Education Loan for Abroad Study in Nepal (2026): Interest Rates, NRB Rules, Documents & How to Get Approved
Updated Kartik 2083 (October 2026) · Rates shown are published ranges – always confirm the day’s rate with the bank before you sign.
Nepali families sent about NPR 141 billion abroad for education in FY 2082/83, and most of that money did not come from savings alone. If you have an offer letter from a university in Australia, the UK, Canada, the USA, Japan or Europe, a Nepali bank will lend you most of the cost – as long as your family can pledge land, a building or a fixed deposit. This guide explains exactly how that works in 2026: today’s interest rates (much lower than most guides still claim), how much you can really borrow, the moratorium trap, NOC and foreign-exchange rules, and how to repay from abroad.
Quick answer
An abroad education loan in Nepal is a collateral-backed term loan from a commercial bank. In Kartik 2083, published floating rates start around 5% to 8.6% a year (base rate + premium), fixed-rate options run about 6.75% to 12%, and banks typically lend up to 100% of the course cost but no more than about 80% of the land’s fair market value or 90% of a fixed deposit. You need an offer letter, a cost estimate, an NOC from the Ministry of Education, passports and collateral papers. Most banks let you pay only interest (or nothing, depending on the bank) while you study, then repay in EMIs over up to 10–20 years.

How an Education Loan for Abroad Study Works in Nepal
Unlike India or the US, Nepal has no large unsecured student-loan market. A Nepali “education loan” or “student loan” (the two terms mean the same thing here) is a term loan secured against family property or a deposit. The student is usually the borrower or co-borrower, a parent or close relative is the guarantor, and the bank pays the university directly against its fee invoice.
The loan also does a second job: the bank’s loan sanction letter is commonly used as proof of funds for the student visa. That is why timing matters – you want the sanction letter before you lodge the visa file.

Education Loan Interest Rates in Nepal (Kartik 2083)
Here is the biggest gap in most articles ranking for this keyword: many still say education loans cost “10% to 13%”. That was true in 2080, when bank base rates were above 10%. Base rates have since fallen sharply – Rastriya Banijya Bank’s base rate was 3.83% in Bhadra 2083 – so floating education-loan rates have fallen with them.

Why rates have dropped: the base-rate trend
Every floating education loan is priced as bank base rate + premium. The chart below shows one commercial bank’s base rate at the same point each year. Your EMI follows this line, up or down.
Prime Commercial Bank base rate (%)

