost, and that is the only number worth comparing.

The formula that cuts through the marketing

Real cost = fee + (amount × margin %). A $0 fee with a 3% margin on $500 costs you $15. A $5 fee with a 0.5% margin costs you $7.50. The "free" one is twice as expensive.

Western Union to Nepal fees by country (independent data)

Western Union’s own website only shows a live quote after you type an amount, and most review sites copy generic numbers. The figures below come from the World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide survey, where researchers record the real fee and rate for each provider. The latest round for Nepal was collected in August and September 2025. Rates have moved since, but each channel’s margin changes far more slowly than the rate itself.

What the data tells you

  • From the UAE, Western Union online is genuinely cheap. At 0.89% on AED 1,835 it was well under the corridor average. The same company at a counter cost more than twice as much.
  • From the US, Western Union cash is among the most expensive ways to send. The only Western Union product the survey could price was cash at an agent, and its 3.75% margin was higher than most app-based options in the same round.
  • Card payments from Qatar are the outlier. A 3.81% margin plus a QAR 20 fee made it the costliest Western Union product surveyed outside the US. If you are in Qatar, compare it with a local exchange house before you send.
  • Small transfers suffer most. A fixed fee on USD 200 weighs almost twice as much as on USD 500, which is why the left column is always worse.

Sending from the USA? The 1% cash tax

Since 1 January 2026, a 1% US federal excise tax applies when you fund an international transfer with cash, a money order or a cashier’s check. Western Union collects it at the counter. It does not apply when you pay from a bank account or with a US debit or credit card, and your family in Nepal pays nothing extra.

Simple fix: start the transfer in the Western Union app and pay from your bank account. On a monthly USD 1,000 transfer, that alone saves $120 a year in tax. Our USA to Nepal money transfer guide compares the tax-free options.

Western Union sending limits to Nepal by country

Western Union does not have one global limit. Each country’s office sets its own caps, and they change with your payment method and how well your identity is verified. These are the Nepal-specific limits Western Union publishes on its country pages:

Sending fromPublished limit to Nepal≈ NPR (19 Oct 2026)Watch out for

France€1,000 per transfer unverified; €5,000 verified8.52 lakh (verified)Same verification rule
Australia, UAE, GulfSet per payment method and partner—Card limits are lower than bank-funded limits; the app shows your cap before you pay

If you hit a cap, the fix is usually verification, not splitting the money. Western Union’s US help pages say verified customers can be approved for much higher limits — up to $50,000 for some destinations and payment methods. Splitting one payment into several small ones means paying the fixed fee several times.

Receiving limits in Nepal: the part most guides skip

Even when Western Union lets you send a large amount, the money still has to be paid out under Nepali rules. Here is what applies on the receiving side.

1. Cash pickup: NPR 1,00,000 per payment

Nabil Bank, Western Union’s partner bank in Nepal for about two decades, states that the limit for a cash payment against an MTCN is NPR 1,00,000. Treat that as your working ceiling and confirm with the agent if you use another counter. Above that, the money should be credited to a bank account.

Calculated at NRB buying rates on 19 October 2026, before any margin. With a typical margin, the threshold is slightly higher in your currency.

2. Bank account deposit: the route for larger sums

Western Union’s account-credit service through Nabil Bank can pay into accounts at any bank or financial institution in Nepal, and the receiver does not need to visit a counter. Under Nepal Rastra Bank rules, a licensed remittance company can deposit up to Rs 25 lakh per day into a beneficiary’s account (raised from Rs 20 lakh in October 2025). If your family does not have an account yet, our guide on opening a bank account in Nepal from abroad covers the video-KYC route, and the Nepal bank SWIFT code list helps you enter bank details correctly.

3. Mobile wallets: convenient, but capped

Western Union lists eSewa, Khalti, Prabhu Pay, Namaste Pay, CellPay and several other wallets as payout partners in Nepal. Wallets suit small, regular amounts. eSewa’s published limits cap a verified wallet balance at NPR 5 lakh, and Western Union Canada caps card-to-wallet transfers at CAD 400. The receiver must have a KYC-verified wallet, or the credit can be held.

4. Two Nepali rules that affect large transfers

  • Rs 5 lakh cash rule: since January 2026, cash transactions of Rs 5 lakh or more must go through a bank or banking instrument. Large payouts are therefore made to accounts, not in notes.
  • Rs 10 lakh reporting threshold: banks report inward remittance of Rs 10 lakh or more in one customer’s name in a day to Nepal’s Financial Intelligence Unit. Legal money is fine — just keep proof of where it came from.

