USD to NPR remittance rate today: US dollar to Nepali rupee rate for sending money to Nepal

USD to NPR Remittance Rate Today (25 October 2026): NRB Rate, Real App Rates & What $1,000 Actually Lands As

By Wilson Shrestha · Updated 25 October 2026 (Kartik 8, 2083) · Rates checked against Nepal Rastra Bank and provider quotes

Quick answer: USD to NPR remittance rate today

  • NRB buying rate: Rs 151.61 per US dollar (Sunday, 25 October 2026)
  • NRB selling rate: Rs 152.21 per US dollar
  • Mid-market rate: about Rs 151.83 (last market close, 23 October)
  • What remittance apps pay to a Nepali bank account: roughly Rs 147.6 to Rs 151.3 per dollar on a $1,000 transfer, depending on the service
  • Record high: Rs 154.62 buying, set on 21 May 2026

If you are sending dollars home from the US, the number Google shows you is not the number your family receives. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) publishes one rate, the market trades at another, and every remittance app sets its own rate below both. On $1,000, the gap between the best and worst service today is more than Rs 3,200, which is a week of groceries for many families in Kathmandu.

This page explains all four rates in plain language, shows what 11 popular services actually pay out, tracks how the dollar has moved in 2026, and gives you a simple checklist to get more rupees on every transfer.

NRB rates are for 25 October 2026 and were unchanged from Saturday. The mid-market figure is the last market close before the weekend. App rates are estimates for a bank-funded transfer to a Nepali bank account; always confirm the live quote in the app before you pay.

Which Rate Actually Applies to Your Remittance?

This is the part most “dollar rate today” pages skip, and it is why people feel cheated when the money lands. There are three rates in play, and only one of them decides how many rupees your family gets.

Step 1

Mid-market rate

≈ Rs 151.83. The “real” rate between banks. Nobody sending $1,000 gets it.

→

Step 2

Provider rate

The app takes a margin (0.6% to 3.3% today) and may add a fee. This is your real rate.

→

Step 3

Rupees received

Amount sent, minus any fee, times the provider rate. Lands in a bank, eSewa or at a cash counter.

When the NRB buying rate matters

The NRB buying rate is the reference for banks in Nepal when they buy foreign currency. It matters directly when dollars arrive as dollars: for example, a SWIFT wire from a US bank into an account in Nepal, or cash dollars brought home and exchanged at a bank counter. In those cases the bank converts at its own buying rate, which normally sits at or very close to NRB’s figure. NRB itself notes that the rates commercial banks quote may differ from its own.

When the provider rate matters (most remittances)

When you use an app such as Remitly, Western Union or MoneyGram, the app converts your dollars before payout and shows the rupee amount up front. That locked figure is all that matters. The NRB rate is useful only as a yardstick: a good app today pays close to Rs 151; a poor one pays several rupees less.

Why can an app pay close to or even above the NRB buying rate?

The NRB buying rate is a reference for counter transactions, not a ceiling for remittance companies. Big transfer companies settle large volumes at wholesale rates, so a competitive app can sit just under the mid-market rate. First-transfer promotions often go above it. That is also why “the NRB rate” alone is never the answer to “how much will my family get.”

USD to NPR Remittance Rates by Provider Today

The table below shows what 11 services would pay out on a $1,000 bank-funded transfer to a Nepali bank account. Figures come from TransferFees.io, which applies each provider’s own recent quote (collected 19 to 20 October 2026) to the 23 October mid-market rate of Rs 151.83. They are ranked by total cost to you (fee plus the margin hidden in the rate).

How to read this: Sendwave pays the most rupees, but its $5 fee is charged on top of your $1,000, so you pay $1,005 in total. Wise uses the true mid-market rate but takes a visible $18.21 fee out of the amount. Remitly comes out cheapest overall because it charges no fee on bank deposits of $500 or more and keeps its margin small. Remitly’s own US page currently lists a standard bank-deposit rate around Rs 150.91 and a $1.99 fee only on transfers under $500.

What $100, $500, $1,000 and $2,000 Land As Today

Most people do not send exactly $1,000, so here are common amounts at four reference points. The “good app” column uses Remitly’s estimated rate; the “expensive app” column uses Xoom’s.

$2,000Rs 303,660Rs 303,220Rs 301,614Rs 295,188

Worked example: a monthly $1,000 transfer from Texas

Imagine a nurse in Dallas who sends $1,000 to her parents’ Global IME Bank account in Pokhara on the first of every month, paid from her US checking account.

  • Through the cheapest app above: about Rs 150,807 a month.
  • Through the most expensive app above: about Rs 147,594, and she pays $4.99 extra.
  • Over a year, the difference is roughly Rs 38,500 in her parents’ account, from the same $12,000.

If she paid in cash at a counter instead of from her bank account, she would also owe the new 1% US remittance tax: $10 on every $1,000, or $120 a year.

How the USD to NPR Rate Has Moved in 2026

The dollar has been strong against the rupee for most of the past year. It set a then-record of Rs 143.50 (buying) in early December 2025, broke Rs 146.81 in late January 2026, and reached its all-time high of Rs 154.62 buying and Rs 155.22 selling on 21 May 2026. In early October it climbed back to about Rs 154.5, before easing to Rs 150.84 on 22 October and recovering slightly to today’s Rs 151.61.