Fixed or floating: which should you pick in 2026?
Choose floating if…
- You want the lowest rate today (often 1–3 points cheaper than fixed).
- Your family can absorb an EMI rise if base rates climb again.
- You plan to prepay early once you are earning abroad.
Choose fixed if…
- The EMI must never change (tight family budget).
- You remember 2080, when base rates crossed 10%.
- The fixed term covers most of your repayment years.
On NPR 50 lakh over 10 years, the gap between a 7% and a 9% rate is roughly NPR 5,300 a month (about NPR 58,050 vs NPR 63,340). Ask the bank what happens after the fixed period ends – most loans switch to floating.
How Much Education Loan Can You Get in Nepal?
The loan amount is set by the lower of two numbers: what the course costs, and what your collateral supports. Most competitor pages only quote a headline “maximum”. In practice, the collateral calculation decides the figure.
| Rule | Typical bank practice | Example from a bank |
|---|---|---|
| Share of course cost | 80% to 100% | NIC Asia: up to 100%; ADBL: up to 80% |
| Land / building collateral | Up to ~80% of fair market value | NIC Asia: max 80% of FMV |
| Fixed deposit collateral | Up to ~90% of FD principal | NIC Asia: max 90% |
| Margin (your own share) | 0–10% depending on cost type | Everest: 0% on tuition, min 10% on other costs |
| Loan size range | Need-based | NIC Asia: NPR 3 lakh to 1 crore |
Worked example (illustrative)
A student’s two-year master’s in Australia needs NPR 60 lakh (tuition plus living costs). The family pledges land valued by the bank at NPR 70 lakh.
- Collateral limit: 80% × 70 lakh = NPR 56 lakh
- Course-cost limit: up to NPR 60 lakh
- Loan offered: the lower figure, NPR 56 lakh – the family must cover the remaining NPR 4 lakh or add an FD.
Tip: the bank’s valuation is usually below the price buyers quote you. Get a rough idea of your land area first with our Ropani to square feet converter, then ask the bank for its valuer’s figure before you finalise the university.
What the loan can cover (Everest Bank’s list is typical): admission and tuition fees, exam fees, books and equipment, refundable deposits, thesis or study-tour costs, and boarding and lodging. Some banks also include travel, health cover and living costs of a dependent spouse, inside the overall limit.
Eligibility for an Abroad Education Loan
- Nepali citizen with a valid passport and an admission/offer letter from a recognised institution.
- Age: rules differ. Everest Bank lends to students aged 16–30 (up to 40 for master’s and above); NIC Asia’s borrower must be at least 18 at application.
- Academic record: some banks set a floor – Everest asks for at least 50% in the last qualifying exam.
- Repayment capacity: a regular income source for parents or guarantors (salary, business, rent or remittance).
- Collateral in the name of the student, parents or close relatives, as the bank accepts.
- Clean credit record for borrowers and guarantors – a past default with any bank can block the file.
Documents Required for an Education Loan (Abroad Study)
Student
- Citizenship certificate and passport
- Academic transcripts (SEE onwards)
- Offer / admission letter
- Fee structure and cost estimate
- NOC from the Ministry of Education
- English test score (IELTS/PTE), if used for admission
Guarantor / co-borrower
- Citizenship certificate
- Relationship certificate
- Income proof (salary letter, tax/PAN records, rent deed)
- Net-worth statement, if asked
- Bank statements
Collateral
- Lalpurja (land ownership certificate)
- Blueprint / trace map and char killa
- Latest land-tax receipt
- Building map approval (if a house)
- FD certificate, if pledging a deposit
If you plan to pledge a deposit, compare current fixed deposit interest rates in Nepal – the FD keeps earning while it secures the loan, which narrows the real cost of borrowing.
How to Apply: Step-by-Step Process
- Shortlist 2–3 banks using the rate tables above. Ask each for the premium over base rate, processing fee, moratorium terms and prepayment charges in writing.
- Get a pre-assessment of your collateral. Some banks start the file before the offer letter arrives – Nabil Bank has allowed applications before the offer letter since 2018.
- Secure the offer letter and the university’s cost estimate.
- Apply for the NOC on noc.moest.gov.np (details below).
- Submit the full application with student, guarantor and collateral documents.
- Valuation and legal checks – the bank’s valuer inspects the property and the land registry entry is verified.
- Receive the sanction letter and attach it to your visa application as funds evidence where the embassy accepts it.
- Mortgage registration at the land revenue office (Malpot), then sign the loan agreement.
- Disbursement – tuition goes directly to the university, usually year-wise or semester-wise against invoices.
Nabil Bank opened a dedicated Education Hub in Putalisadak, Kathmandu, in August 2026 for students heading abroad, and its education loan includes a moratorium that defers repayment during study. Other large banks run similar student desks; it is worth asking for one, as they handle the loan, tuition remittance and forex together.
NOC and NRB Foreign-Exchange Rules for Students
No bank can legally send your tuition abroad without the No Objection Certificate, issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. In 2081/82 alone, 123,589 students received one for study in 84 countries.
- Where: fully online at noc.moest.gov.np.
- Fee: NPR 2,000, payable through ConnectIPS, Khalti or eSewa.
- Time: consultancies report about 1–5 working days after verification.
- Exception: study in India does not need an NOC.
Foreign exchange: banks remit tuition against the university’s invoice once the NOC is on file. For cash and passport-based exchange, Nepal Rastra Bank’s revised circular raised the limit for students going to Australia, the USA, Canada and Europe from USD 10,000 to USD 12,000. For card payments abroad, see our guide to the dollar card in Nepal, and for application fees and visa charges paid online, our guide on how to pay online from Nepal.
Order matters: offer letter → NOC → loan sanction → visa → tuition remittance. Applying for the NOC late is the most common reason a sanctioned loan sits idle while the intake deadline passes.
The Moratorium: The Cost Most Guides Skip
A moratorium (grace period) means you do not pay EMIs while you study. It does not mean interest stops. Banks handle it in one of two ways, and the difference is large:
- Interest-only during study: NIC Asia, for example, collects only interest during the moratorium. Everest Bank collects interest monthly or quarterly and starts EMIs one year after the course ends, or one month after you get a job, whichever comes first (max 120 instalments).
- Interest added to the loan: if unpaid interest is capitalised, your principal grows before the first EMI.
| NPR 50 lakh at 8%, 2-year course | Pay interest during study | Interest capitalised |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly payment while studying | ~NPR 33,300 | NPR 0 |
| Principal when EMIs start | NPR 50 lakh | ~NPR 58.6 lakh |
| EMI over 10 years | ~NPR 60,660 | ~NPR 71,150 |
Simplified: assumes the full amount is disbursed on day one. Real loans disburse semester-wise, so interest during study is lower in early months.
If your family can manage the interest during study, paying it keeps the EMI about NPR 10,000 a month lower for the next 10 years.
EMI Table: What You Will Actually Repay
Monthly EMI and total interest over a 10-year (120-month) repayment, after any moratorium:
| Loan | At 6.5% | At 8% | At 10% |
|---|---|---|---|
| NPR 30 lakh | 34,064 / mo interest 10.9 lakh | 36,398 / mo interest 13.7 lakh | 39,645 / mo interest 17.6 lakh |
| NPR 50 lakh | 56,774 / mo interest 18.1 lakh | 60,664 / mo interest 22.8 lakh | 66,075 / mo interest 29.3 lakh |
| NPR 80 lakh | 90,838 / mo interest 29.0 lakh | 97,062 / mo interest 36.5 lakh | 1,05,721 / mo interest 46.9 lakh |
Rule of thumb: every NPR 10 lakh borrowed at 8% for 10 years costs about NPR 12,100 a month. Compare that to the part-time and post-study wages realistic in your destination before you pick the course.
Nepali Bank Loan vs Foreign Lender (No-Collateral Loans)
If your family has no property to pledge, the only realistic “bina dhito” option is an international lender. MPOWER Financing, for example, lends to Nepali students admitted to eligible US and Canadian universities without collateral or a cosigner. The trade-offs:
| Factor | Nepali bank loan | Foreign lender |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral | Required (land, building or FD) | Usually none |
| Currency | NPR | USD / CAD |
| Rate in 2026 | ~5–12% (floating or fixed) | Fixed; typically higher than secured Nepali loans |
| Countries / schools | Any recognised institution with NOC | Only the lender’s approved list (mainly US/Canada) |
| Exchange-rate risk | On tuition, at the time of payment | None if you earn in the same currency |
| Family property at risk | Yes | No |
Why Education Loans Get Rejected (and How to Fix It)
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Land has no proper road access or unclear boundaries | Pledge a different plot, or combine land with an FD |
| Collateral owned by an uncle or other distant relative | Ask which relationships the bank accepts; bring the owner in as guarantor |
| Guarantor income too low or undocumented | Add rent agreements, tax records or a second earning guarantor |
| Existing loan default in the family | Clear or restructure it first; the credit report is checked |
| Weak academic record for the course level | Choose a bank without a marks floor, or a course matching your profile |
| Cost estimate missing living expenses | Ask the university for a full cost-of-attendance letter |
Repaying Your Education Loan from Abroad
Most students repay from their earnings overseas. The cleanest setup:
- Keep the EMI account active and, if needed, set it up remotely – see how to open a bank account in Nepal from abroad.
- Send money only through licensed channels so every transfer is on record – our guide on the cheapest ways to send money to Nepal compares them.
- Track the USD to NPR remittance rate: a stronger dollar lowers the foreign-currency cost of each NPR EMI.
- Prepay when you can. Ask the bank its prepayment charge first; on floating loans it is often low.
- Consider a term life policy assigned to the bank so the family is not left with the debt – compare insurers in our best life insurance in Nepal guide.

