Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD Guide: 20 Tips and Tricks for Beginners
Updated 13 October 2026 · Steam, iOS and Android · Numbers checked against the in-game data after launch

Quick answer
Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD gives you 5 towers, 2 heroes and 3 spells per stage. Bring one tower of each type (marksman, barrack, artillery, mage) plus one flex pick, block enemies with barracks where your damage overlaps, answer armor with mage, explosive or true damage, and call waves early for bonus gold. Finish a stage with 18 or more lives for 3 stars, spend your upgrade points on one full path per tower tree, and remember there are no official cheat codes in the game.
Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD is Ironhide’s prequel to the whole series. You travel back to the early days of Linirea to stop a young Vez’nan, and the battles look familiar until you open the loadout screen. You can no longer build every tower on every map. You pick five before the fight starts, and that one change decides most wins and losses.
This guide is for players who have just started, or who keep getting stuck around stages 8 to 13. It explains the rules the game does not spell out clearly (damage types, how stars are counted, what calling a wave early actually gives you), then turns them into practical tips, starter loadouts and a star unlock roadmap. The four tower types (and which of the 15 towers belong to each)
Every tower belongs to one of four families. This matters twice: once for damage type, and again in the Upgrades room, where each family shares one upgrade tree. A point spent on the Mage tree helps all four mage towers you will ever bring.
| Type | Towers | Damage | Job in your five |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marksman | Archer Garrison, Elven Elite Ranger, Cursed Crossbows, Sentry Watchtower | Physical | Steady single-target damage, hits flyers, long reach |
| Barrack | Knights Order, Wildcat Huntresses, Gold Prospectors | Physical | Blocks the road so everything else can shoot |
| Artillery | Royal Catapult, Dwarven Culverin, Ironbark Treant, Alchemist Shack | Explosive (Alchemist Shack: true) | Area damage on groups held by barracks; beats armor better than arrows |
| Mage | Scholar Mage, Sunray Master, Light Priestess, Arcane Forger | Magic | Melts high-armor enemies; Scholar Mage also buffs nearby towers |
You start with Archer Garrison, Knights Order and Royal Catapult. Scholar Mage opens at 3 stars, so your first full four-type lineup arrives within the first couple of stages.
Damage and armor: the rule most guides get wrong
A lot of beginner advice says physical damage “bounces off” armored enemies and that mages are the only answer. That is only half true. The game uses four damage types, and explosive damage is the hidden middle ground:
| Damage type | Reduced by | Who deals it |
|---|---|---|
| Physical | Full armor | Marksman and barrack towers |
| Magic | Magic resistance (armor does nothing) | Mage towers |
| Explosive | Only half of armor (a quarter with the Shrapnel upgrade) | Royal Catapult, Dwarven Culverin, Ironbark Treant |
| True | Nothing | Alchemist Shack, Fat Boy item |
Two worked examples make this clear. A Dark Knight with 80% armor takes only 20% of an arrow’s damage, but a Royal Catapult shell meets half that armor (40%), so the shell keeps 60% of its damage. The Dark Slayer has 100% armor: arrows deal zero, while explosive damage still lands at 50%. On the other side, a Necromancer with 60% magic resistance shrugs off a good chunk of mage damage but has no defence against physical hits.
Rule of thumb: tap an enemy (or press R on PC) to read its armor and magic resistance. High armor → mage, artillery or Alchemist Shack. High magic resistance → arrows and barracks. Both high → true damage or explosive.
20 Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis tips and tricks
Battle tips
1. Know the 3-star rule before you start. A Campaign win gives 3 stars with 18 or more lives left, 2 stars with 6 to 17, and 1 star with 5 or fewer. You start with 20 lives, so you can afford to leak only two small enemies for a 3-star clear. If an early wave is already leaking, restart instead of finishing on 2 stars and replaying later.
2. Call waves early for free gold and faster spells. Sending the next wave before its timer runs out gives 1 gold for every second left on the timer, and it also moves all your spell cooldowns forward by the same number of seconds. On easy early waves this is the cheapest gold in the game. Stop doing it the moment your defence starts to strain.
3. Build one tower of each type, then pick a flex fifth. A marksman, a barrack, an artillery and a mage cover physical, magic, explosive damage and blocking. Your fifth slot answers the stage: a second marksman for flyers, a second mage for armored waves, or a support tower.
