Send money from Saudi to Nepal: fast and secure SAR to NPR transfer from a phone app

Short answer

The cheapest way to send money from Saudi to Nepal in 2026 is a SAMA-licensed app or digital wallet — stc pay (stc Bank), urpay, Tahweel Al Rajhi or Enjaz — paying into a Nepali bank account or a verified eSewa wallet. Bank branch counters are usually the most expensive route, even when the fee looks small.

On SAR 1,000, the gap between a good app and a bank counter can be more than NPR 1,600 once you add the fee, the 15% VAT on that fee and the exchange-rate margin.

Compare on one number only: how many rupees reach your family. Nepal Rastra Bank’s buying rate was Rs 40.39 per Saudi riyal on 24–25 October 2026.

The Saudi–Nepal corridor in numbers

Saudi Arabia is one of the biggest sources of the money that keeps Nepali households running. These four figures explain why even a small saving per transfer adds up across the corridor.

Estimates of how many Nepalis currently work in the Kingdom range from about 400,000 to more than 500,000, mostly in construction, services, security and hospitality. In January 2026 the two governments signed their first bilateral labour agreement in Riyadh, aimed at fairer recruitment and salary security — which matters here, because a salary paid into a Saudi bank account or payroll card is the starting point of every formal transfer home.

What most “send money from Saudi to Nepal” pages leave out

Search this phrase and page one is mostly currency converters, a comparison widget that lists a single currency broker, and old news about bank tie-ups. Almost none of them talk about the apps Nepali workers in Saudi actually open on payday. This guide fills those gaps:

  • The real cost of SAR 1,000 sent four different ways, worked out in rupees.
  • The Saudi-side apps and exchange houses — stc pay, urpay, Tahweel Al Rajhi and Enjaz — and how they reach Nepal.
  • The 15% VAT on transfer fees that most fee tables leave out.
  • Why SAR to NPR is really USD to INR in disguise — and what that means for timing.
  • The SAMA monthly limit linked to your salary, and why an expired Iqama stops transfers.
  • Why hundi is a far bigger risk in Saudi Arabia than most workers realise.

SAR to NPR in 2026: what the rate has done

The riyal has had a strong year against the rupee. In late October 2025, SAR 1,000 was worth only about NPR 37,350 at the market rate. By mid-September 2026 the same amount reached a ten-year high of about NPR 41,400. On 24–25 October 2026, Nepal Rastra Bank’s buying rate put it at NPR 40,390.

The insight most senders miss: SAR/NPR is really USD/INR

Two fixed pegs sit behind this rate. The Saudi riyal is pegged to the US dollar at 3.75, and the Nepalese rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee at 1.60. So the riyal–rupee rate is simply the dollar–rupee rate divided by 3.75.

Check it yourself: on 25 October NRB’s dollar buying rate was Rs 151.61, and 151.61 ÷ 3.75 = 40.43 — almost exactly the Rs 40.39 riyal rate. If you want to guess where your rupees are heading, watch the US dollar against the Indian rupee, not the news from Riyadh or Kathmandu. Our USD to NPR remittance rate today page tracks that number daily.

The three costs inside every Saudi to Nepal transfer

1. The transfer fee

Most Saudi providers charge a flat fee per transfer. stc Bank, for example, lists SAR 15 for an international transfer to Nepal through its Western Union service. A flat fee hurts small transfers most: SAR 17.25 is 5.75% of a SAR 300 transfer, but only about 1.15% of SAR 1,500.

2. The 15% VAT on that fee

Saudi fee tables are usually printed before VAT. Saudi Arabia charges 15% VAT on the service fee (not on the amount you send), so a SAR 15 fee actually costs SAR 17.25. That is exactly the fee figure the World Bank recorded when it priced SAR 750 transfers from Saudi Arabia to Nepal.