Mistakes to Avoid
- Comparing banks on the headline rate only – compare premium over base rate, fees, moratorium treatment and prepayment charges.
- Using old “10–13%” figures to budget; 2026 floating rates are far lower, but they can rise again.
- Borrowing for living costs you could cover from part-time work – every extra lakh adds interest.
- Forgetting that the property stays mortgaged until the last EMI; plan family sales or transfers around it.
- Paying agents to “arrange” a loan. Banks and the NOC portal deal with you directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which bank gives the cheapest education loan in Nepal for abroad study?
For Kartik 2083, Rastriya Banijya Bank published the lowest floating range at 5.01%–6.01%, followed by Machhapuchchhre, Laxmi Sunrise and Prabhu banks starting near 5.9%. Your actual rate depends on collateral and your relationship with the bank.
Can I get an education loan in Nepal without collateral?
Not from Nepali commercial banks for abroad study – they require land, a building or a fixed deposit. International lenders such as MPOWER Financing offer no-collateral loans for selected US and Canadian universities.
How much education loan can I get?
Usually up to 80–100% of the course cost, capped at about 80% of the collateral’s fair market value or 90% of a fixed deposit. NIC Asia, for instance, lends NPR 3 lakh to NPR 1 crore.
Is an NOC required for an education loan?
Yes, for study abroad. Banks need the Ministry of Education’s NOC to release foreign exchange. It costs NPR 2,000 on noc.moest.gov.np. Study in India does not need one.
When do I start repaying?
It depends on the bank’s moratorium. At Everest Bank, EMIs start one year after the course ends or one month after you get a job, whichever is earlier, with interest paid during study. Some banks offer a deferral with interest added to the loan.
How long is the repayment period?
Commonly up to 10 years after the moratorium; some banks allow longer – NIC Asia lists up to 20 years, excluding the moratorium.
Can the loan sanction letter be used for my student visa?
Banks issue the sanction letter partly for this purpose, and many embassies accept a loan from a regulated bank as evidence of funds. Requirements differ by country, so check your embassy’s financial-evidence rules before you lodge.
Should I choose a fixed or floating rate?
Floating is cheaper today because base rates are near historic lows, but it can rise. Fixed costs more upfront and protects your EMI for the fixed period. Choose based on how much EMI change your family can absorb.
Final Word
An education loan for abroad study in Nepal is easier and cheaper to get in 2026 than it was two years ago – but it is still a mortgage on your family’s property. Get your NOC early, compare the premium over base rate rather than the headline rate, understand how interest runs during your moratorium, and borrow only what your expected earnings can repay.