4. Do not drop the Archer Garrison too early. It is cheap, fast and hits flyers. Pocket Gamer’s beginner guide describes going back to the basic archer on Path of Peril, because its volume of fire handles regenerating trolls better than slow heavy hitters. Fast, cheap fire is often worth more than one big shot.
5. Speed beats burst against fast and regenerating enemies. Slow towers like the Dwarven Culverin hit hard, but fast enemies run past between shots and trolls heal the damage back. Pair every slow, heavy tower with something that fires often.
6. Block first, then splash. Put a barrack’s rally point (press T on PC, or tap the flag icon) where your artillery and mage ranges overlap. Enemies that stop in a cluster are exactly what area damage wants.
7. Read the stage before you build. Many stages change mid-fight: new lanes open, enemies take shortcuts, or a stage weapon (a crane, a cavalry charge, a catapult) becomes available. If a stage feels oddly easy or impossibly hard, look for the map mechanic you have not used yet.
8. Use the encyclopedia. Every enemy’s armor, magic resistance, speed and special trick is listed in the in-game encyclopedia. Thirty seconds there saves three failed attempts.
Hero tips
9. Give your two heroes different jobs. One hero holds the most dangerous lane next to a barrack; the other roams, covers a second lane or picks off flyers. Two heroes doing the same job leaves a lane empty.
10. Heroes support, they do not solo. Heroes are strongest inside your defence, where towers and soldiers back them up. Their real advantage is that they can move anywhere, so treat them as your emergency plug when something slips past.
11. Stick with a pair while it works. Each hero has its own level (up to 10) and skill tree. Swapping every time a new hero unlocks leaves you with several half-levelled heroes. Change the pair when a stage asks for something they cannot do.
Spell tips
12. Spam Reinforcements. It has only a 15-second cooldown, the shortest of all nine spells. Drop the soldiers in front of anything you need to slow down, especially a boss or an elite about to break through.
13. Spells level up by being cast, even when you lose. Spell XP is saved after a win, a loss, or when you restart. If a spell is two or more levels behind where the game expects it to be for your campaign progress, each cast gives double XP. Casting freely in a stage you are about to restart is not wasted.
14. Give each of your three spells a different job. One damage spell (Rain of Fire), one stall (Reinforcements), and one flexible slot for slows, tower buffs or relocation. Change the third slot more often than your towers.
15. Spell upgrade choices can be swapped for free. In the Spells room, the paired upgrades at levels 2 and 4 can be switched at no cost. Try both branches.
Progression tips
16. Keep moving forward before chasing every star. New stages give more upgrade points and unlock better tools. A stubborn 2-star stage is easier to 3-star later with a bigger roster.
17. Collect gems on every attempt. Gems drop from one enemy per wave and you keep them even after a loss. Later stages pay far more (Vez’nan’s Tower gives 180 to 285 per Campaign play, the first stage only 30 to 45), so do not farm early stages for gems.
18. Spend gems on levels you would otherwise grind. Gems buy hero and spell levels and the three items (Fat Boy, Gold Bag, Heartbox). Levelling a spell from 1 to 6 with gems costs 1,800, so put gems into the spell or hero you actually use most.
19. Save Iron Challenge for after a clean Campaign win. It unlocks per stage once you win the Campaign there, gives 1.5x spell XP, and restricts you to two specific towers. Knowing the map first makes it far easier.
20. Pick up the small interactive objects. Many of the 53 achievements come from clicking scenery or triggering stage events. They cost nothing on a stable run and achievements also pay out gems.
Starter loadouts that work
These are our suggested lineups built from the tower roles and unlock order above, not official recommendations. Swap the flex slot to suit each stage.
Stages 1–7: Balanced start
Towers: Archer Garrison, Knights Order, Royal Catapult, Scholar Mage, Dwarven Culverin
Heroes: Gerald + Zefira
Spells: Reinforcements, Rain of Fire, Royal Edict
Armored waves
Towers: Scholar Mage, Sunray Master, Royal Catapult, Knights Order, Archer Garrison
Why: two magic towers plus explosive damage, with a blocker to hold armored units in the splash
Upgrade: Shrapnel in the Artillery tree
Flyers and split lanes
Towers: Archer Garrison, Elven Elite Ranger, Scholar Mage, Knights Order, Royal Catapult
Why: two marksman towers for air targets; the long-range catapult covers a second road
Upgrade: Hawk Eye (+10% marksman range) first
The Upgrades room: where your points come from
The Upgrades room has one tree for each tower type. Points come only from campaign progress, not from stars or gems, and you get 56 points once all 18 stages are done. One full path through a tree (both opening upgrades, one branch and the Ultimate) costs 14 points, so by the end you can max one path in all four trees.