3. The exchange-rate margin

The mid-market rate is the real SAR/NPR rate — around 40.45 on 26 October 2026. Your provider pays out at a lower rate and keeps the difference. A “zero fee” banner has not removed the cost; it has moved it into the rate. Check the margin in ten seconds:

Margin % = (Mid-market rate − Your rate) ÷ Mid-market rate × 100

Example: mid-market is 40.45 and the app offers 39.75. Margin = (40.45 − 39.75) ÷ 40.45 × 100 = 1.73% — about NPR 700 lost on every SAR 1,000, even with a zero fee.

How big are these costs in practice? RemitFinder’s analysis of 178 real Saudi–Nepal transfers across 10 providers over five years found an average total cost of 4.46% on a SAR 750 transfer — but with a range from 1.18% to 14.12%. Mobile-wallet transfers averaged about 3.07%, cash 4.42% and bank-account transfers 5.24%. The cheapest and dearest options on the same day can be more than ten times apart.

Worked example: what SAR 1,000 really lands as in Nepal

The same SAR 1,000 sent four ways on the same day. The mid-market rate is fixed at 1 SAR = 40.45 NPR. The fees include 15% VAT. The provider rates are illustrative of typical margins on this corridor, not quotes from any named company — always check the live quote in the app before you pay.

Two Saudi–Nepal partnerships are worth knowing by name. In 2019 Bank Albilad’s Enjaz division and Global IME Bank launched a direct link, letting families collect at Global IME branches and the wider IME and GME agent network. In 2023 Enjaz and eSewa Money Transfer signed an agreement that lets senders load eSewa wallets directly, with payout through thousands of remit agents and eSewa locations across Nepal.

If your family collects cash rather than using a bank, the agent network matters as much as the rate. Our head-to-head on IME vs Western Union rates shows how to compare what actually lands at the counter.

Which option fits you?

Salary paid into a Saudi bank or payroll card

Start with your own bank’s remittance app (for example Tahweel Al Rajhi for Al Rajhi customers), then compare the rupee amount with one wallet app before you send.

Family in Nepal uses eSewa daily

Choose a channel with direct eSewa loading, such as Enjaz. Money arrives in minutes and can pay school fees, electricity and top-ups straight away.

Parents in a remote village without a bank

Use cash pickup through IME, Global IME or Western Union agents — but check which agent is nearest to your family first.

Large one-off amount (SAR 20,000+)

Get a quote from your bank and a broker, have your salary certificate ready, and send to a bank account in Nepal for a clean paper trail.

How the money moves from Saudi Arabia to Nepal

Knowing the route tells you where a delayed transfer is stuck.

STEP 1 →

You pay in SAR

From your wallet, Saudi bank account, payroll card or in cash at a branch.

STEP 2 →

Checks in Saudi

The SAMA-licensed provider checks your Iqama, your limit and the transfer purpose.

STEP 3 →

SAR becomes NPR

The provider converts at its rate and instructs its licensed partner in Nepal.

STEP 4

Payout in Nepal

A Nepali bank or NRB-licensed remittance company credits the account, loads the wallet or pays cash.

If money has left your wallet but has not arrived, the hold is almost always at Step 2 (Iqama, limit or purpose check) or Step 4 (name mismatch or a Nepali holiday) — not in between.

How to send money from Saudi to Nepal: step by step

  1. Check today’s benchmark — the NRB buying rate or the mid-market SAR/NPR rate — so you can judge any quote.
  2. Quote the same amount in two apps and write down the exact NPR each promises. Ignore the fee banner and remember to add VAT to any fee.
  3. Make sure your Iqama is valid and your app profile is fully verified. Providers must confirm your identity before an international transfer.
  4. Add your recipient exactly as their bank or wallet records them (checklist below).
  5. Choose the payout — bank deposit, eSewa wallet or cash pickup — and select the correct purpose, usually family support.
  6. Confirm and save the receipt with its reference number (often called an MTCN or PIN for cash pickup).
  7. Ask your family to confirm receipt and keep that message. It is your proof of formal remittance later.

