Broken Ranks gameplay guide with tips and tricks for new players

Quick answer

Broken Ranks is a free, turn-based MMORPG where every combat round gives you 10 seconds to split 12 action points between attacks and three defense zones (melee, ranged, mental). Never leave a zone at 0 against an enemy that uses it, put points into accuracy rather than extra attacks, follow the story quests to level 10, then mix repeatable tasks with group instances. Resting was replaced by passive regeneration in July 2026, and the Android version launches worldwide on 21 October 2026 with progress shared with PC.

Broken Ranks is the Polish studio Whitemoon Games’ successor to The Pride of Taern: an isometric, low-fantasy MMORPG that looks like Baldur’s Gate while you explore and turns into Heroes of Might & Magic–style rounds the moment a fight starts. It has been on PC since 2022, and a lot of the beginner advice online is now out of date – resting is gone, the Party Finder is being rebuilt, and a mobile version is about to bring in a wave of new players.

This Broken Ranks gameplay guide explains the combat maths in plain numbers, helps you pick a class, gives you 20 tips that still apply in October 2026, and points out the things other guides get wrong. For more game guides, browse our Game section.

What changed in Broken Ranks in 2026

If you are reading an older guide, check it against this list first. Several of these changes alter how you should play from day one.

How Broken Ranks combat actually works

Exploration is real-time, but combat is fought in rounds. Everyone plans at the same time, and when the 10-second bar runs out (or you click it early) the actions resolve. These are the rules from Whitemoon’s own combat explainer:

RuleNumberWhy it matters
Action points per round12Shared between every attack and every defense
Planning time10 secondsEnemies don’t wait – use saved strategies
Defense zones3 (melee, ranged, mental), max 5 AP each0 points in a zone = every attack of that type hits you
Attack slotsUp to 5, 1–5 AP eachAn attack with 0 AP is not performed at all
What extra AP buysAccuracy / dodge chanceMore AP never adds damage
Critical hitsSingle-target damage onlyArea attacks can never crit
Saved strategies2 presets normallyOne click loads a full attack/defense plan
FleeingEvery classCombat ends when one side is dead or has fled

The order attacks resolve in (PvE)

Speed matters because a mob that dies before its turn can’t hit you. In PvE the game resolves attack types in a fixed order, and players beat monsters inside the same type:

1. Mental
area, then single-target (buffs, debuffs, mind damage)
2. Ranged
area, then single-target
3. Melee
last – but yours before the boss’s

In PvP the type order is similar, but inside a type the player who clicked the time bar first goes first. That is a real reason to lock in quickly once you are sure.

Action-point splits that work

These are our starting templates, not official numbers – adjust after a few rounds once you see what the enemy actually throws. The idea is simple: cover the zone you are being hit in, leave a token point in a zone the enemy might use, and spend the rest on one or two well-funded attacks.

EnemyMelee defRanged defMental defAttacks
Plain melee mob (dogs, boars, bandits)5007 (e.g. 4 + 3)
Archer-type mob1506
Caster / debuffer1056
Unknown / mixed group3225
Low HP, enemy nearly deadmax where hit––1 strong attack, or flee

Rule of thumb: two attacks at 3–4 AP usually beat four attacks at 1–2 AP, because each point raises the chance to land and none of them raise damage.

Which class to pick

There are seven classes. Each has 8 basic abilities shared with everyone (including melee, ranged and mental options) plus 9 of its own. Roles below come from Whitemoon’s class descriptions; the “first character” column is our view.

ClassMain styleOfficial roleAs a first character
KnightMeleeLeads, buffs allies, takes damage for themForgiving; shines most in parties
BarbarianMelee, two-handedHeavy hits, spins through groupsEasy to understand, strong solo
SheedMelee, fist weaponsWeakens foes by hitting vulnerable spotsRewarding once you read debuffs
ArcherRangedPrecise shots that weaken targetsGood solo; acts before melee mobs
Fire MageMagic damageBig, wide fire damageFragile; needs mana and defense discipline
Voodoo (Shaman)MentalFast mental attacks that drain and weakenMental goes first – great control, more to learn
DruidHybrid / healerExcellent healer with dangerous strikesSelf-sufficient, always wanted in groups

Can’t decide? Barbarian or Archer if you mostly want to play alone at first, Druid or Knight if you plan to group early, Voodoo if you enjoy outsmarting the turn order.

20 Broken Ranks tips and tricks

First hour

1. Do the tutorial properly. It teaches the action-point screen better than any article, and everything else builds on it.

2. Read quest dialogue. The story is non-linear and some outcomes change based on your choices. Skipping text is how people miss quest items and walk in circles.

3. Follow the main story to about level 10. Quests give the best early experience and gear, so don’t buy expensive vendor items yet.

4. Set up both strategy presets early. Make one for melee enemies and one for ranged or mental ones. Under a 10-second timer, one click beats dragging twelve points around.

5. Never let the timer hit zero with nothing set. A simple, imperfect plan is far better than an empty round where you defend nothing.

Combat

6. Look at the enemy before you assign points. Its type tells you which zone to defend. A zone left at 0 means every attack in it lands.

7. Fund fewer attacks. Extra AP buy accuracy, not damage, so spread-thin attacks miss a lot.

8. Use single-target attacks when you want crits. Area attacks can’t crit; save them for packs.

9. Exploit the turn order. Mental resolves before ranged, and ranged before melee. A debuff or a ranged finisher can land before a melee mob ever swings.

10. Pick your target on purpose. The topmost enemy is targeted by default. Click the one you want dead first (red circle), and the ally you want to buff (green circle).

11. Flee before you die, not after. Every class can run. If two rounds go badly against a pack, leave and come back healed.