What to buy first: the cheap 1-point and 2-point upgrades at the root of each tree give the most value per point. Hawk Eye (+10% marksman range), Thick Skin (+10% soldier health), Heavy Load (+10% artillery area) and Controlled Chaos (+15% mage minimum damage) cost 1 point each. After that, push the tree of the tower family you bring most.
Branches can be swapped: after the first two upgrades each tree splits into branch A and B. Buying the other branch’s level III upgrade swaps it in, and a level IV upgrade you already bought moves across with it. A useful example: in the Artillery tree, Shrapnel (branch B) makes catapult, culverin and treant basic attacks ignore 75% of armor, which is ideal against armored stages, while branch A adds a short stun.
Star unlock roadmap (Steam)
Stars open new heroes, towers, spells and the challenge modes. There are 144 stars in total: up to 3 per stage in Campaign (54) plus 1 for each challenge mode won on each stage (90). On Steam, the last unlock needs only 64.
| Stars | Unlock | Stars | Unlock |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Zefira (hero) | 38 | Ignus (hero) |
| 3 | Scholar Mage | 40 | Alchemist Shack |

| 16 | Wildcat Huntresses | 50 | Ironbark Treant |
| 18 | Teleportation Sigil (spell) | 52 | Light Priestess |

Playing on iOS or Android? 18 of these rewards are in-app purchases on mobile instead of star unlocks: the heroes Malik, Rhodes, Ignus, Illiana, Gemina, Drakkan, Oni and Ashbite, the towers Wildcat Huntresses, Alchemist Shack, Ironbark Treant, Arcane Forger and Sentry Watchtower, and five spells. The mobile star track ends at 52 stars (Light Priestess). Everything else unlocks with the same stars as on Steam.
Tip: the jump to 24 stars is the most important target early on. Eight 3-star stages gets you there and opens four challenge modes on every stage you have cleared, and each challenge win is another star.
Challenge modes explained
Every stage has five challenges on top of the Campaign. Iron Challenge opens on a stage as soon as you win it in Campaign; the other four also need 24 stars. Each challenge win is worth 1 star.
| Mode | Lives | Waves | Rule | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign | 20 | 5–15 | Normal loadout | Up to 3 stars by lives left |
| Iron Challenge | 1 | 1 | Only two set towers per stage | One huge wave: build everything before it lands |
| Blitz Challenge | 3 | 3 | Spell cooldowns halved | Lean on spells; cast on cooldown |
| Spell Rush | 3 | 6 | No heroes, faster spells | Pick short-cooldown spells and an extra blocker |
| Hero Party | 3 | 6 | 4 heroes, no spells | Spread heroes across lanes; bring tanky ones |
| Classic Rush | 3 | 5–15 | One hero, 2011 tower families, Rain of Fire and Reinforcements only | Classic upgrades arrive stage by stage; plan for later stages to feel different |
The level-select screen rates each stage’s challenges: Hard on stages 1–7, Brutal on 8–13 and Extreme on 14–18. Start your challenge runs on the early stages while your roster is still growing.
Impossible difficulty opens once you beat stage 18 (Vez’nan’s Tower) in Campaign on any save slot.

Are there Kingdom Rush 6: Genesis TD cheats or console commands?
No. The game has no built-in cheat codes and no developer console. Pages promising “console commands” for unlimited gold or max stars are pointing you to third-party trainers or memory-editing tables.
We do not recommend them. Unofficial trainers are separate programs you download and run alongside the game, which carries the usual malware risk, and memory edits can break after each patch (Ironhide released Patch 1 on 6 October 2026) or corrupt a save. On mobile, modded APKs are a bigger risk still.
The legitimate “cheats” are the systems already in the game:
- More gold: call waves early, and use the Gold Prospectors tower or the Gold Bag item.
- More power: replay later stages for gems and buy hero or spell levels; finish the campaign for all 56 upgrade points.
- An emergency button: the Fat Boy item deals 2,000 true damage and kills outright any enemy below that health.
- Easier stars: drop to Casual difficulty for a stage that is blocking you, then come back later.
Common beginner mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Bringing three towers of the same type | Cover all four damage roles first; duplicate only for a specific threat |
| Upgrading one tower to max while another lane is empty | Spread early gold, then deepen the towers that do the most work |
| Saving Reinforcements “for later” | It recharges in 15 seconds; use it every time a lane wobbles |
| Arrows into heavily armored enemies | Switch to mage, artillery or Alchemist Shack |
| Forgetting the Upgrades room | Spend points after every new stage; they come from campaign progress |
| Farming stage 1 for gems | Later stages give several times more gems per play |
| Starting challenges on stages 14–18 | Begin with the “Hard” stages 1–7 to reach 24 stars faster |