What this means for senders: a dollar sent today buys about Rs 8 more than it did in December 2025, but about Rs 3 less than at the May peak. Over a year, the rate has moved within a band of roughly Rs 11. A single good or bad app choice (up to Rs 3.2 per dollar today) is often worth as much as weeks of waiting for a “better day.”

Why the USD to NPR Rate Changes

1. The Indian rupee peg does most of the work

The Nepali rupee is fixed at Rs 160 per INR 100, and that peg never changes. So the USD to NPR rate is essentially the USD to INR rate multiplied by 1.6. When the Indian rupee weakens against the dollar, the dollar automatically buys more Nepali rupees, even if nothing has happened in Nepal. If you want to guess where the NPR rate is heading, watch USD to INR.

2. NRB publishes a daily reference, not a trading price

NRB fixes buying and selling rates each morning and says they may be revised at any time. The spread between the two is usually about 60 paisa per dollar. When markets are closed, NRB rates can carry over unchanged, as they did from Saturday to Sunday this weekend.

3. Apps reprice during US and global market hours

Remittance companies update their rates throughout the trading day, often several times. Because Nepal is 9 hours 45 minutes ahead of New York (10 hours 45 minutes during US winter time), the rate you see in the evening in the US may differ from what your family sees on the NRB board the next morning in Kathmandu.

4. Remittance flows are huge, but they do not set the rate

Nepal received Rs 2,120.80 billion (about $14.59 billion) in remittances in the first 11 months of fiscal year 2025/26, up 38.2% on the year before, according to NRB. Those inflows support Nepal’s foreign exchange reserves, but because of the INR peg they do not push the dollar rate up or down day to day the way they might in a free-floating currency.

8 Ways to Get a Better USD to NPR Remittance Rate

  1. Compare “recipient gets,” not the fee. A “zero fee” service with a weak rate can cost more than one with a small fee. The only number that matters is the rupee amount your family receives for the dollars you pay.
  2. Fund from your US bank account or US debit card. Since 1 January 2026, transfers paid with cash, a money order or a cashier’s check carry a 1% US federal remittance tax. Bank-account and US card-funded transfers are exempt.
  3. Cross fee thresholds. Remitly, for example, charges $1.99 on bank deposits under $500 and nothing at $500 or more. Sending $500 once can be cheaper than $250 twice.
  4. Treat promo rates as one-off. First-transfer rates above Rs 152 or 153 are real but apply once. Compare the standard rate for your regular transfers.
  5. Choose bank deposit or eSewa over cash pickup when your family can use it. Account payouts are usually priced better and are easier to track.
  6. Watch USD to INR, not rumours. Because of the peg, a weaker Indian rupee means more Nepali rupees per dollar.
  7. Do not chase small moves. A 30-paisa move on $1,000 is Rs 300. Picking the right app is worth ten times that.
  8. Never use hundi. Informal channels may quote a few rupees more, but there is no legal protection if money goes missing, and it can create problems for the recipient’s bank account in Nepal.

Common mistake: comparing your app with the NRB selling rate

Some senders see Rs 152.21 (the NRB selling rate) and think their app is cheating them at Rs 150.8. The selling rate is what banks charge to sell you dollars. For money coming into Nepal, compare with the mid-market or NRB buying rate instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the USD to NPR remittance rate today?

On 25 October 2026, NRB’s buying rate is Rs 151.61 and its selling rate is Rs 152.21 per US dollar. Remittance apps sending to a Nepali bank account are paying roughly Rs 147.6 to Rs 151.3 per dollar on a $1,000 transfer, with the cheapest overall (Remitly) around Rs 150.8 and no fee.

Is the remittance rate the same as the NRB rate?

No. NRB’s rate is an official reference. Each remittance company sets its own rate, usually a little below the mid-market rate, and that rate decides how many rupees your family receives.

How much is $1,000 in Nepali rupees today?

At the mid-market rate, $1,000 is about Rs 151,830. Through a remittance app it typically lands as Rs 147,600 to Rs 151,300 depending on the service, fees and payout method.

What is the highest USD to NPR rate ever?

The record is Rs 154.62 buying and Rs 155.22 selling, set by NRB on 21 May 2026.

Which app gives the best USD to NPR rate?

On recent quotes for $1,000 to a bank account, Remitly and MoneyGram had the lowest total cost at under 0.7%. Sendwave paid the most rupees but adds a $5 fee on top. Rankings change often, so check two or three apps on the day you send.

Do I pay tax when sending money from the US to Nepal?

Only if you pay with cash, a money order or a cashier’s check: those transfers carry a 1% US federal remittance tax since 1 January 2026. Transfers funded from a US bank account or US-issued debit or credit card are exempt. Large gifts may have separate US reporting rules.

Why does the dollar rate in Nepal follow the Indian rupee?

Because the Nepali rupee is pegged at Rs 1.60 per Indian rupee. When the dollar strengthens against the Indian rupee, it strengthens against the Nepali rupee by the same percentage.

The Bottom Line

Today’s official USD to NPR rate is Rs 151.61 buying and Rs 152.21 selling, but your family’s money depends on the app you choose. Pay from your bank account to avoid the 1% US tax, compare the final rupee amount across two or three services, and stop timing the market for a few paisa. On a regular $1,000 transfer, choosing well is worth more than Rs 3,000 every single time.