Recipient details: get these exactly right

For a bank deposit

  • Full legal name exactly as it appears on the bank account.
  • Bank name and branch. If a Saudi bank asks for a SWIFT code, our verified list of Nepal bank SWIFT codes saves a call home.
  • Account number.
  • Mobile number and address for payout confirmation.

For an eSewa wallet

  • The mobile number registered to the wallet — this is the wallet ID.
  • The name exactly as shown in the wallet’s verified profile.

For cash pickup

  • Name exactly as on the recipient’s citizenship certificate or other photo ID.
  • The reference number from your receipt, which you send to your family privately.

The name-matching trap

Nepali names are often recorded differently on the citizenship certificate, the bank passbook and the wallet — Kumar in one place but not another, Shrestha spelled Srestha. Payout partners match names closely, and a mismatch means the money is held or returned, sometimes weeks later and minus fees. Ask your family to photograph the passbook or eSewa profile and copy the name from that, not from memory.

Limits, Iqama and the rules on both sides

On the Saudi side

  • Use a SAMA-licensed provider only. Banks, wallets and money-transfer companies must be licensed by the Saudi Central Bank. You can check the rules in SAMA’s rulebook for money-transfer providers.
  • Your limit is tied to your salary. SAMA’s rules for licensed transfer centres link an individual’s limit to documented income — commonly summarised as your monthly salary or SAR 50,000 a month, whichever is lower, and up to SAR 500,000 a year where income is proven. Apps may set lower limits of their own.
  • A valid Iqama is required. Providers must verify who you are, so an expired Iqama or an unverified profile usually blocks international transfers until it is renewed.
  • No tax on the amount you send. Saudi Arabia does not tax expat remittances; the 15% VAT applies only to the provider’s fee.
  • Complaints go to SAMA Cares. If a provider does not fix a held or failed transfer, escalate through SAMA Cares.

On the Nepali side

  • Inward remittance is welcome. Nepal Rastra Bank permits and encourages money coming in through licensed banks and remittance companies.
  • Keep your labour permit in order. Workers who return on leave need a renewed permit to fly back; our step-by-step Shram Swikriti renewal online guide covers the FEIMS process. In March 2026 Nepal briefly paused permits for Gulf countries before resuming renewals for Saudi Arabia.
  • Formal remittance builds a record. Bank statements showing regular inward remittance help your family later with loans, land purchases and visa applications.

Payroll card tip

If your employer pays you on a payroll or e-remittance card, check whether your card’s bank offers discounted remittance through its ATMs or app. Al Rajhi, for example, promotes special discounts for transfers made from payroll and e-remittance cards through its ATMs and the Tahweel app. Sending straight from the card avoids withdrawing cash first.

Timing: weekends, time zones and festivals

Saturday is a holiday on both sides

Saudi Arabia’s weekend is Friday–Saturday and Nepal’s weekly holiday is Saturday. Nepal is 2 hours 45 minutes ahead of Riyadh. Wallet and real-time bank payouts work any day, but a bank credit that is not real-time and is sent on Friday evening Saudi time may wait until Sunday in Nepal.

Payday queues are real

Branches and exchange houses get crowded right after salaries land. An app transfer from your room avoids the queue, and you can still compare two quotes in under five minutes.

Send a week before Dashain and Tihar

Remittance volume spikes before the big festivals and Nepali banks close for several days. Sending early means money in hand, not a “processing” screen.

A realistic example from a Riyadh worker

Picture a construction supervisor in Riyadh who sends SAR 1,500 to his wife’s account in Butwal every month. For years he has queued at the same branch counter after payday. Using the typical counter terms above — a SAR 28.75 fee and a 39.40 rate — his wife receives about NPR 59,100.

Switching to a low-margin app paying straight into her bank account (SAR 10 fee, 40.25 rate), she receives about NPR 60,375. That is NPR 1,275 more every month, plus nearly SAR 19 less in fees — together worth more than NPR 24,000 a year.

One more habit helps: he used to send twice a month. Combining into one transfer halves the fee, saving another SAR 200 or so a year on a SAR 17.25 fee.

Illustrative scenario based on the typical margins shown in this guide, not a quote from any provider.