7 ways to pay less with Western Union

  1. Pay from your bank account, online. In every corridor where both were surveyed, bank-funded online transfers beat counter transfers.
  2. Avoid credit cards. Western Union warns that your card issuer may treat the payment as a cash advance, adding a fee and interest from day one.
  3. In the US, never pay in cash. You avoid the 1% tax and the weakest rate in one move.
  4. Use the first-transfer offer, then re-check. The $0 fee for new US customers is real, but it does not apply to credit card payments and does not fix a weak rate.
  5. Send less often, in larger amounts. One USD 1,000 transfer pays one fee; four USD 250 transfers pay four.
  6. Compare against the NRB rate. Check our USD to NPR remittance rate today page; if Western Union’s rate is more than about 1% below it, look elsewhere.
  7. Verify your ID before a big transfer. It raises your limits and avoids a held payment at the worst moment.

The Kathmandu-side reality check

Most delays we hear about in Nepal are not caused by Western Union’s network but by small details: a name spelled differently from the citizenship certificate, an MTCN shared with one digit wrong, or a transfer above NPR 1 lakh sent for cash pickup. Before you press send, read the receiver’s name off their ID, send the 10-digit MTCN in writing, and choose bank deposit for anything large.

Our verdict: is Western Union good for sending money to Nepal?

Where it is strong

  • Cheap online bank-funded transfers from the UAE and Malaysia
  • Huge payout reach: thousands of agents, every Nepali bank, major wallets
  • Cash ready in minutes for families without a bank account
  • MTCN tracking and a long-standing partner bank in Nepal

Where it is weak

  • Expensive for cash at US agents, plus the 1% tax
  • Costly card transfers from Qatar (3.81% margin)
  • Odd limits in some countries, such as CAD 999 bank-to-bank
  • Cash payout capped at NPR 1 lakh in Nepal

Bottom line: Western Union is a good choice when you send online from a bank account and want flexible payout for your family. It is a poor choice for cash transfers from the US or card transfers from Qatar. If you send from the Gulf, read our IME vs Western Union rates comparison before you choose.

How your family collects the money in Nepal

  1. Share the MTCN. The 10-digit Money Transfer Control Number is on your receipt or in the app.
  2. Visit an agent with valid ID. Citizenship certificate, passport, driving licence, voter ID or other government ID.
  3. Give the transfer details. Nabil Bank asks for the receiver’s name, address and contact, relationship with the sender, purpose of the money and the expected amount.
  4. Collect cash or a credit. Up to NPR 1 lakh in cash; bank and wallet payouts land automatically.

If the receiver lives abroad part of the year, an NRN card can make bank paperwork in Nepal easier.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Western Union charge to send money to Nepal?

It depends on the country and payment method. In the latest World Bank survey, fees ranged from AED 7.88 online in the UAE to $8 for cash at a US agent, and the total cost including the exchange-rate margin ranged from about 0.9% to 5.4% on USD 500.

What is the Western Union limit to Nepal?

Western Union publishes up to $5,000 per online transfer from the US, £8,000 from the UK, CAD 7,500 cash-to-cash from Canada and €5,000 from Italy or France after ID verification. Limits are lower for unverified profiles and card payments.

How much cash can be received from Western Union in Nepal?

Nabil Bank, Western Union’s partner in Nepal, sets the cash payment limit at NPR 1,00,000 per transfer. Larger amounts should be sent to a bank account.

Does the receiver pay any fee in Nepal?

No. The sender pays the transfer fee. The receiver gets the rupee amount shown on the receipt, although wallet providers may charge for later cash-out.

Is there a tax on Western Union transfers from the USA to Nepal?

Yes, if you pay with cash, a money order or a cashier’s check: a 1% US federal excise tax applies from 1 January 2026. Bank-funded and US card-funded transfers are exempt.

Can Western Union send money to eSewa or Khalti?

Yes. Western Union lists eSewa, Khalti, Prabhu Pay and several other wallets as payout partners in Nepal. The wallet must be KYC-verified, and wallet balance limits apply.

How long does Western Union take to reach Nepal?

Cash pickup and wallet transfers usually arrive within minutes. Bank deposits are often fast but can take one to two business days, and bank-funded cash pickups from Canada can take 7–10 days.

Why is Western Union’s rate lower than the NRB rate?

Western Union states that it makes money from currency exchange, so its NPR rate includes a margin. Compare its rate with Nepal Rastra Bank’s daily buying rate; a gap under about 1% is competitive.

Methodology: Fees, margins and total costs come from the World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide database (Q3 2025 rounds for the US, UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia to Nepal). Worked examples apply those margins to Nepal Rastra Bank buying rates published on 19 October 2026. Sending limits are taken from Western Union’s Nepal pages for each country; the cash payout limit is from Nabil Bank; NRB, cash-transaction and reporting rules are from official notices and national news reports. All figures are estimates — your exact fee and rate are shown before you confirm a transfer.