Resources, gear and gold

12. Let regeneration work for you. Since the 8 July 2026 update there is no rest button: your health, mana and stamina refill automatically in areas marked for regeneration, a little slower while moving. Walk to your next fight instead of standing still.

13. Still carry flasks. Regeneration is out of combat only. Keep life, mana and stamina flasks for long fights and boss attempts.

14. Know your attributes. Broken Ranks uses Strength, Dexterity, Power, Knowledge, HP, Mana and Stamina. Read each tooltip for your class before spending points – physical classes lean on Strength and Dexterity, casters on Power and Knowledge.

15. Make gold with flasks. Crafting common life, mana and stamina flasks from gathered herbs and mob drops is a steady early earner; check marketplace prices before you craft.

16. Always use an inhibitor when shattering or melting. It raises the shards or essence you get back, and the gear-section table below explains why that matters.

Leveling and groups

17. Chain repeatable tasks with farming. Most early leveling is a task NPC plus the mobs nearby while the task is on cooldown. The route below shows the usual stops.

18. Use easier instance difficulties. Several bosses have difficulty settings, so a solo or duo player can learn a fight on easy before the group version.

19. Use the Party Finder and join a guild. Many of the best experience and loot spots are group content. The Party Finder is being reworked with pre-meeting chat and condition checks to make this easier.

20. Stay out of PvP areas until you are ready. PvP is optional and tied to marked zones. Some profitable gathering spots sit inside them, so other players can kill you and take what you farmed.

Early leveling route (levels 1–30)

This is the route experienced players commonly recommend and it appears in community guides from 2023–2024. Spot names are stable, but level ranges may feel different after later balance and gear-rank changes, so treat them as a guide, not a rule.

LevelWhereWhat to do
1–5TrentisStory quests; fill gaps on bandits and dogs near town
5–10Trentis centreZed task (NPC by the first pet vendor) + farming during cooldown
10–18Lumberjack ForestLumberjack task; wild boars, then small groups of rascals around 14–15
18–22SwampOgre task; avoid ogre packs of three when solo
22–30Shore by the shipwreckMandus task combined with Ichtion runs for drops
28+Ruins Tower areaBandit task (needs a party of two to start)

Around level 29 the Puppet Master instance opens up and is widely regarded as one of the best group spots for experience and pet upgrades. Beyond 30, community advice points to Kolden Forest orcs and grizzlies, nearby events, and then group instances.

Gear basics: upgrade, merge, shatter, melt

Any blacksmith (Voberg in Trentis is the first you’ll meet) handles four gear actions. Knowing them early stops you from selling items that are worth more destroyed.

ActionYou needResult / risk
UpgradeItem, inhibitor of the right rank, a stat flask, a manamer; optional essence (+10% chance)Adds stats. On a fail, your chance to keep the upgrade level equals the item’s durability %
Merge (Fusion)Two identical synergetic items, same slot and levelStronger item. The bottom item merges into the top one, so put the keeper on top
ShatterTaralax’s Hammer, essences, inhibitorTurns red, blue or green items into shards for improving blues
MeltMelting item, inhibitorTurns blues, greens or drifs into essence (charging, upgrade bonus)

A 2024 community guide puts the merge success rate at about 80%, with only the lower item lost on a fail. Merge and upgrade costs and rates can change in patches; check the blacksmith window before you commit an expensive item.

PC vs Android: where to play

PC clientAndroid
AvailabilitySince 2022, freeWorldwide from 21 Oct 2026 (pre-register on Google Play); earlier in select countries
ProgressSame account, characters and items on both; cross-play on shared servers
AdsNoneNone, per the official FAQ
FeaturesEverythingA few minor features missing at launch; tablets may show UI issues

Our suggestion: learn combat on PC if you can, where dragging points with a mouse is quickest, and use the phone for tasks and daily challenges. Because progress is shared, you don’t have to choose.

Mistakes and myths

Mistake or mythReality
“More AP on an attack = more damage”AP only raise the chance to hit. Damage comes from stats, gear and skills.
Putting all 12 points into attacksA zone at 0 is hit by every attack of that type. Always cover the zone you face.
“Press R to rest after every fight”Outdated. Resting was replaced by passive regeneration on 8 July 2026.
“Broken Ranks mobile is already out everywhere”Until 21 Oct 2026 Android was limited to select countries; the global release is that date.
Selling every blue drop to vendorsBlues and drifs are often worth more shattered or melted, or sold to players.
Fighting to the deathEvery class can flee. Losing a fight costs more time than leaving it.
Using area attacks on a single bossArea attacks can’t crit; single-target attacks are usually better on one target.

FAQ

Is Broken Ranks free to play?

Yes. Broken Ranks is free-to-play on PC, and the Android version is free with no ads.

How does combat work in Broken Ranks?

Each round you have 10 seconds to split 12 action points between up to five attacks and three defense zones (melee, ranged and mental), with a maximum of 5 points per attack or zone. More points raise the chance to hit or dodge, not the damage.

What is the best class for beginners?

Barbarian and Archer are the easiest to play alone. Druid is the most self-sufficient thanks to healing, and Knight is very forgiving in a party.

Can you still rest in Broken Ranks?

No. The 8 July 2026 update removed resting and added passive regeneration outside combat, which works automatically in marked areas and slowly even while you move.

When does Broken Ranks come out on Android?

The global Android launch is 21 October 2026. Pre-registration is open on Google Play, and some countries already had access.

Does Broken Ranks progress carry over between PC and mobile?

Yes. PC and Android share accounts, characters and items, and players on both platforms play together.

How do I level up fast in Broken Ranks?

Follow the story to about level 10, then chain repeatable tasks (Zed, Lumberjack, Ogre, Mandus) with farming during their cooldowns, and join groups for instances such as Puppet Master from around level 29.