Why hundi is a bad trade, even when the rate looks better

Informal agents in labour camps and Nepali shops sometimes offer a rupee or two more per riyal. That small gain carries large risks on both sides:

  • In Saudi Arabia, money laundering can carry fines of up to SAR 7 million and up to 15 years in prison, and foreigners convicted are deported after serving the sentence. Saudi police have raided and arrested hundi operators collecting money from migrant workers.
  • In Nepal, hundi is prohibited under Section 125 of the National Penal Code, and police have repeatedly arrested operators. Nepal’s grey-listing by the FATF in 2025 has made the crackdown tougher.
  • No recourse if the money disappears — no regulator on either side will help you.
  • No paper trail, so no proof of income for loans, property or visas, and your family’s bank account can be questioned if it receives unexplained deposits.

8 ways to get more rupees from every riyal

  1. Compare “recipient gets”, never the fee alone.
  2. Add 15% VAT to every advertised fee before comparing.
  3. Send once a month, not in small pieces, so a flat fee is spread over more money.
  4. Prefer bank deposit or eSewa over cash pickup when your family can use it.
  5. Use your payroll card or salary bank’s app if it offers discounted remittance.
  6. Watch USD/INR, because it drives SAR/NPR through the two pegs.
  7. Treat promotional rates as one-offs and compare standard rates for regular transfers.
  8. Never use hundi, whatever rate it promises.

Sending from another country too?

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to send money from Saudi to Nepal?

A SAMA-licensed app or wallet such as stc pay, urpay, Tahweel Al Rajhi or Enjaz, paying into a Nepali bank account or verified eSewa wallet, is usually cheapest. Compare the rupee amount your family receives, add 15% VAT to any fee, and avoid bank branch counters for regular transfers.

How much is 1,000 Saudi riyal in Nepali rupees today?

At Nepal Rastra Bank’s buying rate of Rs 40.39 on 24–25 October 2026, SAR 1,000 equals NPR 40,390. Through a remittance app it typically lands as roughly NPR 39,400 to NPR 40,300, depending on the provider’s rate and fee.

How much money can I send from Saudi Arabia to Nepal per month?

SAMA’s rules link your limit to documented income, commonly summarised as your monthly salary or SAR 50,000 a month, whichever is lower, with up to SAR 500,000 a year where income is proven. Individual apps may set lower limits.

Can I send money from Saudi Arabia directly to eSewa?

Yes. Enjaz has a partnership with eSewa Money Transfer that lets senders load eSewa wallets directly, and other providers offer wallet payouts too. Use the wallet’s registered mobile number and make sure the wallet is fully verified.

Do I need a valid Iqama to send money to Nepal?

Yes. Banks and licensed remittance providers in Saudi Arabia must verify your identity, so you need a valid Iqama and a verified profile. An expired Iqama usually blocks international transfers until it is renewed.

How long does a transfer from Saudi Arabia to Nepal take?

Wallet loads, cash pickup and real-time bank deposits usually arrive within minutes. Other bank deposits arrive the same or next Nepali working day, and Saturday is a holiday in both countries.

Is there a tax on sending money from Saudi Arabia to Nepal?

Saudi Arabia does not tax the money you send. Its 15% VAT applies to the provider’s service fee, so a SAR 15 fee costs SAR 17.25. Family support received through formal channels in Nepal is generally not treated as income for the recipient.

Is hundi legal for sending money from Saudi to Nepal?

No. Hundi is prohibited under Nepal’s National Penal Code, and Saudi Arabia punishes money laundering with heavy fines, prison and deportation for foreigners. You also lose all recourse and any proof of income.

The bottom line

The riyal is worth more rupees today than it was a year ago, so your salary already goes further at home. Don’t hand that gain back through a counter margin or an unnoticed fee.

Before your next transfer: check the NRB rate, quote the same amount in two SAMA-licensed apps, add VAT to the fee, send once a month into a bank account or verified eSewa wallet, and copy your family’s name from their passbook rather than memory.
